I have the transparent top on mine. But I purchased a liner that attaches via suction cups made just for that roof. I remove liner in fall and winter and put it back up in spring and summer. It definatley keeps the heat out and looks like a regular top from inside.
I have an 07 Corvette with the Z51 package, it didn’t come with the clear top. However when I first got the car the painted top was making similar creaking noise like your clear top does. I did a little research and found that GM makes a special lubricant for weather striping. I applied it per the instructions. That was a few years ago, haven’t had an more squeaks.
I am tall so the transparent top gave me more head room and I really enjoyed the more specious feeling being able to see out like a sunroof. The squeaks were most likely just bushings and could be fixed. I ended up selling the car for a different project at the time before I could fix it but I really liked the top except the squeaking sounds.
There are online videos ofhow to adjust and lubricate the roof which will eliminate the noise. The polycarbonate, transparent roof on my 2010 C6, has an interior liner which has a number of small dots which eliminate the heating issue, don't add weight or reduce headroom. It also eliminates the blue tint on the interior.
I have both tops on mine. I am only 5'9" so I fit fine with either top. The transparent top is a bit noisier for sure. I use my colored top in nicer weather when I take it off more often. In early spring or late fall I use the clear top so I get more of an outdoor feel when it is a bit too cool to take the top off. I like have both tops.
@tyrellrivers339 Your probably fine. I’m sure not all of them do this. They are awesome though. I guess there are rubber gasket seals that can be replaced and other methods to fix the squeaking sound.
I actually made a pros and cons list of the transparent roof for my C5 corvette. I had similar pros and cons plus a few additional ones. However i have not had any creaking noises with mine which is weird that yours is so prominent! That would get extremely annoying!
I have the same annoying noises with my transparent targa top on my '13 grandsport. I don't have a painted targa top it didn't come with one when I bought it a month ago
The clear top comes with a felt like padded liner that and has suction cups that stick it to it and turns it basically like the paint one inside. It insulates and blocks the sun and adds noise dampening to interior. The guy you bought car from probably lost it. I have mine still.
So, I just bought an 08 Z51 3LT with the transparent top. My top makes no noise, but I'm wondering if there's a noticeable difference in _road_ noise between the 2? I'm looking for a black painted top.
With how hot the transmission tunnel gets in these cars, I just couldn't accept being cooked from the top and bottom at the same time so hard top when back on for the summer.
@@DieselLegiance They can be painted, but use an automotive grade paint, not rattle cans would probably be best to have it done by a professional, I clear coated my transparent top no problem.
@@DieselLegiance I'm not going to take credit for how I fixed mine but here's a video from a TH-camr, it's actually pretty easy and anyone could do it. He even tells you what size O-rings to get. th-cam.com/video/wGxmCyYOkdg/w-d-xo.html
Update. Ive noticed alot of people have had their clear tops cracking or breaking. Im not sure if tightening the screws and latches attribute to that. Me personally i havent done anything to deal with the creeking noises. I honestly dont even notice them anymore because i dont pay attention to the noises. I consider it normal since the top does come off. Its almost like a personality for the corvette. I imagine doing things to try to prevent the noise adds more stress to the targa top and increases the chances of breaking , shatter or the paint being distorted from stress. Id say leave it be or take it to a dealer and let them handle it so that way there is a warranty on their fix for it. They break it they fix it.
Hi Matt 🤗 I have a question that I hope you can help me with. I was storing my transparent targa top in the back of my 2005 C6 and the hook on the passenger side roof panel receiver cover snapped off. I’m new to my C6 so I was wondering if you could help me find the right part number? I’ve tried looking up the part but I can only find the passenger side roof panel receiver cover without the hook. Help?
I don’t recall it being heavier. It may actually be a little lighter. You do gain a little head room too. They are just a little noisy and get hot on sunny days.
The transparent roof is slightly lighter compared to painted one. Also a negative to the transparent is that its fragile, so don't pull on it when getting in or out the car. It might crack
I have a Laguna blue 2014 c7 Z51 with the transparent roof , no noise and I love the color due to it matching my car. Chevy must have fixed the issued in the c7 model I'm guessing.
This guy owns a corvette and doesnt know about the SIMPLE fix to his "heat" complaint? Its called the suction cup cover that shields you from the sun! Good grief, I'd say silly complaints. No wonder he sold it.
No, I just get bored with vehicles and as I buy them, I fix them up, sell them, and move on to a new project. I also don’t like the “suction cup” cover as the main reason I liked the transparent top was more headroom which I’d lose with a cover. My complaint was more about the creaking noise. But it’s all good, appreciate your thoughtful comment 👍🏼
@DieselLegiance Well, the thing is, I have a 2011 Grand sport, and I have the suction cup setup to keep from getting hot and protect the interior from the sun. I too am 6'3/265, so I can say with certainty that the protector didn't decrease headroom for me. Did you ever try the cover? Also, utilizing rubber washers from the hardware store takes care of that cracking and other noises with the top. Just fyi.

Nice…if I get a corvette again I’ll have to consider that.
where did u get it from

Awesome! What is the name of the special lubricant?
You can put rubber washers like you use on sink on the two front prongs and it will stop
Good to know! Did you lubricate the rubber as well?
Thank you for this video. I have an opportunity to pick one up for my car and was trying to decide whether to add the transparent top!

You can lube latches and tighten the screws to stop the targa top noise
I have a 2020 Z51 with a transparent roof and mine doesn't make any noise. I love my see through top.
Maybe they improved it for the newer models. Mine is noisy lol. I still love it though.
I have a c7 and was thinking about getting one 😅 idk now tho

I almost always take the roof off. Florida life.....

I have `06 C6 with Z51. Works for me.
My transparent top has developed spider webs all over it due to summer heat in Texas.

My c6 has one and I want a solid one. Can you paint it?
It’s possible but probably better off selling it and buying a solid top.
@@DieselLegiance They can be painted, but use an automotive grade paint, not rattle cans would probably be best to have it done by a professional, I clear coated my transparent top no problem.
I have both Targa Tops and they do not have the rattling noise you have, maybe the O-Rings on pins on the Transparent Top needs to be replaced.
Thanks, I need to take them to the dealer to look at. Maybe it’s just an issue with mine?

@@DieselLegiance The O-rings size is #31 x 4 for the Front and Back pins and #5 x 2 additional for the pins in the front teal cheap fix.
Thanks 🙏
The crackling you just need to grease your seals and contacs points. That goes away.
I like the strobing dash lights! I want that for my Vette!
That's just a side effect of the camera they don't flicker in person

if you can vinyl wrap a top you can sure tint one.
I’m just going by what 3 tint shops near me told me. Maybe the vinyl sticks better than tint.
@@DieselLegiance I DIY a forehead tint bar on a motorcycle visor before I got a helmet with a flip down tint one.

is the clear roof heavier?

I sold the car already but it’s all good. I’m customizing a 2023 F350 Longbed Diesel now. Eventually, someday, I’d like to get another sports car.
Are all corvette owners assholes like you?
