“Rosa Enjeitada” - Hermínia Silva
Your pronunciation of the word "Fado" is spot on. We, the Portuguese, are impressed!
Wow, this is quality, beauty and professionalism. I am impressed, you totally defined fado. Your voice is amazing I wish I heard the rest at the end. All the best for you from Portugal.
Thank you DD!!
You're more than welcome Alicia
Fado is the soul to our country, the poetry defines our struggles, passion, love, history.... you said "Fado" quite well.
New York and Lisbon, such a different world, 2 major important cities, Lisbon once the capital of the 1st global empire, New York the capital of capitalism. Nice video, Fado is very intriguing
@Aaron Marques Well, makes a all diference, look at the temperatures!
There is almost 2000 years of history in Lisbon as a city. New York is an toddler compared to Lisbon . Only age wise of course. Fado is something so ours that it makes me proud when people from outside experience that feeling we feel when hearing it.
Lisbon is 400 years older than Rome
You mean 2700 year old 😉 700 years makes a big difference especially when it is nearly 3 times more than the Country you comparing it too 😉

Portugal herself is Younger than Most of her. towns
I am humbled that you sought out Fado and traveled to Lisboa to learn more it. Your and your talent will find a very large welcome.
this is waaaaaaaaay beyond amazing! hopefully there will be more episodes about fado.
Congratulations for your voice and your work. And thank you for enjoying our culture
Thank you so much João Santos! Your culture is easy to enjoy. Thank YOU for welcoming me. :)
Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed it. We will have more travel stories to come soon. Stay tuned!
What incredible talent and grace Alicia has - very much enjoyed learning about Fado at a level I couldn't have achieved reading from a book.
Thank you so much, Melissa - this means so much!
amazing... Fado has a kind of a gospel thing, but a personal one instead of a religious background.
You may know "Foi por vontade de Deus".... but whereas gospel developed in the fields, Fado has its origins in cafés, taverns, on the streets.
And please I recommend you to know the Canção de Coimbra, or Fado de Coimbra as some call it, which is sung by the university students, as a mean to express their love for the old academic city and for their loved one.
José Afonso, Carlos Paredes, Luiz Goes....
I can't wait to check this out, Lino - thank you for these recommendations!!
+ Adriano Correia de Oliveira, Francisco Fanhais
Congratulations, you nailed it, in every way, a very interesting video! I hope you liked Portugal, as much as I liked your voice! 👏👏
This was excellent! Great camera work, seamless editing, emotional soundtrack. Brilliant! Hats off, people. Parabéns. Wish I was part of the production. By the way, the best fado I've ever heard sung by an estrangeiro or non-Portuguese, is the song "Fado Hilario" sung by KD Lang and guitar by Antonio Chainho. The song was recorded for the Onda Sonora - Red Hot & Lisbon CD back in 1998. Look for it. Pick it up. Had KD Lang been Portuguese, she would have easily been one of the greatest fadistas of all time, rivalling even Amalia Rodrigues. Again, great job on the video. Cheers!
Light years away from Amália Rodrigues.
This is beautiful. I appreciate @skyhour sharing the story of a talented artist who is learning a new style. It's the magical potential of travel! Can't wait for more stories!
Its a song but its not fado... love this phrase. Little country big emotions big discoveries 🇵🇹👍
Alicia you pronounced FADO perfectly :)
Great video, we need more of this, thanks for comparing Lisbon to New York and not San Francisco ;)
What a pity , the video is finished so soon !!!
This NYC singer is incredible. Very close to authentic style of Lisbon fado singers. Thanks for sharing this video!
You really should try discovering traditional music from Cabo Verde, mornas, your voice reminds of Cesaria Evora
Her dad is initially stuck in the American mindset. She's great for really wanting to learn and embrace a different culture. She has a beautiful, strong voice. Once she learns the language better, she will be able to sing fado with true passion.
Your voice is amazing. Wish more success and progress.
Amazing voice, already its hard to sing fado. Love it. Iove your voice, love your vibrato, congratulations
what an inspiring clip ❤
Thank you, Olivia! There will be more travel stories told soon! Where do you want to travel?? Set your Skyhour travel goal today to get there asap!
This is truly mesmerising. I almost feel like I'm listening to Marian Anderson singing Fado. It saddens me how it ends suddenly, however. Does that last performance exist?
3:55 is one of the most beautiful images I've seen in a long time
It is really inspiring... the video is so caching the soul of Fado... And you are so beautiful, really beautiful all the time, that kind of beauty that transcends body.... Thank you...
Portugal is the right place for you to go. You're a true musician, and so beautiful and intelligent.... I'm almost falling in love here (but I'm already taken - and by another opera singer who went Folk). Fado is Portugal's Soil Music, like blues was in Memphis when Memphis, back when it had a soul.
It's not Gospel, it's more about the Sin (with a capital 'S'). One musical lament weeps, "Not even my walls hear me confess it, not even in my dark room alone at midnight."
One song title is dedicated "To all my people who wash their clothes in the river".
So poor they don't have washing machines, or even coin for a visit to the laundromat. They use their hands, a stream of water and rocks. Fado tells their heartbreak stories of loss, loneliness, and a soul darkened but never extinguished, as long as the loss or estrangement burns.
It comes like a flame from a dark place.
The language is 14th Century Latin from Burgundy France - Don Afonso learned it in the court of his Father after they carved out with swords and maces the beginning a of a kingdom that Mauritania had stolen earlier about 711AD.
The lyrics are in a French and Africanized Medieval Latin still in use today in Lisboa all the way to Rio, and even Mo¢ambique.
From the tiny snippet that we heard of you singing Fado, I would say less vibrato. But I am a complete amateur and can't sing my way out of a paper bag!😁😁😁
Dope Video! Sending blessing your way, Keep inspiring!🎒🙌🏻
So beautiful and inspiring. It's a pleasure to have you in my country.
Beautiful film, well done, but aaaaaaa too short! 8 minutes passed by much too fast, would have loved to see and hear more of Alice‘s voice!
This is a fantastic video thanks. I noticed with fado you need to know what youre saying, because its really really sad music. But beautiful. Great video.
I love her~~~ It just rings.... so beautiful~!~!!!!
Amazing! Thank you so much to get the courage needed to sing Fado. You're the living proof that it doesn't matter if you are respecting Fado when you sing it, because every time you make a true effort to understand the deepness of a music style you're always respecting that music. Respect is in your heart and in the way you make your path towards a music. Thank You.
Madam!
You are saying it the absolute correct pronunciation
We need the second part.
Perfect! Greetings from Portugal!
So where is the fado she sang? 🙏
"was it OK that I used my own voice? cause I don't want to imitate but also be respectful. // you are being respectful. I you need to sing with your voice, not with someone else's voice."

