Nikon is apparently having a flash sale on this lens right now. Both B&H and Amazon have them for $200 off as of this post. It's still an expensive lens, but 8% off is nothing at which to sneeze. Mine is one the way. :-) Thanks again for this great video and all of your work, which I've been enjoying and learning from!
Great video, thanks! I’m around 40th at our local camera store’s waiting list for the 70-200S. Can’t wait. Glad your mom and aunt got out and are safe.
First, very thankful for the good news in the midst of the fires. Second, I'm so glad to see some 70-200s are shipping. Mine has been ordered since later January, and I am excited about getting it whenever it comes. Your review reinforced my thoughts about its quality and value. I have switched from D750 and D850 to a Z7 and two Z6's with one D750 body in reserve! I have not had one regret. Also, I am strongly considering selling my VR II 70-200. It has worked fine, but I think it is time. Thank you for all of the information you offer. I look forward to your videos.
Hudson, my wife and I have been following the news of the wildfire and the unrest in Portland from the safety of Yorkshire in the UK. We visited Oregon and spent a few days in Portland on vacation four years ago and loved every part of the State. We hope you all stay safe and that the fire stays away from your mum’s and aunt’s farms. On a photographic aside - I bought a Leofoto 324C tripod the other day, after seeing your video review of their tripods. I must say, it’s a really well made piece of kit, so thanks for bringing them to my attention.
So great to hear! Thanks for the kind note my friend. So far the fires seem to be turning away from my mother and aunts. Many were less fortunate sadly. :-(
I recently watched a different very popular youtuber photographer reviewing this lens...He had a very different take on the lcd display and program buttons. He seemed to be hating on them for the sake of hate. Nice to see a different and positive take on Nikon's amazing new lenses.
There are those who seem to have a financial interest in hating on the Z system. I'm not in the pocket of Nikon or any competitor, and I just love what they are doing. I've shot a lot of DSLRs and mirrorless from a lot of companies. The Z bodies and lenses are a dream to create images with. ;-) It's hard to beat these S lenses, the body's sensors, the system durability, design, feel and usability.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto I´m a photographer and reseller at my country and tried many systems too. Completely agree that the Z is the best system. Just watched a very known reviewer saying wonders about the RF 24-70 2,8 even with horrible chromatic aberrations. This tech war is getting nasty! Keep safe up there!
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Good to hear. I am a simple hobbyist but am moving to a full frame camera this year and have settled on the Z line. (I think) I am really excited to see the 14-24 2.8 that should be announced this week. All the best and stay safe this fire season!
@@SpaklesDr I'm honestly most bothered by the size. It really should be smaller considering the mount size. Most of their other lenses are light and small for the range and speed
Happy to hear that Turner, OR was never reached by the fire. Being here in Salem, many of our friends "had" cabins in the Gates, Mill City and Mehama areas of the Santiam fire. Most have lost their cabins. The most tragic to me is the entire loss of the town of Detroit and the boat docks. Hudson, I am glad that you and your family are safe from the fires. Tomorrow, we are buying personal hygiene products and food to take to the State Fair Grounds for the evacuees. A couple of our friends in South Salem, with barns and acreage have went out to the Fair Grounds and have offered their personal farms for the over flow of people and livestock. The community is coming together to help in any way we can. It is a strange year, to say the least.
Fantastic images! Beautiful family. Just want you to know the photography community have you and family in our prayers. Thanks for the review, double H.
Good day Hudson, as always a fantastic video, to date I have not pre-ordered this lens but will definitely order once it is available in Canada. I am glad to hear your Mom & Aunt are safe. Please know you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Best video I've seen about the 70-200 S so far - can't wait for my pre-order to arrive! Terrifying right now here in the Pacific Northwest, up until today the smoke and fires haven't been bad where I am in SW Washington, but that's changing and now areas near me are being evaluated. Hope you're mom's farm survives, I live on a small farm and can't imagine having to leave it and all my animals. Stay safe!
@@HudsonHenryPhoto I never thought I'd anticipate a change in the wind so much! I'm looking forward to seeing blue skies once again - or better yet, rain clouds!
Much respect for getting this vid out. I know your anxiety. I live in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales in Australia. Last season we had the Gospers megafire have embers fall within a few miles of my house. Stay safe and all the best.
Central California had those fires too. Destroyed communities and vacation areas. It’s almost June 2024 as I watch this and they’re still rebuilding in Shaver Lake, Dinkey Creek, Wishon and more. The Creek Fire of September 2020 burned 300,000 acres and wasn’t declared contained until December 24, 2020. The whole Central Valley had orange skies all day, falling ash and lots of coughing people. Basically, I can feel your family’s pain…. So, I shoot a Z8 and was considering the 70-180 because of price. Now I think I’ll wait and get the 70-200 when it fits my budget more easily. I’d love to take it to the coast of Oregon in June for a photo safari but I think I’ll have to make do with what I have - which involves changing lens periodically. Also considering the 28-400 but it’s out of stock and I’m still on the fence about it. I don’t like the f/8 from 200-400 on that lens. But you get what you pay for! Thanks for the awesome vids and office hours!
I have the old 80-200/f2.8 ED lens, and it is probably the sweetest glass I have. Now that I've taken the leap to the Z6 ii, this lens is calling my name....
Great video, always value your views. Those fires are scary stuff! I was in Van Isle 2018 when the fires were raging on the mainland. Our Grizzly trip by boat was really Smokey and the smell intense! Stay safe and best wishes from Yorkshire, UK.
