Dude this goddamn game was a recurring obsession from the age of 4 - about 16 when my og gameboy finally died. same save, never colour and never finished. so hard to play, hard to see and hard to replace. loved it and hated it like no other game.
I love it when companies aren't afraid to branch out and do silly things. I think Nintendo experimented a lot more with the GameBoy because it had no competitors, so it didn't matter if the games weren't as refined, they could experiment, and they made some great games because of that. And Rare's constant demolishing on the 4th wall, perfect.
Man, I remember being a kid with a Gameboy but no SNES. I played the SHIT out of Donkey Kong Land. The scaled down graphics were awful, but the scaled down music was AMAZING
That "Huh...no, no, it kind of works," line for the end credits made me laugh out loud. Such a delightful review series, I'm glad I'm subscribing now. It's great to watch your videos adapt and change over time.
Well said. I had Land 2 (no clue where I got it) when I was younger and actually played it before Country 2. I liked it, but it's still a watered-down version of the superior title. Plus, Land 2 was extremely close to the original, while Land 1 did an all-new thing. That being said, MAN if Land 1 isn't irritating. I grabbed it on the eShop and was ready to throw my system a few times. The controls aren't precise, enemies and pits appear immediately because the screen barely shows anything, and that darn cloud platform level made me tear my hair out. It's not an awful game, but it was certainly limited by the Game Boy.
Ben Stegner I had Land 1 when I was a kid, but it put me off the series. I got Land III a few years later at the same time as the Game Boy Pocket, and enjoyed it a lot more. Then I _finally_ got Land 2 just last year, to play on the RetroN 5, haha. Gah, that cloud platform level... sorry if I have to turn in my gamer card, but I don't think I'd have EVER done it without savestates. I'm sure I _could_ do it, I just wouldn't want to. I'd never beaten Land 2 or III (isn't that nomenclature weird?), but I'm further along in 2 than I've ever been, playing on the 3DS. It's very solid for the Game Boy, but how in the world did anybody beat Target Terror on the old blurry screen? That's the roller coaster stage where you have to hit check barrels and avoid X barrels to open doors. But even on the 3DS, I have trouble telling them apart.
Ben Stegner I played Land 2 a few weeks ago from the eShop and honestly, I loved it. It's one of the best games I played on there, and easily my favorite of the DKC handheld games. The level design is just really solid, the bosses are fun despite being very watered down, and the music is great.
I couldn't disagree more. Donkey Kong Land is by far the best of the gameboy trilogy. It had original levels and felt like a unique game, whereas its sequels were more or less typical mediocre ports with cut/less content than its home console counterparts.
SheepyTina Everything in any Ducktales is perfect! Ducktales is love, Ducktales is life! I wish there'd be a Ducktales themed beer. Or Rum! It would combine my two favourite things! And I could have a Ducktales Rum&Coke while watching Ducktales!
I got NOWHERE on this game on my original gameboy - but when the Gameboy Color came out, I completely rediscovered it - it is much more playable on that system as you point out.
Yes same here! It's the very first game I ever owned and was the first game a had which my cousin gave to me when i recieved my gameboy advance. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
I was mind blown away at the time but i soon realized that there were many issues & bugs wich renders the gameplay to be a bit annoying such as flickering sprites,no dying tune and if you die with a second kong,he will not alway's appear. Also the bonus levels in each level are not line up with the related theme of that coresponding level and theres no world map screen and saving the is ackward.
You know, I am kind of amazed. I got DKL2 the year it came out, for my gameboy pocket. I was obsessed with it, I played it every single day. The game wasn't even in color but it completely captivated my imagination. The motion blur is far worse than the video shows if you're playing on original hardware, and it was absolutely horrendous on the green screen gameboys, especially the first DKL. The best way to play these is on the super gameboy/snes and CRT television if you have one, but I'm sure the downloadable rereleases are cleaner looking too. Donkey Kong is probably my favorite series, the snes trilogy is ultimate but I will always love the gameboy ones, Rare pushed the gameboy to it's limits for sure.
Your patreon is doing really well at the minute. It's nice to see your success just get bigger and bigger. Nice video as well Josh, DKR is one of my favorite racing titles so I'm looking forward to that one too.
