    I discovered this on my own using alternate tunings. My main tuning these days is DADDAD. I play mostly on one string. Two strings if I'm feeling jazzy. The other strings are there to provide a drone for a fuller sound. The style of music I play is a mix of bluesy roots and celtic folk with some Indian and Persian influences. Understanding interval patterns on a single string is the secret to unlocking every type of melody from around the world.

    • @hisdudeness09
      @hisdudeness09 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Another DADDAD player! Cheers. I also added some microtonal frets to my guitar to match my baglama. Gives some more sonic range on a linear scale as well.

    What is learning ? MEMORY function. What is practice - application and repetition of what is learned. Fingering is subjective. Memorization of the fingerboard and memorization of scales and phrases and chords is all we have. Practice is memorization. What a great video! I have "never" heard from anyone.. ever.. talk about the way that I have "always" played electric guitar! I usually stay on one string, and then, switch to another but mainly go up and down more than across. I have what they call great "relative pitch", and I play many instruments.. but the electric guitar for solo's or melody lines, always up and down one string. I write both music for retail sale and commercially licensed music under BMI, Inc as a composer. Thanks again for posting this video.

    In the past number of years, I've developed the single string approach into a whole method basically for learning the entire fingerboard by going through all major scales and their modes in all keys while also working on dexterity with basic finger patterns. It's time consuming and takes daily consistent practice to get through the whole shebang though. 1 scale a day on 1 string through 15 different scales over 6 strings. So that comes out to 90 days. But once you get to the 2nd string you start adding the next string to the previous string, slowly building up your 3nps scales. So ultimately, if you went through 1 scale a day without fail, you could get through the whole thing in 165 days. And you'll have a huge foundation not just with the intellectual knowledge of how the western notation system works and how the major scale and its modes work on guitar but you will have the sounds trained into your ear. It's heavy stuff. Very useful.

    • @deltadaz
      @deltadaz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats some great info there. What 15 scales would you be learning there, obviously Major and all its modes. Melodic and harmonic minor,

    • @spacevspitch4028
      @spacevspitch4028 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deltadaz I was actually referring to the 15 major scale spellings. Going in each direction around the circle of 5ths until you have all 7 flats and all 7 sharps.
      From there you can apply the same method to any scale really.
      I gotta make some videos going through it all.

    I actually think that linear practicing is the most natural thing to do when you pick up a guitar, and kids are often derailed from it right away. With linear practice and a metronome you're already training your rhythm, your coordination between both hands, your dexterity, your ear and memorizing the step sequence of a scale. Pebber also mentioned some good examples of solos with one string, Santana also has a few, but Prince used to do it a lot, specially the open string and hammer-on technique. I think it gives a more singing like sound to the solo, than going the box route.

    • @pebberbrown
      @pebberbrown  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Prince?

    • @pebberbrown
      @pebberbrown  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No no no no! Show me even ONE single solitary video where Prince solos on one string. Not happening. Prince is a PENTATONIC Position scale player. There is only ONE instance of less than one half a second of open string playing on while my guitar gently weeps. Doesnt qualify as a linear string solo.

    In relation to JERRY GARCIA - many people have left message about how the linear system is the "same thing that Jerry Garcia" used. Not even close. JERRY GARCIA in the 40 something years he played guitar - BARELY KNEW the FRETBOARD. What little he did figure out was never any planned or even slightly organized method, He learned by randomly fishing for notes and putting them into short, compact POSITIONS - to which he could barely remember from week to week. He played chromatically mostly because he didnt know where he was going and just faked it most of the time. It all sounds great when you are on LSD.

    • @pebberbrown
      @pebberbrown  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No no - they respectively have their own systems - and McLaughlin in particular spends/has spent thousands of hours practicing scales. In one of the very first interviews in Guitar Player magazine back in 1974, Mclaughlin states "I practice ALL the scales." This is the key that opened the door to my entire journey so dont start talking shit that you know NOTHING about. Form1 and form 2 are part of the scaletone form system for guitar and it you EVER pull your arrogant ASS out of your head maybe you might spend some time in the way distant future checking it out. When learning things you know nothing about try not to say "whatever the fuck that is." Anyone with a brain can see you are so limited in your thinking to the point where you feel like you have to attack someone presenting something new.

      The singer from American hard rock band Kix (Steve Whiteman). This is what Lizzy Hale had to say. www.blabbermouth.net/news/halestorm-singer-on-getting-vocal-lessons-from-kixs-steve-whiteman-he-taught-me-literally-everything-he-knows/

    I am becoming aware that my playing is like dog tricks. Learn the trick...repeat the trick. Why the trick is as it is, I may never grasp.

    Some of the WORST F--ING ADVICE YOU CAN POSSIBLY TAKE from this joker! If you can't play HORIZONTALLY, YOU CAN'T PLAY! iF YOU CAN'T PLAY NOTES IN ISOLATION, BUT CAN ONLY FOLLOW THIS FAT TURD'S VERTICAL PLAYING, THEN YOU'LL NEVER LEARN THE GUITAR. What he's telling you - & let me translate this into the keyboard, is that similar to a piano teacher telling you NEVER to pay any sharps or flats (Horizontal note equivalents). If you follow his warped logic you would never learn to read at all. Fat, Potty Mouthed turd!
