    I didn't even make it through 2 minutes...She called a pelham a snaffle when she was referring to the mouth piece... A 'snaffle' refers to a bit that doesn't have a curb, therefore no leverage. A pelham is not a snaffle. Sure it had a smooth mouth piece but that doesn't equate to a snaffle.

    • @Mickey27_
      @Mickey27_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      She probably was talking about how the pelham was jointed in the middle like a snaffle is, since there are variations of pelham bits

    • @joieellington399
      @joieellington399 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A pelham is a combination of a snaffle and curb bit, which is why there are two reins. The snaffle rein is for snaffle action, no leverage, and the curb rein is for curb action, with leverage. I personally just use the snaffle rein for contact and the curb for fine tuning my horse's head.

    Back in the 90's a hunter class we weren't allowed a martingale because it was based off the horse's movement in equation class you could.

      I believe that it is one with copper rollers. The mouthpiece is similar to that of a jointed snaffle in shape but is more square. The rollers let the horses play with the bit

    • @ilovedixieandisis123
      @ilovedixieandisis123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Megan Schaller I don't know what shows you go to, but by USEF you cannot use running martingales in hunter classes. They barely allow boots, only in the high hunters do they allow those. I've never seen a hunter have a running martingale and I do A and AA rated shows and have shown at WEF.

    • @MeganSchaller
      @MeganSchaller 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      by saying what you show in does not prove anything. there is no need to get snotty. this is taken right from the rule book. - "Standing and running martingales
      used in the conventional manner are allowed for all over fences classes. All other martingales are considered
      illegal. A judge must eliminate a horse or pony that competes in a martingale other than a standing or running
      martingale used in the conventional manner." www.usef.org/documents/ruleBook/2016/17-HU.pdf (:

    • @ilovedixieandisis123
      @ilovedixieandisis123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Megan Schaller I wasn't trying to get snotty about anything. I was saying about what I showed in because I've never seen any hunter with a running martingale and those are the higher rated shows. I guess if its in the rule books its fine, but I've never ever actually seen a hunter go in a class with a running martingale on. I guess it may just be trainer preferences whether they think its right to put a hunter in a running.

    one girl needs to learn to speak coherently and ditch the harsh bits !

    • @ilovedixieandisis123
      @ilovedixieandisis123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Some horses need harsher bits if they don't listen to the rider's leg, but I agree, the jumper does have quite a harsh bit in but he might need it since it is jumpers and horses can get super forward. I ride my jumper horse in a elevator because of this reason.

    • @BridgetCarta
      @BridgetCarta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      They don't need them, what they need is to go back to ground 0 with training and flatwork and maybe even groundwork. Bitting up is never the answer because it works as a bandaid, it doesn't solve problems. It masks them.

    • @ilovedixieandisis123
      @ilovedixieandisis123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Bridget Carta Some horses needs a harder bit while jumping. My lease horse gets strong while jumping so he wears a Pelham with connecters. When we flat he just wears a o ring with figure eight noseband. Some horses listen perfectly while jumping and some get excited to do their job. Whatever works for your horse, do it. Even if the horse flats and does cross rails like a beast, but when jumping higher and bigger the rider needs some extra breaks, I think that's fine.

    I was always thought that the martingale has to be running, that it was prohibited to have a standing martingale in SJ

    • @mcmolly2887
      @mcmolly2887 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's best to have no martingale during a hunter class because it's based off the horse's movement, allowed or not it's depending on how the judge may see it is always a chance they may not like it so for that reason better not to use one. but in equitation class yes you can use a running or standing martingale because as you know that's based of the rider not the horse.

    To everyone getting riled over the bit, yes you can train horses so they don’t need a bit at all. The rider will have to cowgirl up for that though. Regardless, these horses are cared for and fed. So what, they have to wear a pain-but a few hours a day. It’s a trade off we all have jobs that suck and cause discomfort. It’s part of life.
