    I've poured a lot of time in Final Bar Line and you know what? I love every damn second of it. I bought all of the DLC and I'm not ashamed to admit it because Im playing the hell out of it whenever I need a stress relief. It's the perfect comfort game for me and it's a 10/10 in my book.

    To answer the question about where to find them in the US, Theatrhythm is an exclusively Japanese game (like most arcade rhythm games), but it can be found at the Round 1 locations in America. Round 1 is a Japanese arcade chain that, years ago, started expanding to American locations and now most states have one. Round 1 being based in Japan is important because they have the network functionality contracts for all their games, like Theatrhythm, so you can play them on the servers like you would in Japan and log your scores/grind points/get unlocks via network systems like NESiCA or Eamuse.
    You can also find them in the wild, because rhythm/arcade people will just buy up cabs, but these shouldn't have server connectivity because those contracts are only for Round 1 in America (you may find some in the wild or at cons that still have network functionality, but thats a whole 'nother rabbit hole).

    I adore this game. Poured 200 hours into this on release and picked up the Nier, Mana and Chrono packs. Such a fun time. Versus mode against friends is also worth trying!

    The main thing with Square-Enix Music is that many of it is not 100% owned by Square. There are even times when more than 2 parties are involved.
    Which is why most sang song were part of a more expensive pack because Square had to pay the proper entities for using their songs (Hollow, Why, Eyes on me, etc)
    Sorry... I know I can get annoying at times.

    38:19 Why do you keep complaining about Bravely Default being in this game... And not Octopath Traveller? Bias too much?
    I love the Bravely Default tracks in these games in Curtain Call and in this one, and they are pretty much "That of the Name", "The Evil wings" and "The Serpent That Devours The Ground" being basically the best.

    • @TomLazan
      @TomLazan  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Octopath could’ve been used in that example too, I just picked Bravely Default. The point isn’t that I dislike those games, the point is that this is still a Final Fantasy game and I would prefer if they included more of the iconic missing songs rather than some from completely different series.

    its kinda funny to realize the endgoal of most rhythm games is being live service to constantly add new songs instead of releasing an entire new game every few years

    I bought this game around its release window and this alongside DFFOO became my most played games of the year. I sunk about 200 hours total into this one and it was honestly the most fun I had that year. I still had the my nitpicks and like what you said, I don't think this is a definitive end all be all to the series and I still think there are some songs to add. I can only guess as to why they skipped out on a lot and it's probably cuz (aside from other licensing stuff) of how dull some of the charting could possibly be. An example for me was Challenge from FFX, it's one of my favorite tracks, but the charting is pretty underwhelming and it's probably due to how the song doesn't do that much even if I still think it's pretty good. And also, I would've hoped that for DLC packs, they could've expanded on the existing game's music selection instead of just dumping a lot of extra Square tracks. Like they're cool, but no ORIGINAL VERSION of God In Fire from DFF012 or Unseen Abyss? Pretty disappointing especially since as you mentioned, there are a lot of repeats and it gets kind of annoying. Also something that bugged me specifically was One-Winged Angel (the original one) was cut down in length. Why! In TCC, it was full length, so I'm not sure what the deal was there, I wasn't too big on how short some songs were, and I don't excuses about lengths when Advent OWA is 6 minutes long, it would've been cooler if some tracks were longer, especially the vocal ones.
    Overall tho, for the $80 I payed (I got the digital deluxe edition), I think for how much I played it, it was well worth it for me. I have my nitpicks and such, but I still think this game is worth picking up.
    Also, I quite literally had no idea this game had a physical release until this video lmao, I heavily agreed with what you were talking about near the end about how annoying it is to just buy a game these days with all these editions and stuff. Great review man!

    So, I was a semi-professional musician for over a decade. I sold over 1,000 albums as an indie artist, toured as a hired gun bassist, was a member of an orchestra and even composed a score for a feature film. I'm also not a hater of live service games.
    I have zero interest in a live service rhythm game and would not pay for it.
    I've never liked rhythm or music games, probably because I'm always thinking to myself, "You know, I could just be actually making music now."
    I'm also more into narrative driven games and don't really play games as much for gameplay, so if there's not a story, I tend not to care. They are some exceptions (I enjoy platformers, fighting games and racing games), but in general, there's not much appeal to me in a game like this because if I want to listen to the music from these games, I can just pull them up on streaming.

    While I hate the idea of it being a subscription, I think it would be a good idea if it were a free to play game with tons of paid song packs that get registered to your SE account so you could crossbuy them. Basically once they inevitably need to release a new one on PS6/Switch 2 it would just be the same game again and all your old songs you bought carry over.
    Ofc. this sadly isn't possible because of Sony's and Nintendo's store policies. (And if microsoft gets a version their store policies are even more stupid so any sort of crossbuy would be completely impossible)
    This "songpack" model is also how most rhythm games work in general.

