오늘 그려주신 초상화 주인공의 모습을 보면서 2년 전, 5년간 앓던 췌장암으로 세상을 떠난 제 아내의 영정사진을 준비하지 못해 애가 탔던 시간을 떠올려 보았습니다. 살면서 처의 죽음을 예견하지 못하고 살아왔던 터라 영정 사진을 미리 찍어두지 못했고 아직은 살아 있는 사람에게 "영정사진"을 찍자고 차마 말하지도 못하여 젊은 날 찍어두었던 사진을 하나 확대해서 써야만 했었습니다. 오늘 댓글을 달아 주신 외국인 한 분도 이렇게 멋진 초상화를 당대 최고의 초상화가로 느껴지는 분이 친구의 초상화를 하나 그려주셨으면 하는 제안을 하신 것 같네요. 미술부님의 채널을 응원하시는 분들의 사연과 함께 보내주시는 사진 속에서 소재를 얻으신다면 그것도 뜻이 있을 것 같고 그 행운을 얻으신 분들은 로또 복권에 당첨된 것과도 같은 행복을 얻을 수도 있지 않을까 하는 생각이 드네요. 방금 결혼하여 행복에 겨워하는 한 쌍의 부부, 세상에 태어난 지 일 년 되는 아가야의 티 없는 웃음, . . . . 이런 우리 삶의 단편들이 아름다운 그림 소재가 될 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들어서 제 생각을 두서없이 적어 보았습니다. 늘 좋은 그림으로 우리에게 감상하는 행복함을 선사해주셔서 감사합니다.
Other people may laugh at me, but when I draw a portrait, I think about the memories I have with that person and try to draw the time that person lived rather than trying to draw the person's face. Thank you so much for understanding my thoughts.

He uses watercolor papers. He doesn't stick to a name brand, but he does prefer professional watercolor papers, not student grade.
All Korea watercolor painters are master level??

May I ask do you use white gouache on the hair/beard? It's so realistic.
He doesn't use masking fluid or white paint; he leaves a white margin or wipes the paint off with a brush if necessary.
