Chapter 1: Dining Room Layout | Table Shape and Size Guidance
Welcome to Ark Interiors Vancouver Showroom! In this episode, we are talking about Dining Room Space Planning. The initial segment focuses on how to choose the appropriate dining table in terms of occasion, size, and shape.
Key Steps: Measurement, Seat Capacity and Circulation, Table Shape and Size
In terms of the housing in Vancouver, dining room sizes commonly range as follows: The smaller size measures approximately 10' x 12', the medium size expands to about 12' x 15', and the larger size is around 15' x 18'.
It's important to leave enough space around the table for people to comfortably move around. A general rule of thumb is to leave at least 36 inches of clearance between the table and the wall.
42” - 48” would be ideal if you have the space. You will want to have 48” clearance between the table and any doorways. You’ll need at least 18 - 24 inches clearance just to pull chairs out. You also want to leave adequate space for opening the sideboard behind.
To begin to decide the appropriate size and shape of the dining table such as a round or rectangular one, you can determine the type of dining occasions whether the table will be primarily used for formal or casual gatherings, everyday family meals, or for hosting parties or buffet-style events.
A common size for rectangular tables for accommodating 4 - 6 people, typically starting at dimensions of 2'-6" x 5'. If you need a dining table that can serve 10 -12 people, the size can extend to around 4'-6" x 10'.
It is recommended to provide each individual seated at the table with a minimum of 24 inches of horizontal dining space. Ideally, allowing for 30 inches of space per person would provide even more comfort.
The standard height for a dining table is typically 30 inches, while the seat height is around 18 inches, leaving approximately 12 inches of leg space.
To determine the appropriate size of a round dining table based on seat capacity, you can use the following formula:
The small round table for 2 people starts at a diameter of 2'-6".
The common table size for 4 to 6 people can be at 3' - 4'-6" diameter
A large circular table for accommodating 10 -12 seats is a diameter of approximately 84” inches.
Common sizes:
4 seats: A diameter of approximately 36” inches (91-122 cm)
6 seats: A diameter of approximately 54” inches (122-152 cm)
8 seats: A diameter of approximately 60 inches (152-183 cm)
10 seats: A diameter of approximately 84” inches (183-213 cm)
In recent years, the oval table has gained favor among both creative professionals and homeowners alike. It offers a unique and stylish alternative to traditional rectangular or round tables, adding visual interest to a space, and fostering a casual vibe. The elongated shape provides versatility in seating arrangements, and offers the same size of surface as a rectangular table.
Ultimately, the choice of a dining table shape and size comes down to factors such as your dining area, seating capacity, and intended use. In the upcoming chapter, we will showcase creative table types for various occasions and discuss furniture and lighting arrangement strategies within the dining area.
