      Very nice of you to say and thank you Stephanie, but I forgot to chop off the piece in the beginning where he is sitting still, so it appears the engines never "throttled up" top get the train moving. Lesson learned butI'm very happy you like what I'm doing...Ken...

      @@misterk58 Ken like many I started more than 40 years ago and things just delayed the journey. First layout was purchased for eminent domain Aka walk in closet. I quickly realized that what I liked about the D&H took place over a long time. So I choose to be on the fence 1974ish and few years either way. This way I could have all my favorite engines. I quickly found out that rivet counting wasn't for me. I have both versions of 2312/1776 on the track at the same time...I ended up with two great U33's in solid blue so I have two different numbers, oops! I live in NJ so CNJ is present and Reading colors just pop for me, so add them in too. Region I just say North East.

    The only thing missing is ALCO smoke!
    It was great to see 2 old friends C424M 452. And former Reading GP39-2 7418! My friend and I saw 7418 pinch hitting on the Susquehanna railroad for there GP18s 1802.

    Ken... your modeling skills are most impressive, but your weathering of engines and rolling stock is superb. So many modelers overdo weathering to the point of giving their layouts an unrealistically dark look, but you've managed to get things just right. I'd be interested in knowing what you're using most often to get the effects you achieve. Looking forward to seeing more of your wonderful videos being that my layout (only 1/4 finished thus far) includes the D&H and Conrail during the fall of 1976. Keep up the excellent work!

    • @misterk58
      @misterk58 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark and thank for the very kind words about my layout.
      The lead two units in the video, I did using oils, oil washes and a bit of Pan Pastel. I learned quite a bit about weathering from my friend Mike Confalone who's weathering videos can be found on Model Railroad Hobbyist and also from friend John Bezuyan ( the artist formerly known as Southern Tier Modelworks), who did many of the units in my diesel fleet.
      The Ex Reading unit and the 5009 ( Idling in the yard ) were both done by John.
      I find personally that oils are great, because you have a great deal of control in how much goes onto the model.
      I normally start w a small amount on a small ANGLED brush, then wipe most of it off ON THE BACK of a paper plate until you basically have something of a "whisper of color" appearing with each pass of the brush.
      Then you go slowly, watching the color intensity increase.
      An oil wash can be used to add grime, soot and spillage into crevices on the long hoods of your locos.
      ** I highly recommend that you check out Mike Confalone's videos as he is really a Master in this area and takes you step by step through the process.
      You will be sure to kick out some sweet looking locos in no time at all.
      Thanks again Mark for your positive feedback and be sure to Check Out the 2019 issue of MODEL RAILROAD PLANNING, which will feature my layout as the cover story. Another video is right around the corner for sure!
      Ken...

      Now I know why your layout and weathering look so good. Mike's railroad modeling skills have amazed me ever since I found some of his videos on TH-cam. You're obviously in good company when it comes to the train-loving buddies you have! Thanks a lot for your prompt and detailed reply. I'll have to search for Mike's videos on weathering and hope I can find the nerve to apply oil paints to my engines. It takes guts to make that first swipe of the brush on a locomotive, but if my results are half as good as yours, I'd be very happy!

    Coming across this video now..where did you get the backdrop for the Mechanicville scene? Are they photos placed on boards or off the internet? Absolutely stunned by the detail, I am planning out to build my own D&H layout (1940s-1950s) centered around Oneonta with a run up to Mechanicville. I’ve started collecting D&H steam locos. Your series of videos have truly inspired me to take the time to plan out all the small details and do proper research before diving in.
    Best,
    Tom

      @kenkarlewicz9380  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom,
      So nice to hear that you enjoyed the videos and the "Mechanicville" backdrops were actually taken along I-88 and like most of the photo backdrops I shot for the layout are just random locations that I thought would work well for the "feel" I was going for. I"m not a prototype modeler so the scenes are not intended to be exact, but just to feel like D&H Country is all.
      I wish you much success with your new layout in closing will suggest that you consider making your backdrop photos in early morning or late afternoon avoiding the harsh shadows and flat light of mid-day sun.
      Thanks again Tom for the very kind words... Ken...

    • @misterk58
      @misterk58 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard,
      SOOO Sorry for missing the response to your wonderful comments.
      The photos I take myself across upstate NY in places that feel D&H to me and which I feel will fit the scene I am modeling.
      I also shoot in early morning or early evening, when the colors are warm and shadows soft.
      I then try to match my LED LIGHTING to blend with what is captured in the photos.
      Most of my loco fleet was painted, detailed and weathered by good friend John of Southern Tier Modelworks and Bob Harpe of Savannah GA.
      The layout and it's story will be featured in the 2019 issue of MRP due out in Jan of 2019.
      Thank you again for the kind words Richard and there should be a new video coming very soon...

      There are many companies that make commercial backdrop for those but I find that choosing special locations that fit the scenes I am creating usually work best at least for me being a photographer who is able to do my own .
      Most people do find that good photo backdrops can make a huge difference in the level of realism one can create a model railroad .
