A great feature story on an amazing athlete! I remember when we took Marcus climbing for the first time at Mineral Wells State Park in Texas years ago. Congratulations Marcus on your many successes and thanks for Osprey for telling this amazingly inspirational story!
Jimmy was an incredible human being...man...and especially father. Prior to me moving my family to Durango (because Marcus inspired us to just do it) I sat with Jimmy in the hallway of an indoor storage unit in downtown Fort Worth. He was buying my portaledge and some other bigwall gear. We sat for hours just talking. He'd was recently dealing with a divorce and all he could talk about or worry about was his little girl. Months later we'd all sit in our living room. Marcus' family and mine shared a wall in a cabin on the Florida river north of Durango. It'd be the last time my family and I would see him. He was killed a short time later. If I could convey just one thing it's the pain and life altering emotions that overcame Marcus. NONE of our pain could even remotely compare to what Marcus endured. In the many years that have followed...none of us talked much about Jimmy. It was too hard to see the pain wash over Marcus at the mere mention of his name. Marcus endured so much more over the years with some other tragedies and seeing this man emerge from the pain a better man...incredible father...and timeless friend has been one of the greatest things I've witnessed in life. Losing Jimmy abso-f'n-lutely wrecked Marcus but inch by inch...climb by climb..he poured his heart into his kids...his climbing team and those HE unwittingly mentored (myself included)....and to see who he has become today is nothing short of miraculous. He's a solid human and one of the most reliable friends I've ever had. I'm honored and humbled that Osprey would shine a light on the pain one endures when losing such a light in their life. Marcus...you're an incredible human being...keep that shit up. Jimmy is just as proud as the rest of us. He's out there...with us on every ascent. Climb on Marcus!!!!
The right name 5:49 min is "Potrero Chico" located in Hidalgo County in the State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The meaning of "Potrero" could be like a "baby horse" .
Potrero actually means corral or paddock in English. The Potrero Chico range forms a ring with only one entrance. Legend has it, Pancho Villa hid out in the Potrero because of its unique geography.
We love you, Marcus! Thanks for all you do for the Durango and climbing communities.
