Harley-Davidson Sportster Fails in 2 Major Areas

  • Harley-Davidson Sportster as good as it is as a do it all machine has two major areas no amount of money can over come. The Harley-Davidson Sportster can do a lot of things but it's design really holds it back in key areas. Even with the best suspension money can buy you still have to deal with the short wheel base. The short wheel base attributes to a rougher ride, add in the smaller frame and riding two up is less than great for any distance. The Sportster engine is one of the best engines Harley-Davidson ever produced and it can make some big horsepower. The Sportster engine however does not make big torque like the big twin engines. Sportster engines can make torque, but the rpm range required and the amount of work needed makes the cost not worth the benefit for the street.

Glad you are back. The worst thing Harley ever did to the Sportster was that in 2004, they eliminated the transmission trapdoor. If you work on bikes and I still do, you can no longer pull the trapdoor door to fix the transmission. Now, you have to split the cases to do any kind of transmission repair. I mean, what the hell? I'm on my 11th Sportster, and I'm almost 70. It is a 1968 XLH 900. I rode this bike back and forth to work for 10 years. It shifts on the correct side and is still fun to ride out of all of my bikes. Edited for grammar

I had a sportster when I was young. I gave it to my sister when I switched to a Heritage Softail. I worked less on that Sportster than I did on the Heritage. The Sportster was very reliable and dependable. Both had Evo motors and were ridden about the same amount of miles. Although I performed maintenance at scheduled intervals, the Sportster always seemed to look fresher than the Heritage like it didn't really need an oil change but got one anyway. I've got no complaints about the Sportster. They're too reliable to complain much...

Both have evo in the name but not the same motor by any means. Big twin evo has a single cam, evolution has four cams, lots of major differences. That being said, I tried my best to kill my sportster and never could, thing was bulletproof with proper maintenance. I did suffer the dreaded clutch rivet spring plate grenade. But everyone gave me plenty of heads up.

I'm so glad you mentioned the idea that the Sportster Evo should have been scaled up for the bigger bikes. I've said that for years. As for the other shortcomings, I toured 23 States on a rubber-mounted 883. Some of those states were 2-up, some were pulling a trailer behind the Sportster, some were both. I'm not a big spender so I'll be happy to share what I did to accomplish this. First thing is I put on a pair I've used Road King shocks. That was Cheap and made an enormous difference, especially with a passenger. The next thing I did was put on a Mustang wide touring seat which I didn't mind the expense because I've had to change the seat on nearly every motorcycle I've owned. I changed the handlebars but they were also cheap and I did the work myself. The only thing that was a little bit of an expense and specific to make the Sportster comfortable were the forward controls. Even my trailer was cheap since it was a kit from Harbor Freight. As for the revs, I didn't mind that at all because I was fresh off of Japanese bikes at the time and it seemed completely natural to me. Since then I have bought a Dyna and I've had to dump way more money into that bike than the Sportster. The grass wasn't greener with the big twins for me. I'm ready to eventually go back to an EVO Sportster.
PS you can modify the backrest on a Sportster and move it back about 2 inches. That gives the passenger much more room and they're still completely on the seat.

I'm 6'3", and bought my AMF XLH Ironhead Sportster new back in 77 and still love it. Fitted a pair of Lester mag wheels, Continental Conti blitz tyres, progressive for spring and progressive rear shocks and it handles great. It came with a very comfy king and queen seat. I fitted a genuine Sportster rack, leather saddle bags, centre stand and a kickstart kit to augment my electric starter. With the new shocks it is much better if I take a pillion than original ones. I only use it for journeys up to 300 miles if I'm 2 up and use my 95 FLSTN Heritage for anything longer. Sorry for your loss sir!

