This seems more like the number of ways to form the binary tree's than parenthesis. The reason is that why not have a triplet? That is, there seems to be an inherent use of the idea of having a binary operator(concatenation?) being used.
Yes there is an inherent assumption that the operation is binary. I think when you see a concatenation operator it is natural to assume it is binary.
