Film vs Digital for Landscape Photography

Join me as I scan and post-process an image shot on slide film (Fuji Velvia 50) on an Epson V800 flatbed scanner and compare it to the same photo taken on a digital SLR. I'll discuss some of the unique characteristics of each and walk you through my slide film and digital workflow from start to finish. I use SilverFast SE for scanning and Photoshop CC and Lightroom Classic for post-processing.

Very useful and interesting the techniques you use in scanning and postprocessing slides and also how you edit digital files. I have a suspicion that the old pre-2007 (before picture controls) nikons using color mode III, or IIIa look pretty similar to velvia (but with more dynamic range). To get that you need to use nikon software or shoot jpg.

Nice Video Matt, and congratulations. I followed you on IG as well. I like that you made the digital to film comparison using slide film. It is my understanding that digital was designed around the slide.

Thanks, Ralph! I’m glad the comparison was helpful to you. Yes, digital (especially in the early days) is very similar to slide film in terms of dynamic range (exposing for the highlights so as not to blow them out beyond repair). Thanks so much for the like and follow!
