    Well done! Perfect example of the value of just getting in there and learn by doing. All the work you've done on the boat taught you how to fix this right. Comparing the first and second jobs gives a perfect "before and after" picture of your abilities as a result of all the learning you accomplished while doing the other boat projects.

      Thanks so much! That’s the way I go about everything. Jump in the pool and swim! I really enjoy your videos as well!

    Good work! A thin piece of weather strip on top of the inside channel will stop the overflow. Adding the drain in a locker with a gas can in it was a great idea as it will drain any gas fumes in the locker also. Another trick I have learned is to paint the bottom of your gas can with truck bed liner, this will keep it from sliding around as much.

      All great ideas! Thanks! I also figured the drain was good incase of any leak or spill from the gas tank too.

    Well done for fixing it properly. Your boat looks great and that repair was not up to it. ;) Thanks for letting us follow your restoration along. Cheers

    Ryan! All I can say is...A much better job than last time!! Your foam creation was not one of your good-day-projects! But you did all right this time! You know your boat so I trust that the concern raised by Jan would be a rare situation. But as soon as she comes back from a lean she would drain anyway from the looks of it. Keep up the good work! Now get that cabin done this winter!!

      Thanks randy! While still not "pro" - it's definitely an improvement! Cabin projects sound like a good plan, this cold is brutal the last couple of days for us massholes!

    Awesome videos man! I just picked up a 1988 26D and I've also never sailed and have no idea what I'm doing. LOL. Your videos definitely gave me some confidence though! Unfortunately I didn't get my boat for free though...

    Nice job. Add some close cell foam weather strip to the underside of the hatch, outboard of the drain groove in the opening. It will reduce the quantity of water your drain groove has to deal with.

    As I was one of the youtube community who gave you a hard time on your first attempt, I have to give you credit for redoing the job. Much better. I'm still a bit nervous that water will come into the boat through the through hull when you are heeled over on the port side, but hopefully it won't. Guess we'll just have to stay tuned till next year to find out....:)

    Nice job! I have been watching your videos since you got the boat. (my first comment) I live in your state and am not too far from you. I would not call myself an expert sailor but I have raced and currently own a 28 ft. Pearson. You did a great job on the cockpit hatch drain. Next summer I recommend you put the boat in salt water. Much more fun to sail in the bay/ocean than lake/rivers. Better wind! I have learned no matter how long you have been sailing, there is always something else to learn. The boat will certainly provide you many opportunities for that learning experience. ;-) Good luck! and again, nice job!

    • @SailingFreeStyle
      @SailingFreeStyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Captain Bob! I would love to get the boat in salt water. Maaayyyyyyybe next year? Might want a full season on the lakes under my belt first before though, its pretty intimidating! I have Champlain and Candlewood on my list of lakes I want to do next year, at least they are a good size, the salty's bays would be a good next step after that I think? Thanks for watching this whole time and for commenting.

    Glad to see you got rid of that foam. It can actually absorb water , become saturated and end up weighing a ton! But not so sure about your red & white gas tank though!! :)

    What are you doing if your boat leans on the side while you are sailing and water comes in through this outlet ?

    • @SailingFreeStyle
      @SailingFreeStyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'll plug it while sailing, It would have to be a pretty serious heal to cause a problem though. I also made sure it was higher than the existing through hull for the other drain so the logic was if the existing through hull isn't causing a problem then neither should this one. The only thing I can think of to defeat that logic however was that the existing though hull goes to some plumbing that could actually fill when healed without me realizing it and then drain again once upright. I guess worst case scenario would be unplugged in a full lean over a long period of time without realizing water is coming in? But again, as soon as the boat rights itself once any water is noticed it will all drain right back out. (Again all worst case scenarios I really don't think its in a spot that would cause any issues)

  • @deeshipley6527
    @deeshipley6527 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You might try using a router to trim the edges of the drain tracks back far enough to get the tank out. Just a thought.

    • @SailingFreeStyle
      @SailingFreeStyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a bad idea, would just have to go back over them with some more resin after, its really not that much thats keeping in in there. we'll have to see if it becomes an issue, I'll most likely just be filling it with jerry cans anyway.

      +Alain Pascal Routhier yes I know about the long wait, it was just so hard to get anything done with the lack of “after work” daylight and poor damp rainy weather. Good news is I actually tackled 2 projects at once, working on the other when I couldn’t work on one, so I actually have all the footage ready to cut for the next one. So there won’t be much of a gap between.

    Do you know why the Hillbilly hatch was created by the prior owner?.

    • @SailingFreeStyle
      @SailingFreeStyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Uncle Bob he said to have a place to keep the gas tank (which is why I just went with his original thought, why not) at the end of the day I really wish he didn’t and made something in the lazaret like most other Mac 26 owners. It really would have saved a lot of head aches and amateurish (talking about myself!) repair work! Oh well, hard to complain about it with the price tag of free.

    • @unclebob6728
      @unclebob6728 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was fun watching you make the boat sailable and habitable.. My compliments! I thought the M26D had an aft locker for the gas tank next to the outboard.

    • @SailingFreeStyle
      @SailingFreeStyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a GIANT lazaret next to it that many people use to keep the gas tank, however without modding it the tank ends up super low and hard to reach, plus it should be vented etc. But it can be done. Thats the direction I WOULD have gone if it were me. Permanent under the motor well, vented, with a fill hose. Oh well this will work fine.

    You are going to need vents for the area where the gas tank is stored one in one out so fumes do not build up, very dangerous.

    • @SailingFreeStyle
      @SailingFreeStyle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theres 3 massive holes cut out of the lid, its plenty ventilated. Look at 2:51, you can see them pretty clearly. Not to mention the lid doesn't even make a seal.

    • @SailingFreeStyle

      +Tony Spijker thanks for watching and commenting! There are 2 kinds of people in this world. Those who care about how their gas tank looks and those that don’t. And at the end of the day, when all my news paper is covering up places that people CAN see, I am of the later. Just not that big of a deal to me. It’s like seeing a nickel on the ground and not caring enough to stop and pick it up.

    Ok I will not comment on the project, but you should have at least removed the gas tank before spray painting. But, the porn music overlay while inserting the fuel line was in my opinion, brilliant! On that little rod bit I give you a LOL and a thumbs up!
