The reason more and more people are being diagnosed with mental illness is because there's been more awareness and attention and less stigma toward mental illness.
He's right about the depression fact. I was suffering from depression and would feel physical pain when I hit a low. I started exercising and it went away. Endorphins are one hell of a drug.
People don't even know how true this is, and worst is, some mindless corporate boffins keep spouting this bullshit that it's complicated, nah, it's simple, this is no accident.
thank you bill, for also bagtalizing autism and adhd. you just helped discrimate against a whole group off people who have been puit down and let down their entire life, just for being different than (nearly) everyone else.
I only mentioned dementia when you asked about my experience with mental illness. The disease I spent most of my time discussing was schizophrenia, which correlates with excess dopamine in the brain. Schizophrenics do not appear to have any structural brain damage, so it appears that schizophrenia is at least in large part brought about by a chemical imbalance. It, thus, is also a "physiological" problem. How do you differentiate mental problems from physical ones when it seems that all or
I want to add something my doc told me in response to my concerns about takeing a mood stabalizer: He said " People tend to give way too much credit to medications and what they can do. They won't "control" you. They minimize the intensity of your condition so you and your body can actually manage it." He was right , btw.
"We wont stop being sick until we stop making ourselves sick." [thoughtful pause, cocked eyebrow.... audience looks around at each other..."uh...yeah! Right on Bill! Exactly! He is SO smart!]
I'm not talking about a type I diabetic or a case of pneumonia. But you notice that the majority of ads aren't addressing issues like that. They're addressing things like depression, insomnia, fatigue, gas, etc. Again, many times the above things do require treatment but in so many cases they could be avoided or mitigated with more sleep, exercise, less stress, and healthier food.
I think US allowing pharmaceutical companies to advertise prescription drug is a big mistake. "Do you ever feel tired? Well, here's you answer..." People start to demand drugs from their doctors when they really don't need them.
After being prescribed medications that caused more illness than ever, then working closely with persons diagnosed with illnesses such as schizophrenia, I question if they were/ are, not more attuned than the average "normal" persons.
He's right about exercise and depression. I've noticed it in my own habits. Also I read that the physical cause of depression is a lack of neuron activity in the brain. It was in an article that proposed magnetism as a possible way of stimulating regions of the brain to start firing. However, exercise does the job even better as long as you're willing to get off your ass.
My doctor told me that pharmaceutical drugs are so expensive for the general public to buy because it costs exactly 1 billion dollors just to get ONE new drug passed through the FDA. 1 BILLION dollars? And are most of these drugs even necessary?
You see this is why in the UK, the National institute for clinical excellence (NICE) was a good thing, they were a more impartial board who decided whether a drug was actually statistically significant and decided whether to invest money in it. Many people hated it though because it blocked the sale of cancer drugs that showed minimal benefit and now the government wants to make the doctors in charge of what drugs to use. We just became a little more Americanised, and i hate it.
I love being an american, kinda... maybe, sometimes... I Bill Maher is so awesome, he's not afraid to say what we need to hear and not what we want to hear.
I see two psychiatrist one for my 6 year old daughter who has an anxiety disorder and ADHD. He not only doesn't feel it's right to prescribe anything to her, but feels that time and continual therapy will help her. I also see a psychiatrist myself, he has not 'diagnosed' me with anything, nor suggested meds. Sometimes a psychiatrist simply offers help and counseling.
@Stuartsaves he said "we won't stop being sick untill we stop making ourselves sick" It's the point of the entire rant really. Too many people drink, smoke, get fat, use drugs... He's urging people to start looking after their own bodies with that line.
The 96 people who hit the dislike button -54 were laughing so hard they hit the wrong button, 23 didn't like seeing someone think for themselves, and the 19 others because Bill does not believe there is an invisible man in the sky.
While I don't always agree with Maher's opinions on other topics, I believe he hits the mark with this video on the current state of health in the USA.
A large amount of the money spent is used to further research into cures, prevention, and early detection, such as delivery methods that only affect the cancer cells and none of the surrounding biomass.
@pkearne then i do apologize for my rant. and i do appreciate you being calm and pointing out the flaws. not many commenters on youtube are like that hehe. i do see you are knowledgeable in this field so i would like to ask a question and please correct me if im wrong: most of food is modified or filled with some sorts of chemicals that arent supposed to be there. wouldnt you say that those chemicals damage and cause diseases more frequently then random virus occurrences?
Funny how the comedies are some of the most honest and smartest people on earth like Bill Maher and George Carlin to name a few. To bad they didn't run our Counties...
"Most certainly I tell you, if you have faith, and don't doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you told this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it would be done." -Biblical Prophet
I suffered a spinal injury. A Chiropractor was able to help me recover (WITHOUT pain killers & surgery) when a Traditional Doctor was unable to. Pain Killers,They only mask the pain for a few hours until you need more. Chiropractors treat the Injured region of the Spine. Yes there are certain injuries which require surgery. However Chiropractors can treat most spinal injuries better than Traditional Doctors. I know one Chiropractor who is a Board Certified Physician & can preform surgery.
@Brownbear7388 He was mostly talking about how we should be worrying about our health before we get struck with a disease. Medication isn't all bad, but there are many cases where it seems unneeded.
We cured our Sons Kawasaki disease in 12 hours ( 2 days into fever stage ) refusing intravenous haomoglobulin which we were told carried a likely risk of serious side effects. we gave him juiced organic vegetables. Food has no side effects. After our astonishing discovery and success I wrote excitedly to various major heart foundations, they didn't exactly beat a path to our door. I was later to discover that ALL those foundations share board members with major Pharma companies. very sad.
