The Wizard of Oz, Victor Fleming (USA, 1939)
Who could forget the magical moment when Dorothy opens the door from her drab, sepia-toned house to a vibrant Technicolor landscape?
FUN FACT! That shot was filmed entirely in color using a special sepia-toned set and wardrobe for the interior. This allows the transition from “black and white” to color in the same shot without using complicated special effects.
Technicolor was the first three-color film system, which enabled it to capture the full spectrum of color. (There were earlier systems that used only two colors.) It was a complicated process which required filming with a special camera to record three filmstrips simultaneously for red, green, and blue. The three colors were then combined onto one film strip, resulting in the full color that we see on screen.
Contrary to popular belief, The Wizard of Oz wasn’t the first Technicolor film, but it really exploited its strengths - creating a whole fantastical, colorful world in stark contrast to the dull sepia tones of Kansas.