Blunderbuss Reviews Yeah, man, going monthly and making it a "donate what you want" system was definitely the way to go, and I'm really excited about how things are progressing. And trust me, Diddy Kong Racing is going to be a good one!
The Geek Critique I can't wait for the Diddy Kong Racing Video. That and Donkey Kong 64 are my two personal favourite N64 games. Thanks for making the awesome content!
I was born in 85’ and as a result; I grew up at the perfect time to be immersed in the 16-bit era, and as a Genesis owner I was always insanely jealous of super Nintendo owners and wanted to be on that side so bad but I didn’t have the means to buy one until few years later. The first Nintendo system that I got besides the NES was a translucent clear Game Boy during the PlayItLoud era, in my two favorite games on that system or links awakening and donkey Kong land two. The yellow cartridge was really special to me because I was really into that sort of thing: alternate colors for game systems. By the late 90s I was finally able to buy a super Nintendo after I getting an N64 and I collected all the best games for each but I’ll never forget the original game boy and some of the games like DKL that made me feel like I was finally on team Nintendo. Nowadays I can afford what I want but it was strangely comforting to have to pick a side back then when you were just a kid with no money.
I 100%'d this game legitimately as a kid and i can honestly say that finding all of the secrets was a huge endeavor. A lot secrets are invisible meaning you just had to touch the right part of a screen to be whisked away to a secret room. Sometimes there was a barrel to reach, sometimes it was literally nothing and you just got lucky haha
I disagree. The level design in DKL2 and DKLIII was repetitive and the gimmicks in them uninteresting. DKL, despite having odd graphical issues and a wonky camera at times, at least had great level design, unique and fun gimmicks for each one, and made its own mark in the franchise with its own archetypes and enemies. DKL is the better game, it's not without problems, but I'd much rather sit down with it than DKL2 or 3.
Juliusaurus yeah that's what I was thinking too country games should be enjoyed on console land all three lands should have been there own tangents from the same story like Mario land 1,2 and 3 wario at least then it makes more sense to own all the games
All I remember about this "Land" trilogy, was that it was virtually unplayable on the original Game Boy, mostly due to the screen's ghosting. The only way to get some enjoyment out of them, was to play them on a GBC (or higher).
It was so attractive to have such a mini-format "high-class" game. Actually, although there are vastly better opportunities, thinking about this it still can create that feeling for some reason (I don't own it and don't remember playing it, but I can imagine).
I'd like to see DKC return to a construction zone themed level like in DKL. It could have a plot where Kremlings (or any villain) is invading DK Island by cutting down trees and building concrete structures!
It’s good to see these get covered. It’s crazy how good this stuff looks considering it’s on a system as weak as the Gameboy. And yeah, I do love how the game goes for a crazy silly story that I love with some great settings.
The big issue with the original DKL was that the screen was too small, and so there were more than a few blind jumps, but it is definitely the best DKL game because of the unique level design (abstract art in the clouds being my favorite) and great music.
Third time watching and I have to agree with you on DKL. I picked it up a little while ago being a very big fan of DKC and I agree with everything you said. I'm so used to fast an kinetic gameplay, and this was kind of disappointing for me. not that it's bad or anything, just not what I was expecting. The later DKL games were big improvements.
You may say this was a lackluster entry... And I understand that. But Donkey Kong Land was actually my first exposure to the series and in fact the first Nintendo-brand game I ever played (since I grew up with a SEGA Genesis). I wouldn't be as big a fan of DK and Nintendo in general if I didn't play it. ^w^
I was always confused as a kid that aside from the famous SNES DK games, there were Game Boy DK games that were different but similar, and Game Boy Color DK games that were way more similar than different, and GBA DK games that were the same things as the second set of Game Boy ones but better . . . .
The first time playing DKC was at my friends house and i was speechless. I kept begging and annoying the hell out of my parents, trying to get what i want to shut up. Must have drove my sister crazy, 'cause she got me the game DKL on gb. Having such fond memories of countless hours i've spend starring at a black/greenish screen. I remember having this magnify glass attached with my gb. Didn't help or increase much really imo. Donkey Kong has to be one of my favorite games for the original GameBoy
I remember playing this on the gameboy, and Super Gameboy, I have to admit that even back then, I was fairly impressed they managed to do such a close approximation of the SNES style. Ah the days of trying to catch just enough light to see the screen but not have it reflect a glare into your eyes all while keeping your head and neck at uncomfortable angles. The gameboy really was terrible to actually use.
