I've been looking for a storage idea for my colored pencils too and have had no luck... until now! This is exactly what I envisioned and was looking for! Thank you for such a simple idea. I think I can actually make this without help from my husband...lol. TFS!
TOM! Thank YOU so much for an easy to follow storage container! It was EXACTLY what I needed to get my Bead Tubes under control without spending tons of money! I like how your voice is clear and easy to follow, and the speed was perfect for me! Thanks again. Ill be Watching YOU ha ha
Just watched your prismacolor organizer video and now this one...awesome. I wanted something to hold my watercolor pencils while I'm sitting at my desk. This is terrific! Thanks!
Tom, you ROCK! This is such a "problem solver". Purchasing the couplers is not directly in my "budget", (too much clay to buy), however, I have been saving vitamin and such bottles for quite some time, I believe these might work as I've retained many of the same sizes and even same color for planning just such a project. Just hadn't got to sitting down to think of the particulars yet. So, thank you again. I've cut off the tops of the bottles to reveal 3-3/4 h x 2-1/2 w bottles with the bottoms still attached. Of course, removing the labels, via hot soapy water and a "Goo-Gone" type product if necessary and will then proceed with your plan. Brilliant Tom, Thank you again.
I love that idea. Something I would never of thought about doing. Thanks for sharing this with us.. You have a load of pencils. I am lucky if I have 2 lol
great idea.... very creative.... I was actually looking for a way tor organize nuts bolts and screw and your video came up. thank you for posting this.
Ooo, glad you had that new table covered. We women can get a bit sideways about that. LOL Really like your pencil storage. Think I might make one like that for my clay tools and maybe one for my brushes. Thank you!!!
It's super useful that's for sure. If you have access to a compound miter caw (or anything that can cut 90 degree angles) you can just cut pieces from a full stick of PVC pipe instead of using the couplings reducing the cost a bit. Just pick a size and follow this tutorial from there :D And you're welcome!
Respond to this video... awesome tip with the 5mm cutting space!!! I'll definitely start doing that from now on! I never really had a problem with it building speaker boxes and such, but those are larger items too..
@TruthSeekingElf AWESOME!! Keep it organized!! Yay! Seriously.. I could not find this for sell, and its free for you to use.. thank you for the support!
@strube1369 maybe so... lol... but they may run out of black.. or maybe golden yellow, then its off to the store again!! rofl! One of the main reasons for switching to PRISMACOLOR was the ability to buy a single color.. each pencil has a unique item number, so I built a pencil holder for them with a single slot per pencil. Once I run out or lose the pencil, I just look at the item number. cool, huh?
I'm going to make one for my jewelry tools, one for my clay tools, one for my painting tools... The couplings could also be just 'slices' of pvc pipe - there are some easy to use cutting tools for that - for the smaller tools or the shorter things like alcohol inks. I've had mine tip over and drip on my desk, and this rack will help prevent that.
Just wanted to bring up the point that if you are making a large one of these, buying a long length of PVC then cutting it to size would be much more cost effective.
Hi Tom, this is a really cool video and great idea. I've never seen the liquid nails stuff before. I am looking to make a storage thing for my pencils (they are just crayola but I have a ton of them and always get new ones). I want to try making one of the rotating kind with a lazy susan and these couplings, but if that doesn't work out I think I'll try this. Thanks for the great idea and easy instructions. I have subscribed.
I had completely forgot about Liquid Nails! I am trying to design an easel for paintings, some as large as 16x20, which I display at craft shows. Now you have given me an idea to play with. I don't have a laser engraver anymore, but I have lots of wood. Some taller pieces of pvc might help stabilize paintings in the back, and maybe very short ones in the front. Just sayin'....
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this before, but you can also get some cheap PVC pipe and just cut it down to the right height or use actual cups - you can get them at the dollar store or buy sets of cups on clearance from any number of places. :)
@Cyber000000 good Lord, no... those are regular Crayola and Roseart... Prisimacolor pencils go for about $1.50 a piece.. ...so if allll those pencils were the HQ brand, it would have costed about $450!!!! Heck, the 80 Prizimacolors I got cost over $100 as it is.. [I got them 40% off at hobby-lobby] they are worth it though.. VERY vivid, and blend PERFECTLY
Hi Tom nice to meet you :) wow!!! love your idea, great and easy to follow tutorial well done ... looking forward to watching your other videos :) hope you don't get in trouble with your wife LOL!!!.... keep up the great work :) Have a great day :) Magz :)
Hey tom - this storage is amazing! I will try to make my own, too! Thank you for sharing this, it is indeed easier to craft than I thought. Would you tell me what height those tubes have? The are just big enough to hold new, long pencils but you can also grab the old/much used ones!
@markasomerville its about a years worth of collecting sets here and there.. I kept running out of certain colors.. and no problem! Hope this helps.. =D
I made something like this made out of the cardboard out of toilet paper rolls, and ramen noodle bulk boxes. Just stick the tubes in the box and you are ready to go. This looks much better though. lol
@flawerprincessqa I imagine you could use many different things to do this.. even paper and glue. I chose couplings because of their strength.. this should last a lifetime. =D
hey tom, it's krystlejoy...my old account is 7frozencupcakes...anyways I want to make some of these...I want one just for my prismacolor colored pencils and my drawing pencils...and a slightly bigger one for copic markers. but i was wondering how tall you cut the tubes for the pencils? did you cut the your self or can lowes or home depot cut it for me?! lol...i feel like such a girlie girl...i don't have any tools...and i probably wouldn't even know what to do with them :-/ haha
@Cyber000000 BTW... the wife laughed when she see saw this video... it was funny. My desk is covered in little pieces of clay.. Oo ..and I needed a place to do this.. sooo... =P

im gonna have to make my husband build one of these...right now lol
Thank you for sharing on how to do this.

Fabulous!! Such an ingenious but simply solution & project. Thanks for sharing!

I've made storage units like this before, only instead of couplings I just cut PVC pipe to length. A bit more work, but significantly cheaper.
@ScandinavianMom You bet!! paint it, and it becomes a even MORE personalized gift!! Thanks for watching!!
@MrOwlDre You can get it all from Lowe's, glad to hear you can use this!! Woot!
I bought a plastic wine rack and i used it to organise my pencils, because it's safer when the sharp tops of the pencils are not pointing up
@DemonicRainbows Thank you, I'm glad you like it!!
Genius!! :)
+Sylvia Catalano I really appreciate the thought lol and thank you for watching means everything
What kind of camera do you use?
Great idea I subscribed
@MsLovin2010 It may "look" that way.. but I'm nothing of the sort ROFL!! =D Thanks for watching!
@ArtJourneyUK No problem!! Thank you so much for watching!!!

Where can I buy all of the supplies?

"Hopefully she doesn't kill me to bad" Lol, to funny
this is amazing! Can you tell me what size and type of wood you used? tysm
That would be great if you have a bunch of cables too
@flawerprincessqa I imagine you could use many different things to do this.. even paper and glue. I chose couplings because of their strength.. this should last a lifetime. =D
@onetube2u Flip Mino HD ...it only does 720P though..
it does the job, but I'll be upgrading first chance I get. =D
+Polymer Clay Artist I love this! How thick is the wood you're using? I want to get the height between each tier right. Thanks!
where did u get the couplings? btw i love your video!
this looks like a much smaller version of the one you show isn't it?
Very nice. Or u could use toilet/hand paper roll. Just an idea
@CraftyGamer Thanks, and mee too =P