Great story, loved it
To really understand FADO you really must not only know the language, the culture and above all else, the History.
Understanding FADO is going deep into the portuguese soul, our roots.
Go all the way, my dear, and you'll find who you really are... because FADO (from the latin word FACTUM) is us: simple but at the same time so complicated! Warm welcome to the best country in the World: PORTUGAL.
Did I miss something?
It's a song, but it's not Fado. Gorgeous perspective. Simply love it. Welcome to Portugal ✨hope you enjoy it
Cool 💞💞💞💞💞
MUITO BONITA E MUITO TALENTOSA!!!!
A singer doesn't need to know all the techniques in the world to be a good singer... but it helps a lot to like to know how to sing fado.
Good choice. Welcome to the world's home were you can free your mind.
Parabéns, só precisa não parar!
I'll be doing the same in Lisbon 3/18/2023 .
the vocal part of Fado can be put into pages, but the latitude is so big that is pointless to do so
OBRIGADO!!!!
Impressive and beautiful singer. This is an example of cultural stature, a lot of talent, enormous quality and musical sensitivity that goes through the whole body. Absolutely fantastic.
Your voice is great for fado 🇵🇹
All the best for you! Have a beautiful staying in our Portugal! O vídeo está muito lindo, tal como você. 🌿🌺🌿🌺🌿
No, you are saying IT very well!

The origin of fado comes from african slaves in Portugal who remembered Africa.
That is not true. Fado is an urban style born in the XIX century in Lisbon. I was sung by white portuguese people from the poorest neighbourhoods in the city like Alfama or Mouraria. Slavery was already illegal in Portugal and there were almost no african people in the country, only in the colonies. The origins of fado are said to be in gypsy and moorish music probably. Therefore, I am sorry, but fado have absolutely nothing to do with african slaves and their culture, there are many other portuguese styles influenced by them, but fado is definitely not on of them