Sadly donkeykong land never reached popularity as the pokemon series did, i just wish the donkeykong land series did caught more attention ,why the donkeykong country series on the snes blow everyones mind, even the gbc version of donkeykong country did not get the attention it deserved, because i really remember how i was mind blown away from donkeykong land running on gbc as well as seeing donkeykong country on gbc, man i was just mind blown away.
I have such fond memories of Donkey Kong Land 2. Was the first video game I ever owned. Got it for Christmas along with my red Gameboy Pocket. I had a nostalgia rush seeing footage of it T_T
I'm a huge fan of the SNES trilogy and have always sort of wondered if these games were enjoyable. Wow. That's the actual storyline? That's hilarious! :)
The original compositions in DKL by David Wise are really nifty. They fit in well with the DKC soundscape, and are surprisingly memorable. In fact, it's a bummer none of them ended up on 16-bit software. And the fact that DKL2 and DKL3 had no original compositions is a bigger bummer. Graeme Norgate also composed some great tracks for the game, but they don't fit in with the DKC soundscape.
This was one of very few Gameboy games I ever picked up, and it's my second favorite game for the system. The number one being of course Pokémon Blue. Although I didn't have particularly many other games.
The first DKL was awesome. By peculiar if you mean more creative, than I agree, gb ports were generally more interesting games than their console counterparts.
Never heard of Animusic! The video came from here: th-cam.com/video/ENIbCrVc8uk/w-d-xo.html The problem with Big Ape City becoming New Donk City is that Big Ape City is very firmly somewhere proximate to Donkey Kong Island. Mario Odyssey's map doesn't show that. But with the Returns era changing the whole look of the island, I guess anything's possible! Odyssey definitely leans hard in that direction.
I posted that comment before I watched the video, but Animusic was this music video series about musical instruments that played themselves, much like Colby's video. Considering how wild and inconsistent the Mario universe's geography is, I guess it could be possible that they're the same location. I'm kinda surprised DK Island wasn't even mentioned in passing in Odyssey, same with Sarsaland.
DKL1 definitely one of my favourite platformers ever. No Mario series game but definitely at the forefront of the rest. I thought the graphics were great if a little unrefined and viewability didn't really bother me to your degree. I'd quibble with your complaint over game-play but you never made it past world 2 so... yeah. Get better at games. Music was awesome too.
jamesage100 Hm? I beat Donkey Kong Land completely while making this video. I'd never done it before, though. I think I got stuck on the cloud level when I was a kid.
The Geek Critique Fair balls to you then. I'll agree with your comparison to the next two in the series as they were stretching the gb hardware to its limits. Still a great game in my book though.
Sadly, there's no way to make the sprites and background different colors on the eShop versions. You can switch between black and white "Game Boy Pocket" style, which is the default, or a black and green "DMG Game Boy" style.
FU? DKL1 was great on the game boy! I think those where the best GFX for a gameboygame. (Suggestions of games with better GFX than DK always welcome) No other game was so sofistacted. I did not had snes and i was happy i could play the kongs. Only good memory on that yellow cartridge.
reason gameboy games where more creative. because they where made by a different team.. one backed by the creator of gameboy... who ended up inventing wario
So I got DK Land 1 before I saw this review but....well I still dont care. I had $5 in credit and wanted to play them in order. I am a die hard DK fan. Have been since SNES. A good way to make sure you can beat this game is to redo the 1st lvl anytime you are low on lives. Make sure to memorize the lvl (you will anyways). Memorize it and get 2-3 lives per playthrough The 1st level is short enough so you will be able to get good and get extra lives.. that's how I plan to beat the game. The Black and White only colors are a B*TCH and I wish Nintendo would have made these games with the colors you see in the GBC but it is what it is. $3.99 I really cant ask for much. I do not regret this purchase and I am now on World 3. I will beat them damn it! ALL OF THEM! >:D
These games came out before the GBC (except for the Japanese version of DK Land 3). The Game Boy Color just uses a default palette for Gameboy games, but you can change the palette as seen here: imgur.com/jZUXMp2 (this also works on a GBA running GB games). If you would like the play the DK Land series in color in a way they were designed for, you can play them on an SNES with a Super Game Boy. If you don't mind giving up the portable aspect of these games, this is definitely the best way to play them.