Aussie rider here. I grew up on Triumphs. The old ones from the 60's and 70's. My first Harley was/is a 97 Sportster that I bought for less than half the price of one of the new Triumph Bonneville replicas. I bought it second hand, but it was in great shape with just over 40 thousand Kilometres on it (about 25 thousand miles) I've ridden it all over eastern Australia on some very long trips (600 miles in a day for three days straight) and it has never let me down. It was an 883 when I got it, but a few years in I decided to put a kit in it and after a lot of research, I went with the 1275 kit from Hammer Performance. I only put barrels and pistons in it, because of costs. Australia is an expensive place to ride. It already had a nice 2-1 exhaust system and I had swapped out the 27 tooth final drive gear for the 29 tooth one that came on the 1200's, to lower the revs at highway speeds. The bike got a ground up work over (all done ny myself) with new wheel bearings, steering head bearings, and anything in the engine and transmission that needed fixing. An upgraded oil pump and clutch, plus a wire-tuck which moved the ignition switch to underneath the battery box and the coil to between the cylinders on the LHS, plus good rear shocks and fork springs gave me a bike that has nearly twice the horsepower and bags more torque. It will cruise effortlessly in 5th gear at 70mph without any problems, uses LESS fuel, and because of the superior balance of the Carillo forged pistons from the Hammer kit, vibrates far less that any Sportster I've ever ridden. It likes to rev and will do the sporty stuff through the twisties very nicely. At 68 years old and after 52 years of riding, I'm not that interested in high speed shenanigans these days (and besides, the speeding fines here would make you eyes water!) so I have a bike that is just fine for what I want. I don't really have the time or money for much touring these days anyway and the prices of the bigger Harleys here are outrageous (secondhand prices are about the same as new bike prices in the USA) so paying $25k plus for a bike that I'm not going to be using as much as my Sporty, which only owes me a total of $12k, when the average price of a used one from the dealers here is more than that by a couple of grand, really isn't my deal. I have rear shocks that are an inch longer than stock and that gives me an advantage in the corners, while also giving me longer travel that takes better care of highway bumps. I don't see myself changing it for anything else any time soon. Lots of things that can be done (if you know how) to Sportys to improve the ride, have been done and the look on many guy's faces when I tell them I did the work myself is a bonus to having a bike that does what I want, when I want and doesn't have any nasty surprises. I know you stateside guys will be looking at the dollars in horror, but the brand new Sportsters back in 2009 when I got mine were upwards of $18,000 for a base model 1200, so I'm cool with what I've paid for mine. Just for interest's sake, a 2024 Road King Special is listed at; $42,495 and a Heritage Classic at $38,995 here in Oz at the moment.

    Excellent explanation.
I don't care about torque or horsepower.
In Central Pennsylvania I added a low to mid-range Feulin Reaper cam to an 883 Sportster years ago and that solved the problem of slowing down going up lengthy hills or having to get a runner race approaching a lengthy hill.
I've had 3 Sportsters over the years and went into each purchase knowing full well they're not comfortable to ride and are top heavy. I didn't care about that either.
I'm 66 yr old disabled veteran that waited 4 years for the rumored smaller version of the Pan America using the Revolution® Max 975T engine.
    It never came.
    So a month ago I got a good deal on a 2024 KLR 650.

I've had a lot of different bikes and clocked more than 500k miles, I know what I like. Sportsters are fast, carve winding roads nicely, easy to work on and look good doing it, 😁

Sorry to hear about your loss. We are going through the same situation. Very difficult year. Hang in there! I've owned several, from an ironhead to my beloved "48". Tons of fun in a small package! But my wife wouldn't get on the back. So I traded back up to the next best ride, my '17 Fat Bob! 🏁

Sorry for your loss, it's something you don't just get over and move on. Everyone deals with it in different ways depending on what family member. My son has a '96 Sportster 883 that he had a 1200 kit put in along with wheels, forward controls, etc and now can't sell it even for the money in upgrades.

Having owned about 10 different Harleys.,
I still like the pre EFI evo sportster the best !
AND the modifications they need do not break the bank for anyone.
    Here is what the need to be 2 up;
Start with a 2003 and down 1200 model
Next buy 3 degree rake cups
Next buy 3 inch fork extensions
Next extend swing arm 3 inches using 2 to make one longer one
Next move upper rear shock pivots back 3 inches
Next buy classic style tank from 2005 or 06.
Use 2 appropriate sized solo seats with springs

You are right 100 per cent. Wanted to do some touring and moto camping so I got a Softail. I wish I had kept the Sporty and would like to get another but they cost more than I am willing to spend. Used ones have gone up substantially in value. As you said the Evo Sportster engine is the best engine HD has ever built. I will withhold judgement on the new series of engines as I don't know much about them. I will stick with my two Moto Guzzis, the V7lll is just an Italian Sportster with exactly the same drawbacks.😊 I am keeping this one until I age out of riding.

