The song is about a desperate cry, a last ditch attempt at reaching out to some form of human connection (from someone on the other side of the wall). The whole theme of The Wall is about excruciating loneliness, isolation and mental illness, which comes to a crescendo in "Hey You" "Comfortably Numb" and "One of my turns". Hey You is also about Waters' first divorce, at a personal level...

Even though the band was in such a tense state during the recording sessions of the wall they still managed to create one of the best selling albums of all time. I recommend listening to the whole record to fully understand the concept. The Wall is metaphorical, It refers to a barrier that you build around yourself during the course of your life and each brick in the wall represents a different event, thing or person.

I agree and submit the same suggestion with: Dark Side of the Moon album. Start to finish- great and MEANT to be listened-to straight thru in one piece.(As all their works are). However, YES, you most certainly CAN listen to each individual “song” separately and still enjoy - that’s how most people have enjoyed Floyd on a large scale.

I've followed Pink Floyd for around fifty years now and, as a young student, had the great, good fortune to see and experience the 'Dark Side of the Moon' tour in Liverpool, UK. It was incredible and like all their work epitomizes how their unique sounds, instrumentation, production, imagination and presentation developed through all their experimentation, self- belief and albums (as you both noted). Thanks again guys.

Pink Floyd was formed in 1965... their (most likely) last album was "The Endless River" in 2014. PF had 15 studio albums... 3 live albums, 9 compilation albums not to mention multiple live dvds and solo albums performed by below members of the band.
Syd Barrett (short-lived founder; guitar plus) the originator and quirky eccentric; inevitably the consequential muse. * January 6, 1946 (rip 2006)
Roger Waters (bass) was the cultivator (seed sower), the lyrically conceptual prodigy, secondary vocal and co-maestro of songwriting * September 6, 1943 (age 78 years)
David Gilmour (guitar) was the placidity, guitar virtuoso, the silky smooth voice and co-maestro; the equilibrium. * March 6, 1946 (age 75 years)
Richard Wright (keyboards) was the essential underlying symmetry; musical nurturer. Occasional singer. * July 28, 1943 (rip 2008)
Nick Mason (drums) was the heartbeat, structure and foundation; the sole member involved from the emergence of PF to the last recording. * January 27, 1944 (age 77 years)
FYI: The following Pink Floyd albums are Concept Albums (all songs together tell a complete story)... Dark Side Of The Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979); The Final Cut (1983) is a maybe, as it was the last album with Roger Waters being in the band. *search on Wiki the album title to get the story behind the concept.

The part about “The worms ate into his brain”. I interpret as the walls built up over time & became so high, the heart & soul of the person starts dying ( how else do worms eat ate into his brain”, death of some sort. It’s about being physically alive but dead inside. if you can’t reach anyone, have no one to help carry the weights of life, “the stone” becomes too heavy. So it’s sad & positive at the same time because their message is about hope. If you have that you can get through anything. The song lifts up, like uplifts you then. Remember listening to the whole album helps, as some of the lyrics are metaphorical, but the songs tie in together. The line, “ Don’t give in without a fight, and how David Gilmore emphasizes the word “Fight”. Like hey, no matter how high the wall gets built, break down that wall, don’t give up without a fight. Live life happy. This album got me through a difficult period of my life. It’s my “go to” album when I’m struggling”. But I love them anytime.
I just listened to your reaction video of their song “Mother” first, hit the like button, went to your channel, started to play this video of “Hey You”, had to stop, hit the like button and subscribed right away. Absolutely loved it. I can’t wait to check out more of your videos!

You are doomed to repeat mistakes made by others before you if they don't teach you the mistakes that they made.

Since you’re into melodic progressive rock, I suggest listening to Genesis Carpet Crawlers if you haven’t already. Make sure it’s the 1974 version with Peter Gabriel in the lead. You will be confused by the lyrics in the beginning, but by the end, you will be so fully immersed in the song that it won’t really matter. Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but early Genesis is high on my list as well for their level of musicianship.

btw, there's sorta a PULSE version of this song also :) it wasn't recorded at PULSE itself (which is the 1994 concert at Earls court, London) but it was recorded at one of the other venues of the same Division Bell tour - th-cam.com/video/Bxpo2_BC_gg/w-d-xo.html
The song itself does however feature on the PULSE album. The video above I believe was created using the song from the album and various different cameras from this live performance.

One of their best songs and sadly without Richard Wright as a member of the band. He got fired by Waters during the recording of this album, for having no inspiration because of going through a personal crisis and an ongoing battle for power within the band. And Waters wanted a full blown orchestra for this album.

I'm not sure where you got your info but according to the credits , Rick is playing the Fender Rhodes electric piano on this track ? Not trying to call you out just stating the facts ????