Trust me when I say, I'd LOVE to donate to your Patreon, but I unfortunately can't for two reasons: I'm 14 years old, and I have no income......because I'm 14 years old. Sorry.

The Geek Critique Dk Land looked amazing for what it was
Dude this goddamn game was a recurring obsession from the age of 4 - about 16 when my og gameboy finally died. same save, never colour and never finished. so hard to play, hard to see and hard to replace. loved it and hated it like no other game.

I actually like the scaled down graphics
@@constancies No offense, but why tho?
That "Huh...no, no, it kind of works," line for the end credits made me laugh out loud. Such a delightful review series, I'm glad I'm subscribing now. It's great to watch your videos adapt and change over time.
For whatever reason, I enjoyed the Donkey Kong Land series almost as much as the original games.
Right? I found them to be just fine. Responsive controls, decent enough to look at for what it is.
I did too. I much preferred it on the super game boy, but these were still really fun

2:02 Oh, these are pretty cool bananas.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I absolutely love that you cover Donkey Kong Land no one else covers it. This video deserves more attention.
Games
I'm Working on a video game called Sonic Advance 4!
Yes, no portable port of a game could be as perfect as the one for Ducktales.
The music in DuckTales 2 GB though. ahhhhh, yes.
SheepyTina Everything in any Ducktales is perfect! Ducktales is love, Ducktales is life! I wish there'd be a Ducktales themed beer. Or Rum! It would combine my two favourite things! And I could have a Ducktales Rum&Coke while watching Ducktales!
Yeah, I'm totally okay with some shorter videos if it means we get more of them!
The save screen music in DKL 1 is one my favorite songs in any game ever. Love that groove
I got NOWHERE on this game on my original gameboy - but when the Gameboy Color came out, I completely rediscovered it - it is much more playable on that system as you point out.
DK Land was the first DK I owned and as such holds a special place in my heart. Also, love them there DK Vine cameos in the vid ;)
Yes same here! It's the very first game I ever owned and was the first game a had which my cousin gave to me when i recieved my gameboy advance. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Whenever you got all the bonuses in a level, you got that exclamation point on the world map, right?
I thought that was a corn dog:P
Your not the only one. It took me a while to figure out what the thing was.
Dude I thought it was a feather
All I remember about this "Land" trilogy, was that it was virtually unplayable on the original Game Boy, mostly due to the screen's ghosting. The only way to get some enjoyment out of them, was to play them on a GBC (or higher).

The Snes DKCs already would have benefited from a bigger screen, so I don't want to imagine the DKL ones.
Great video as always.
Donkey Kong Land was great. Since I played it on the Game Boy Pocket originally, graphics weren't really an issue.
Liked the video but I have to say I liked the longer videos. Maybe that's just me though.
Liam Compton Don't worry, I'll still do those, too. It's just that not every game demands 15+ minutes.
I had no idea DKC was scaled down for a GameBoy version! Wow!
I had DKL 2 as a kid; enjoyed every bit of it back then.
I remember this game being so fucking hard back in the day.
it's so impressive. I kinda wanna see the game as an snes game. Super Donkey Kong Land 1.5
1:31 this is Rare’s response to miyamoto’s stupid comment about dkc1
I remember playing this on the gameboy, and Super Gameboy, I have to admit that even back then, I was fairly impressed they managed to do such a close approximation of the SNES style. Ah the days of trying to catch just enough light to see the screen but not have it reflect a glare into your eyes all while keeping your head and neck at uncomfortable angles. Surprised no comment on how the last world is pretty much the classic DK construction site, realized with DKC-ish graphics.
2:02 Oh these are pretty cool bananas!
I'm a huge fan of the SNES trilogy and have always sort of wondered if these games were enjoyable. Wow. That's the actual storyline? That's hilarious! :)
I played this first on my brand new Game Boy Pocket (with the gray screen) and it was awesome.