  • @tropichawk850
    @tropichawk850 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I want to start off by saying this does sound like a solid game. To answer your question, though, I personally wouldn't pay a subscription for this, but that's because A) Missible stuff based on irl time in games actually turns me away from playing them, and B) Unless I'm practically having heart palpitations for something I don’t really engage with subscriptions. I don't like the whole potentially endless money sink aspect of it, and cancelling a subscription early to avoid that would loop me back around to Issue A.
    That said, if I were to look at it from a more general perspective, I like your baseline of $1 or less for each song. And if each month is giving out only a couple songs, both of which are missible, that still only sounds like $1 a month territory to me. But, you know, greed and all, so... $3 a month, maybe? $5 is definitely still too high in my eyes. Maybe if there was a regular $3 subscription the way you described it, but with a small handful of songs being released each month, and then a super digital ultra special mega final deluxe $5 subscription that ensures you automatically acquire the songs each month by just playing any of them once.
    Either way, my point is that I think your idea could work. I guess I'm just personally too stingy with my money for how pricey that sounds. Oh well. This was another really enjoyable review. I'm excited for your upcoming reviews of Endwalker, XVI, and everything in-between! Thanks again for all your time and effort!

    • @TomLazan
      @TomLazan  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I didn’t put a solid number on it but in my head I was thinking $5 for a handful, like maybe 7 or 8 songs. Only assuming dev time for 1 song isn’t very long, but maybe I’m wrong

      Oh, okay. I might just need to listen better cause that sounds more reasonable. And I can't imagine the dev time per song is super long either, so it makes sense to me.

    I litterally never noticed that Final Fantasy isn't in the title. But considering that there is a Theatrhythm Dragon Quest and Final Bar Line is NOT A WORTY finale. Sometime in the future there should be a Theatrhythm Square Enix.
    Keeping it to FF for a second they have songs from Advent Children and Last Order so non video games are okay...why are there no songs from The Sprits Within, Legend of the Crystals,Unlimited,Father of Light or Kingsglaive? Nothing from FF Dimensions,Rings of Fate or Echoes of Time?
    Chocobo is a whole subseries and nothing from ANY of them? Or Tactics Advance 1 and 2. What about Revenant Wings? They have Four Heroes of Light so you can't blame the DS soundchip for it being snubbed.
    Final Bar Line has 0 Dragon Quest music so it's already an incomplete Theatrhythm if they're willing to take the name Final Fantasy out of the game and add in non Final Fantasy music.
    As far as the non Final Fantasy games that weren't included is everything from the Enix side,Square Enix bought Quest in 2003 and there no Ogre Battle music,no Front Mission, Parasite Eve, Bushido Blade,The Bouncer etc

    You're actually incorrect on the RPG meta game, while you can level grind to kill things easier as in most RPGs, the meta game in this, also like in most RPGs, allows you to maximize the efficiency in the party that you build. Only trash gamers feel that leveling grinding is the only way to beat games, they received a rude awakening when Tactics Ogre Reborn added level caps throughout the game, sadly the game didn't sell well despite being a masterpiece.
    While yes, attacks that trigger when a boss appears are going to be effective on bosses, you need to get up to those bossess. For example a character like Noctis has first strike, and also Armiger, dealing damage against every battle up to the boss, sometimes requiring you to even pass through multiple bosses to get to the one you need to defeat. Noctis and others with first strike are actually better to use in FMS battles as well, because attacks that would have triggered while you're not in combat are skipped and you don't gain the damage those attacks would have made. It means that characters like Zack who's meteor shots triggers at the start of the second battle or Benjamin whose attack triggers after four enemies are defeated, are great to have on your party for damage dealing characters on FMS battles, Zack is a good choice against bosses as well.
    Against bosses you need to defeat with ice magic it should be a bit self explanatory, make a build of magic users or even physical attack characters with elemental attacks like blizard blade. It's not really random when you make the build specifically for the quest.
    I found more enjoyment of swapping my characters out after they gained their unique attack, I kept gaining more and more characters that I skimmed through their skills to build teams and explore more of this really enjoyable meta game. I actually enjoy the meta game far more than the game itself, because while it helps playing to the music, you can just as easily look at the notes as they pass by and play them without ever even playing to the music itself.
    That's the reason the five different teams are there. Team five I had a build specifically for evasion, tank, status recovery for the stages you needed to pass without taking any damage. I had a team of thieves that had steal, mug, and Zidane with increased chance of item drops. I had my main go to attack team.
    The meta game made the RPG mechanics actually matter. It almost felt like that same experience you'd get from making your party builds on Dissidia Opera Omnia, except well, you didn't really have any control beyond the preset mechanics that would happen at a given point. Like the gambit system in Final Fantasy 12 if you weren't to take control of the game yourself after that.