QUESTION - Are vaccines safe and effective? The finding of his study was a clear yes! So please answer that direct question. If you disagree, then explain what you base your opinion on. If its just what YOU think, then explain how are you more qualified than a professor with several decades in the profession. Very simple.
@libbern Im from the USA and you are 100% correct on that. You said it all in that one statment sumed it up. Both of the poltical partys suck, the US needs a new revoulation.
I recently volunteered to give the H1N1 and it is astounding how many people have asthma, are diabetic, along with peanut and egg allergies. I think our "society" is in big trouble and we have not even seen the tip of iceberg! Why bother worrying about being destroyed by enemies on the outside when we are doing it from within - on our own.
2005 - Why Most Published Research Findings Are False 2012 - Effectiveness and harms of seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccines in children, adults and elderly: a critical review and re-analysis of 15 meta-analyses Answer the question - Do you agree with his conclusion about safety and efficacy? If not, how are YOU more qualified than prof. Loannidis?
thanks for posting something informational. Have heard other stories about Cleveland Clinic people trying to help people by trying to practice honest medicine. That part of Cleveland isn't the nicest, either. There's such big money involved, not to mention the possible criminal liability that coming clean in the health industry is probably very scary
I know people will say that you can live alternatively and healthy, but there is no cheap vegan fast food alternative, there is no health care for the poor and there is simply no alternative. Living in this country is a threat to your own health and... you don't have a choice.
completely agree but can someone tell me what he means when he said spinach kills you? just wanna know. is it coz there was an e.coli outbreak at the time?
I agree, healthcare reform needs to be in our hands if we want it done right. We know what's wrong, we can fix it, we just need to do somethng about it.
@GaryNull it sickens me to see that people wont leave there comfort zone to help change this corrupt world, "if you live your life without any effort or suffering it will mean nothing to you"
Agreed. I don't know the exact number but it's something like 80% (probably more) of kids over 5 are on some kind of ADD or ADHD medication. I am one of them. ADD used to be called boredom. When a kid got bad grade, the best medication was a foot in the ass from dad and a tongue lashing from mom. And that usually worked pretty well. If a kid is bored in class, then the parents need to help school him/her at home or hire a tutor. Pills are just unatural.
That the consensus among nutritionists, naturopaths & many doctors is that we should eat 5-6 meals a day doesn't mean that is what most of us do Our society's stucture from work to school to week-end living is built around 3 meals a day and the vast majority of adults & children eat this way Why diabetes is increasing is not related to the thought that we should eat 5-6 meals per day Until we do independent clinical research into rising diabetes, we simply won't know the cause
I love this man! Buy 1 lb of organic spinach at Costco for under 4 bucks and put 2 handfuls in a blender with a banana or 2, a nickel-size slice of ginger, a dash of stevia, and water and get your smoothie on!!!
The funniest interviewer on television. One of the funniest people ever. Clever by far than any late night host, ever. Curious how he can not be hired by NBC, CBS, ABS to do what Johnny Carson (great comedian but definitely of the very common) did and be accepted mainstream. Oh, I guess commercial is not in Bill’s sites.
Brilliant. Says it like it is. People really need to listen to this because it's the truth.
Francescka Bronte sure is the truth those who haven't done there research believe otherwise check out vaxxed the movie
and now he is a old idiot sucking up !!!
@@nanajodes8154 , vaxxed isn't based on research. It's based on conspiracy theories for stupid people.
Watching this in 2023 .. 15 years later…and sadly it’s only WORSE
"Doctors pour drugs of which they know little, to cure diseases which
they know less, into human beings of whom they know nothing.” - Voltaire
Pharmaceutical companies genuinely help people, I'm sure you've taken pharmaceuticals at some point in your life
Bill Maher !! Always way ahead of his times in his thinking.
The reason more and more people are being diagnosed with mental illness is because there's been more awareness and attention and less stigma toward mental illness.
+DarkEnergy7 Everyone is mentally ill. And I mean everyone. Just try to live with it and have fun.
That and because the American healthcare system is broken, which drives people crazy.
Flat Henry you are correct! When they rich realized they could make money from illness, they helped create it!
This guy speaks the truth!!
We are making ourselves sick by what we're feeding our bodies!
"Just pot, sadly." 1:01
HAHAHA awesome!
messages like this need to be pumped into our tv sets during commercials... not all these drug commercials with which we're constantly bombarded.
He's right about the depression fact. I was suffering from depression and would feel physical pain when I hit a low. I started exercising and it went away. Endorphins are one hell of a drug.
Bill is the man!
Spot on bout big pharma.
The comments prove people are indeed slaves to pills.
Right on Bill!!! Keep the truth coming man!!!
People don't even know how true this is, and worst is, some mindless corporate boffins keep spouting this bullshit that it's complicated, nah, it's simple, this is no accident.
Great video!!
Bill is so right . I guess the reason he can afford to be so honest, is that he doesn't have an owner. I really like that about him.
I made a speech regarding pharmaceuticals. I agree so mich
"Ask your doctor if getting off your ass is right for you"-- Freakin' **epic**
Respect.
I'm a Theist, in this case I agree with him about Big Pharma. I'm studying to be a Traditional Naturopathic Dr.
thank you bill, for also bagtalizing autism and adhd. you just helped discrimate against a whole group off people who have been puit down and let down their entire life, just for being different than (nearly) everyone else.
I was once told to take a med for a disease that I 'might have' developed! The liver problem was just one of many side effects
So true...
"...so ask your doctor if getting off your ass is good for you."
Gold.
Spinach is good!!
Thank you!
I've been saying this for years!