1:54-2:00 I had to pause the video because I was laughing so much
I looked the idea of exploring the sunken Kremlin isle or that’s kind of how I thought of it at the time.
oh come on! It was not that hard to see things on a gameboy! Do all critics have 20/200 vision?
The first Land game was actually my first game ever.
This was one of very few Gameboy games I ever picked up, and it's my second favorite game for the system. The number one being of course Pokémon Blue.
Although I didn't have particularly many other games.
Great video! Can't wait to hear you talking about DKR! Will you cover the DS remake too?
SheepyTina I grabbed DKC Returns on 3DS just a few weeks ago. Can't wait to check it out!
Ben Stegner I think they were referring to Diddy Kong Racing, and Diddy Kong Racing DS.
ThatNameless Guy Yep! The end of the video says that too.
i had no problem completing these games on the orginal gc
The first DKL was awesome. By peculiar if you mean more creative, than I agree, gb ports were generally more interesting games than their console counterparts.
i remember i really liked this game back in the day, i believe i got it in a bundle with a yellow gameboy :)
is there a rom for the gbc version
The DKL version of "Gangplank Galleon" was superior to the DKC version. I will not accept otherwise.
The 3DS is the best console because you can play all three DCK AND DCL games and Diddy Kong Racing DS is also there!
No mention that the original DKC assets were lost, so they had to remake the game from scratch, thus liberties were taken?
2:03
Oh these are pretty cool bananas
AHHHHHHHH
I played it on GBA color and I loved it.
Since when did Cranky Kong and King K Rool exchange phone numbers
I used to be unable to pass level 3-2 or 3-3 as a kid
You really should’ve played it on the Super Game Boy.
what is that clip of 3d animated instruments at the begining? I know I've seen that before!
I wonder why so many Game Boy platformers have Land in the title
Also is the plot for DKL 2 & 3 the same as DKC 2 & 3 because you didn’t talk about it
Do I spy Animusic footage in the intro? Now that's a deep cut reference. Also, my headcanon is that Big Ape City is actually New Donk City.
Never heard of Animusic! The video came from here: th-cam.com/video/ENIbCrVc8uk/w-d-xo.html
The problem with Big Ape City becoming New Donk City is that Big Ape City is very firmly somewhere proximate to Donkey Kong Island.
3:50 Gay Bowser is out. Gay Rool is in.
DKL had no minecart levels, which automatically made it superior, and a much more forgiving save system. Also, best music in the series.
What? No.
i have all the dkc games on my n3ds except for tropical freeze and with DKL and i think i've died although i knew i had diddy
Those are actually pretty good graphics for the original Gameboy.
When you get them on the e-shop, are you restricted to black and white? Or can you get them in color, too?
Sadly, there's no way to make the sprites and background different colors on the eShop versions. You can switch between black and white "Game Boy Pocket" style, which is the default, or a black and green "DMG Game Boy" style.
Just bought this game.
Ich liebte DKLand da ich kein SNES hatte und zockte es auf dem originalen Gameboy .Die Grafik machte kein Problem für mich
Umm, this looks AMAZING for a Gameboy game.
Something about pretty cool bananas
What a great game.
DID YOU JUST INCLUDE SMASH UNDER THE MARIO SPORTS GAME UMBRELLA
FU? DKL1 was great on the game boy!
I think those where the best GFX for a gameboygame. (Suggestions of games with better GFX than DK always welcome)
No other game was so sofistacted.
I did not had snes and i was happy i could play the kongs.
Only good memory on that yellow cartridge.
I liked the DKL series.
reason gameboy games where more creative.
because they where made by a different team.. one backed by the creator of gameboy... who ended up inventing wario
Awesome!
Video starts at 0:08
Yeah the DKL games are unplayable on an OG Gameboy. Thankfully there were SGB and GB Pocket.
DK was in the original mario kart, not just 64
was a good and nice game
I think the donkey kong land games have better animation than the gbc version of donkey kong country
I love this game! I just 100%'d it last night.
congratulations.
Bought it on the 3ds eshop. Its objectively terrible, but I like it
I always Liked dk Land 2 best
Trust me when I say, I'd LOVE to donate to your Patreon, but I unfortunately can't for two reasons: I'm 14 years old, and I have no income......because I'm 14 years old. Sorry.
Why is wrinkly Kon white? Is she a ghost? Did she die??!??
