Thank you Avery for your island strum tutorial. It has kept me on my toes. I will get it in the end.

One comment if I may: I found it confusing that you vocalised the "3" since that kind of prompted me to strum that silent down stroke. It came clear to me when I wrote it out as d-du-udu and said that to myself as 1(pause)2&(pause)&4&. As soon as I thought "3" for that second pause, my hand tended to hit the strings rather than just using that down as a silent strum to get to position for the next up. That said though, I'm so pleased to have bought myself a uke and I really do love your teaching style: so calm compared to some of the other more (shall we say) frantic.

can you talk about the subtle syncopation that can't be captured in western notation?

That was great. I’m just learning this strumming pattern only been playing Uke for about 8 months now. How long does it usually take for the strumming pattern to become natural to ones self ?

Calypso comes from Trinidad West Indies, not from the Caribbean "Trinidad only "

But since Trinidad is in the Caribbean, it's still correct to say that calypso is Caribbean. In a Venn diagram, all Trinidad is Caribbean, but not all Caribbean is Trinidad. In the same way, something can be said as being from the UK when it's English. Or as African when it's Nigerian.