Came from enduro background, first harley was a sportster & it's funny how riders claim you gotta ride with RPM's fully turning heck I felt like I was hurting the motor lugging it around 2 or even 3k on the rpm for a comparison I've rode single cylinder "thumpers" fully reved out to do ADV touring usually giving it all its got just to maintain posted speed limits so to jump on a sportster the vibration was not even a thing rubber mount or solid mount tried them both nor was the constant rev to maintain speed an issue- however the suspension on ALL sportsters was crap compared to even a 90's KLR (extreme budget bike)

Stop trying to make Big Twins out of them. there is always confusion as to what produces torque. It isn't stroke, it's cylinder fill. It's simply how much fuel and air you can put in the cylinder, and how efficient the combustion process is. Put in the simplest of terms, it's the twisting force at the crankshaft. It's very easy to make 90-100 hp reliably from a 1200. The Sportster is still the best value going if you don't mind being upside down in a bike. I have $7500 in an 88 -inch XL. Sandy Kosman cured the wheelbase issue for me. Gold Valve emulators are less than $500 and mid-level Ohlins shocks about a grand. The base 883 had a great bar and seat arrangement from the factory for a 5ft 10 -inch dude of avg build. Pretty tough to build a nine second big twin for that kind of money.

Wise words indeed. Bought my first Sporty in 1990, a 1973 model. It was in good condition and was mildly customised. Both my previous Harleys were 750 flatheads. The 73 ran well and the only problem I had with it was fitting a new armature in the generator and a Bosch regulator box. Fast forward to the mid 2000s, I bought a lovely 1994 1200 XLH, low miles and totally reliable. The last Sporty I bought was a 2002 XL1200R. It had a factory 1200 conversion, inc heads, and a two into one exhaust. Again it was immaculate and really ran well. Ideal for A and B roads in The UK. Will probably down size to a 1200R in the next couple of years as the old WideGlide is becoming a tad heavy. (never had a problem with the shocks, just put them on the highest settings)

Kidding aside my High School Machine Shop teacher said to me in '78....if you want to be cool ride a Norton,Triumph or Sporster.
Only rode one once and it felt like riding on a piece of plywood with wheels under it.
It does fill a niche for smaller riders and urban commuting and they are cool looking for sure.

I have a 2002 Sportster 1200C. I have replaced the 21 inch tube type wheel and tire with a 19 inch cast tubeless tire and wheel. A flat tire with tube type tires means a tow truck and who knows what else. About the only other non stock parts on it are much louder slip ons, a retuned carburetor, and a short H-D sissy bar. Suspension, seat, bars, grips, etc. are completely stock. Oh, I did add some extra chrome. Belt guard, oil tank, battery cover, and a few other little bits. I bought it for the look, sound, and feel. It rides just fine for me. It has plenty of power from the stock engine. I also have a mostly stock 1989 FXRS Low Rider. It still has the original suspension, seat, and bars. It also has aftermarket slip ons, and some extra chrome. It also has plenty of power for me. With Harleys it's not about power or handling. It's about the look, sound, and feel.
I tried carrying a passenger on a bike nearly 50 years ago. I never did it again, and never will. As far as I am concerned, motorcycles are one person vehicles.

Since 1987 I have almost always have had a Sportster along with whatever other bikes I was riding.
Since 87 til now five .
Number five is a 2007 1200 I found on a used truck lot for 2700 USD.
Stripped it down to a single seat flat track style bike for blasting around the back roads .
I love Sportys and will always have one.
There are tens of thousands out there used for sale for anywhere from 2500 to 4000 .
You can find them with relatively low mileage on them.
Mileage isnt too much of a concern if they were well maintained.
    Long live the Sportster.
