Respect for this one Fred!! Most people don't even make eye contact with strangers on the subway. Here you are making a whole video hahaha. That takes courage, and the photos were well worth it!
The quality of this video is so high! I love the voice-over, the story telling, the photos and the connection with your subjects. I follow many photographers in social media, but you're definitely the most inspiring one! Keep up the great work :)
Watch next episode of this series th-cam.com/play/PLQAJ8pSCXDc6eeFnrjnBnvXyPYNNUQzph.html. Also a big THANK YOU to everyone who has become a member of my channel: geni.us/trovatten. We might only be 5 members now, but it helps me create videos like this :)!
Dude seriously, come to India! It's thrilling, exhilarating, alive and full of missed shots 😂. You'll have the time of your life! I'm not kidding! I am from India and it's all that for me, despite being a native! Please, please come here. There are TONS of great street photographers here who would LOVE to meet you
Excellent video, I'm a Mexico City citizen, and let me tell you something, it's actually impressive how they let you take pictures inside the subway. Police guards from the subway here in Mexico City can be really aggressive if they see you holding a camera, or a camcorder. I remember this one time I was in the subway, I was testing a 50mm lens I had bought for my DSLR, I wasn't even taking pictures, I was just mounting the lens to my DSLR body, in a matter of seconds a police guard noticed me holding the camera, all of a sudden there were 2 of them, they told me that any kind of photography was forbidden inside the subway, and they asked me to delete every picture I had taken, I told them I wasn't taking pictures, my camera didn't even have an SD card inside. They let me go at the end, but it clearly seemed they were actually annoyed.
Im from Mexico, and I´m a photographer as well. Seeing this video made me so nostalgic for my city, I´m living abroad now, and getting to watch the look from people was so amazing, the emotion of every photo, made me cry. They are so beautiful.
Amazing photos. Some of their expressions convey a vast depth of emotion which, I in turn, read into and gain an understanding of their thoughts and, in some cases, their lives
This is wonderful Frederik. Forget about incorporating flash. Your video shows that the best 'equipment' for street photography is openness and empathy. I'm not sure how much they can be learnt but the take-away for me is to embrace the interactions rather than fearing them (easier said than done). You can't capture what you don't love!
I like how you described your preparation, your set-up, your gears... It gives us the idea how much you wanted this project and how you prepared for it.
Shit man... "Subway" is my fav series ever and I have that book on my shelf and I come back to it from time to time. Mad respect for following Bruce's work ethic, that's amazing what you did. Thank you for keeping up with the spirit
I had fallen out of love with photography for many different reasons. Then completely accidentally, I stumbled across a video of you being interviewed - not sure how, as I was looking at New Orleans Jazz music videos at the time - anyhow, there is something about your unassuming approach that had me hooked and this, only the second of your videos I have watched, has been equally rewarding. Thanks for renewing my interest, I might even get my cameras out again.
Well I am way late to this party as you did this video over 2 years ago but I love this and the connection you have with the people in the subway through the shots. I have always loved how people are sort of suspended and put on pause when they rush onto the train.... wait still and almost motionless and then burst into action again as the doors open and they race off. You seem to have captured them so well in that suspended moment. I do not know Bruce Davidson's work and will be investigating more. Thank you for doing this video and the others in the 'Take Photos Like' series. I am loving the inspiration I am getting from them.
Extraordinary mood, one can sense the feelings of the people...brave attempt to street photography. Yes, bruce back at his time, was way cool with subway photography.
I was looking for a video of people taking photos in the subway so that I had the courage to do so. When I saw your video taking pictures in some of the stations I pass by everyday to go to school I knew I could do it. Thx for inspiring
It is equal to the Chilean subway, same cars, same stations, same lighting (maybe a little better illuminated) But here in Chile they do not let you take photos in the subway, you have to do it in secret or escaping from the guards that many times, are more annoying than thieves. You raised the bar again, congratulations. :)
I've only just discovered your channel and oh my goodness am I enjoying it. Wonderful photography and brilliant insights. I am lucky to have so many of your videos to work through.
Wow - this was excellent. I love the way you narrated the story of Davidson in the background, whilst you showed us your work. I'm a bit of a Bruce Gilden and shove my camera into peoples' faces too - but man what you did here talk big balls. In the subway with everybody looking at you - excellent video!
You have a few Really Good Shots my friend. Your subjects have Great impression. I think Red Subway Train in Mexico really pops in color. Bruce Davidson and you are really inspired me to start doing this Subway project.
These photos are incredible! I am still finding my balance when it comes to taking photos of strangers, but whoa! These photos give me lots of inspiration towards my goal of street photography (doubt I'll ever be able to take photos of someone on a subway). And though I find your photos to be inspiring, your commentary throughout was upsetting and does raise a few questions.
Very interesting video, Frederick. I saw it in my subscriptions today, and didn't hesitate to watch it straight away. I need to learn to be able to approach people like you. can.
I was scared that I might have confused people with the narration of NYC subway with film of the Mexico City Subway - but I hope the majority watch the video to the end and don't think this is how I feel about the Mexico City Subway. Thanks for watching Ibarionex. Always a pleasure to see you in the comment section, really - I'm a huge fan of your podcast!
Brilliant concept for a video. Juxtaposing Davidson's writings about his project with your own photos was an inspired trope. Even better was that you came up with some excellent photos in your own right. I hope you develop other ideas for videos based on classic photography books. I don't believe anyone else is doing this.
Very nice video, many thanks ! I just tried the same exercice during the last couple days in Paris ! Same set up (XT3 + 35 1.4) but I was going for candid shots only ! I felt the same fear about thief and people reactions. But it went well, only one lady asked me to delete the picture I took. I can't wait to see the result
second video that i watch for you, and I am amazed! your approach and quick friendliness are so beautifully displayed for everyone to see and it is reflected in how your subjects smile when their photos are taken. m,such respect
Wow my congratulations for your work! This subway is my rute every day to my work and i enjoy watch all this pictures that you took.. Thanks for sharing.
This channel's vibe just makes you wanna continue watching, I've mentioned it before my friend and I think you have a great quality and it's the honesty and nice feeling you give your audience, as you mentioned at the beginning of the video, we just have to seat back, relax and get 'confi'. Congrats!
I am just speechless, so many good pictures...
Thank you so much Ondra!
The narration of the book while you were taking your photos is a great idea!
Respect for this one Fred!! Most people don't even make eye contact with strangers on the subway. Here you are making a whole video hahaha. That takes courage, and the photos were well worth it!
Thanks a lot Dan! I appreciate it :)! It was a fun video to make and what a place to take photos!
Maybe in other subways... in Mexico City's metro, people DO make eye contact (and sadly other types of contact as well).
The quality of this video is so high! I love the voice-over, the story telling, the photos and the connection with your subjects. I follow many photographers in social media, but you're definitely the most inspiring one! Keep up the great work :)
Thank you so much dude! So nice to hear! I’m on my way out to make another video now!
Frederik Trovatten u captured some amazing pics. Aperture, shutter priority or manual settings? And what r those settings and what lens?

Would love to take a trip to India some time! Anywhere I can get a culture shock, I'm up!

It's insane how Fred preped for this. Maybe this can be a preface for a photobook in the future Fred
Amazing photos. Some of their expressions convey a vast depth of emotion which, I in turn, read into and gain an understanding of their thoughts and, in some cases, their lives
So beautiful to capture people as they are in every day life. You did an amazing job.

Hey Gabriel! Yeah I'd imagine. It's actually the same here in Mexico City. It's not allowed to take pictures in the Subway. Buuut I found a way :)
