    👇 ABOUT ME:
    Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
    When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
    I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my TH-cam channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, TH-cam channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
    It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

    Been doing this for years, not going to lie, it's pretty awesome. If you're young and single, I highly recommend being a cruise ship musician.

      Why single? Lots of husbands and fathers have jobs way more complicated than being on a cruise. Also river cruises are way shorter which is amazing for people who are not single

      If you're in the showband, better get the reading chops up, because it's mostly sight reading.
      You'll usually have one rehearsal and then one or two shows. You need to be able to play through the charts coherently in the rehearsal, and polish or memorize difficult parts before the first show. The music can be literally anything, so make sure you're well versed in styles as well.
      Lounge and dance bands are not so reading-heavy and play more consistent repertoire.

  • @mikkovaltonen3564

    If you wanna be a working musician (touring, studio, theatre, TV etc.), regardless of your instrument, the show band gig is a great stepping stone.
    Constant sight reading, all kinds of music, guest entertainers, production shows, and you get very comfortable playing to a click.
    Also, you'll have to expand your repertoire a lot to get the gig. Bassists need to play electric and upright, sax players have to play other woodwinds too etc.

    • @brassholio
      @brassholio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% agree. My reading was good before I joined a ship showband, but it just went next level. It really sets you up for future gigs because you have to get good at everything.

      @@mikkovaltonen3564 I did contracts with Carnival and Princess. I went through Quality Overseas Music when I first started out. Lots of ship musicians do. It's up to you if you want an agent or want to try and get an audition without one.

      @@brassholio Our jazz professor got one of his students a gig with Royal through recommendation and said he could be able to work it out for me as well.

    Very helpful information! I'm an R&B guitarist that can play a variety of styles. But my sight reading skills aren't strong and I was interested in work with a Party Band that plays most current or Top 40 music. What would you suggest? All music that's played on the ships require sheet music?

    Exactly the information I was looking for when I typed cruise musician in google. I'm 17, play piano, guitar, bass, vocals, & I guess you could count flute, but I'd say bass is my main instrument despite playing piano for 10 years. I've played in a couple bands but mostly with friends in not many very formal settings. Would playing as a cruise musician be unrealistic? My music teacher told me about it & said I could be pretty good at it given my ability to pick up songs quickly as well as my sight reading & it sounds like something I'd really like to do but I kinda feel like I lack experience.

    Love the video. Really cool. . I have a question. Can you play blues, rock as a Solo Musician on a Cruise Ship? I’m a solo musician who plays with tracks and mostly the Tourists circuit (all the hits, classics etc) but I do one gig a week where I get to play blues & rock etc and it’s my favourite gig of the week (as they are my favourite genres) and I was wondering if that’s possible to do on a cruise ship? I haven’t been on a cruise ship so I don’t know if there would be a demand for that type of gig?

    Would you recommend doing this early in your music freelance career? I'm a saxophonist and I'm debating applying for a cruise.
    I'm young so I've not really "settled" in life and I'm not really planning to anytime soon.
    I've studied music performance and play lots of function gigs for weddings and agencies and have done for years, so I'm very comfortable with the playing side of things.

    If you didn't have a band put together would it be possible or very difficult to still be hired?

    • @DamianKeyes
      @DamianKeyes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Liberty,
      There are 2 ways to get work. Agencies want to recruit bands for these ships as they don't want any hassle however musicians leave these bands and there are a lot of them in the world. Your job if you don't have a band is to find a bunch of cruise ship band MD's which you can start researching on LinkedIn or other socials to make friends with.. Just make sure when you have found one and say hi that you have everything in order and can send whats needed to make the right impression.
      Hope this helps

    • @PablasMusica
      @PablasMusica 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there are positions where you don't need to read music at all. Solo Guitarist, Piano Bar, Guest Entertainer, and Party Band IF you bring the whole band from land AND you have memorized a HUGE repertoire. Anyway, it really doesn't hurt to learn to read music... just it case!

    • @ScottStar2023
      @ScottStar2023 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t read music either but chord charts I. Can read and is a must if you want to play with bands . Learn how to read chord charts it’s not as hard as reading music . Also it doesn’t hurt to take music theory class if you haven’t done so yet. 👍

    • @ScottStar2023
      @ScottStar2023 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re a solo alls you need to do is beable to have list of songs you know very well like pretty much memorized. I have over hundreds for me I have memorized .

    • @ScottStar2023

    • @DamianKeyes
      @DamianKeyes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jonat,
      Great question. There are specific agencies who specialise in cruise ships. Your best bet is to make a showreel of your playing and some socials and start getting in touch with musicians who are on cruises building relationships.
      Or put a band together and approach these agencies with a full band asking them what you would need to do to get a trial period on a cruise.
      There are a lot of musicians who do this and lots who stop every year so keep networking on LinkedIn, Instagram and FB 🙂🙂
