New Zealand's Enchanted DINOSAUR Forest 🇳🇿 Whirinaki Te Pua A Tane Conservation Park

  • New Zealand's Whirinaki Forest is a step back into dinosaur forest with primordial rainforest, huge 1000 year old trees and rare species. It also features the stunning Te Whaiti-Nui-a-Toi Canyon and several waterfalls including Whirinaki Falls and Waiatiu Falls. What makes the Whirinaki Forest unique is the density of its lowland podocarp forests, a species that emerged in the Jurassic Era, 200 million years ago.

    It is a beautiful place. I assume you saw the log, out the front of the DOC office in Murupara, that shows the size of trees they pulled out of there. Btw, a slight correction, not all cone-bearing trees are Podocarps. I think you might have meant gymnosperm? But hey, I'm a plant nerd 😉

    • @JesseStLouis
      @JesseStLouis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I appreciate the correction. Always good to learn new things. Not all cone bearing trees are podocarps but are all podocarps cone bearing ?? Maybe that's what I meant.

    • @johnhenry4389
      @johnhenry4389 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JesseStLouis , you got that right. Even what I wrote earlier isn't quite correct as not all gymnosperms are cone-bearing but the species that have cones are generally the obvious examples. None of them have flowers, and that's what's important!

  • @spunkythedingo9859
    @spunkythedingo9859 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sorry, anything that bears a cone is a conifer, a podocarp is a kind of conifer; there are less than 200 species; all appearing in the Southern Hemisphere, a relic of ancient Gondwana.