I love how I just finished eating some spinach in the last minute of this video
This clip was featured in the beginning of a documentary titled "forks over knives" great film
"We wont stop being sick until we stop making ourselves sick."
[thoughtful pause, cocked eyebrow....
audience looks around at each other..."uh...yeah! Right on Bill! Exactly! He is SO smart!]
The clue's are in the comercials on TV.
One is selling a new drug , and the next is a lawyer looking for people to sue for old drugs.
LOLOL!!!! OK...why isn't this apart of our daily conversation?
This is great phelld! thanks TerryOlinger!

One of my favorite rants.

Has congress ever called up the AMA to grill them on anything?
After being prescribed medications that caused more illness than ever, then working closely with persons diagnosed with illnesses such as schizophrenia, I question if they were/ are, not more attuned than the average "normal" persons.
Working in the healthcare field I can share your very humorous side of a very very serious situation in this country.
He's right about exercise and depression. I've noticed it in my own habits. Also I read that the physical cause of depression is a lack of neuron activity in the brain. It was in an article that proposed magnetism as a possible way of stimulating regions of the brain to start firing. correction, wasn't prescribed haomoglobulin, it was gammaglobulin. five years ago now, bit scratchy on the details.
They need to legalise "Hemp Oil". There are so many medicinal purposes being ignored because no money is to be made from it. You can't patent a plant!
My doctor told me that pharmaceutical drugs are so expensive for the general public to buy because it costs exactly 1 billion dollors just to get ONE new drug passed through the FDA. 1 BILLION dollars? And are most of these drugs even necessary?
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
The one true thing here, that you can't dispute, is that, "diet and exercise don't fail".
You see this is why in the UK, the National institute for clinical excellence (NICE) was a good thing, they were a more impartial board who decided whether a drug was actually statistically significant and decided whether to invest money in it. Well said.
I see two psychiatrist one for my 6 year old daughter who has an anxiety disorder and ADHD. Devious algorithm recommendation
Zoloft doesn't treat sadness...it treats a mental illness called clinical depression.
this must be the greatest speech ever
you have a lot of very good information. is there a website where one can find the stories grouped?
I usually don't agree with Bill on a lot of issues, but I'm with him on this one.
@Stuartsaves
he said "we won't stop being sick untill we stop making ourselves sick"
It's the point of the entire rant really. Too many people drink, smoke, get fat, use drugs... He's urging people to start looking after their own bodies with that line.
I love it when Bill says something obvious and people say 'Wow... i never realised that'. If I was an American i would definately vote for Bill.
The 96 people who hit the dislike button -54 were laughing so hard they hit the wrong button, 23 didn't like seeing someone think for themselves, and the 19 others because Bill does not believe there is an invisible man in the sky.
I got up and walked over to my tv. Whats the first thing I see and hear? "Lovaza isn't for anyone..."
Love the guy going "Mmm...yeah! Mmmhmm...mmmm."
While I don't always agree with Maher's opinions on other topics, I believe he hits the mark with this video on the current state of health in the USA.
bill maher isnt afraid to say how it is. i respect american tv for having his show on. thats the only reason to respect it
This Man is brilliant!!!
Thats right.
Research that has been done and will continue, in order to monitor any potential increase in severe side effects (etc).
i've never seen a conservative wipe the floor with anybody, especially a non-conservative.
A large amount of the money spent is used to further research into cures, prevention, and early detection, such as delivery methods that only affect the cancer cells and none of the surrounding biomass.
It is WRITTEN that money is the root of all evil and it's also written that sunlight cures depression.

Pot doesn't kill you, it just hurts your life.
"Just pot sadly".... nice line lol

Why did you post a study comparing organic and inorganic mercury?
I'm curious.

This isnt the pharmacology companies, they are just doing supply and demand, people would rather take anti-depressants then exercise.
My university professor explained to us last week yet again how vitamin pills are actually bad for you. Veggies ftw.
I love this man! Buy 1 lb of organic spinach at Costco for under 4 bucks and put 2 handfuls in a blender with a banana or 2, a nickel-size slice of ginger, a dash of stevia, and water and get your smoothie on!!!
