  • Recently been doing a lot of work with docker containers for reproducibility and had the idea of starting an RStudio server on the cluster. The easiest way to do this is through Docker. The nice thing about Docker is that they are fairly portable and do not depend on the host operating system to build/use. Everyone that uses the same container, no matter the computer, will be able to do everything the same.
Here, I show how to use the Docker Desktop to pull a version of Rocker. Then I show how to configure the host link to the server as well as mounting a working directory on the host to the container.
..I know I said cluster a lot but I think that and remote servers where data lives are the best use-case for this. Then there is no need to download data and be bottlenecked by internet speed. As more remote work in data science is being done, this may be a easy and free way to stay efficient with analyses.