Great video as always Hudson! Glad to hear that your family and loved ones are doing fine during this crazy year... like you said, hopefully, the next one will be better all around, fingers crossed. I'm also very happy to hear your thoughts on this long-awaited lens, step by step the Nikon Z lens selection is looking better and better. Keep up the good work and stay safe! Greetings from Scotland :)
Nice video. Considering this lens myself to replace what I consider a very good lens in the Sigma 70-200 sport. We also drove through the area from Sacramento back to Seattle during the fires. Blood red skies, lots of smoke in the car, crazy times that was.
It's more marginal if you have the FL-ED which is also great. If it's the VRii or earlier, then run to upgrade. :-) I've got links right here that help out if you shop B&H or Amazon: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks
Hey Hudson, Glad you were able to go get your mom and all is well. Was thinking about her but figured you would be on top of things as usual. We rented a U-Haul truck and it is sitting in my driveway, ready to load up if we have to hightail it out of here. Hopefully, I will be returning it without using it by Monday. Looks like things have slowed down. BE SAFE! and Thank You - Killer Lens!
Hi Hudson, great video. I'm on the west coast too, although in the LA area of CA. I hope things came out ok for your family and friends up there. I was a bit confused watching the part about the different versions of the Nikkor 70-200mm lenses. I currently have an AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens and am wondering if that was the version you indicated had problems with vignetting, focus breathing, etc. I'm about to move from a D810 to a Z7 ii and was thinking about replacing my current 70-200 with the new S version.
That's the one. Great lens till the big megapixel cameras exposed is weaknesses. It breathes like mad too. It drops from 200mm to about 118 when close focused. The S version is a huge and fabulous upgrade. Sharp, bright, close focusing and almost no focus breathing. :) I've got links at www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks thanks for considering them.
I just got it and very excited. What do you think of the 2x teleconverter? I'm considering it as it would keep my kit to three lenses tops. My max after laying out $$ on this one. Thanks.
congrats! the new S looks like a nice lens. still using my E-FL. I don't do video so maybe I'll keep it awhile longer. I'm hoping Tamron bring their 70-180 to the Z... if they don't then maybe I'll bite the bullet and pick up the S... I'd hate to give up my E-FL but I decided to go full mirrorless so... anyway, thanks for the vid and hope you and your family stay safe!
Thanks so much. There's nothing wrong with the FL ED. Especially if you don't need autofocus video. It's a slight incremental change for the better with some cool buttons and a nifty digital DOF scale, but you can get epic photos with the FL ED on the FTZ. It's not that much better imho.
I'm still waiting for the 500mm PF.... sigh...I may just wait for the Z 200-600mm that is on the road map. We were up in that neck of the woods a couple years ago and there were too many fires. That was a good year compared to this year. Dang! Good luck!
Love your videos. Thank you so much for the entertainment during these hard times. I have the Nikon 70-200 vr II lens it it really does breath. I've been doing some humming bird photos with it and would love to have a bit higher reproduction ratio out of it. Here in Marin Co. California we've been sucking smoke for over three weeks now. Totally horrible year, big heat waves, PG and E rolling black outs, Covid-19 and now these fires!
thanks for this video, nice you talk about the fl-ed @f 2.8; but what if you already own the 70-200 f 4 lens, is the s f2.8 a worthwile upgrade, for the $1500AUD that you pay for it?, or is it still worth sticking to the f4 ?
Never been a fan of the F4. It's just not very good in backlit situations which I love. The FL ED was arguably the best 70-200 on the planet till the S version was released. I had the 2.8 VRII, and when I shot about 10 images with a workshop student's FL ED in a South Carolina swamp a few years ago I handed it back and said... You just cost me a lot of money damn it. :) I think if you test the S version, it may cost you a lot of money. :)
No, all of the county sheriffs in Oregon and the FBI have been pleading for people to stop those false rumors. The response has been armed groups of locals refusing to evacuate and 911 dispatchers inundated with antifa and proudboy inquiries when they need to be directing evacuations. A good friend of mine who is a documentary film maker was chased yesterday by guys in a huge truck who threatened to shoot him while he was filming the fire and interviewing evacuees. He's a clean cut dude in a new blue Honda minivan. It's not safe to even go in there thanks to these rumors and it's endangering law enforcement who have to stay longer pleading with people to leave when level 3 hits. I've been tracking some of the fires that threaten old growth forests I've loved since a kid. Many were smoldering for weeks in the high country before the freak dry 70mph easterlies blew them into mass conflagrations. It's simply another extreme weather event that is being politically used to divide our poor country further via rumor mongering and disinformation. To be honest I smell foreign social media influence in all this. It just makes us more and more weak as we divide instead of coming together to solve our growing problems.
Great just randomly landing on your channel. I loved your chat. Also, helps reaffirms my desire to hold out for Z6s announcement before I jump on Lumix FF. (I'm a lifelong Nikon shooter, but I stopped upgrading at D700 and D5300). Glad you and your family are safe!
hmmmm, I adore the color out of my Z cameras. I felt Nikon really got it right there with the D850 and 500, and D5 and then upped the game more with the Z6 and 7. Different strokes for different folks perhaps.
Do you think it’s worth upgrading the 70-200 f4 F mount version? I normally do landscape and wildlife photos. The f mount version works great with the Z7.
It's amazing. It's optically significantly better, but much heavier and more expensive. I'm really excited for them to get a 70-200 F4 S lens on the roadmap. I'll bet that will be amazing like the 24-70 F4. You can't go wrong with these S Lenses.
I purchased the 24-70 2.8 s, 14-30 s, and the 50&85mm s lenses and all of them are fantastic. I kept my 200-500mm along with the 70-200f4 and I’m amazed how well they perform with the FTZ adapter. The 50mm z lens is the best performing lens I’ve ever shot with. The optics of that lens are equal to any lens ever produced imo.
Two days ago we had 70+ mph winds. A gust blew me off my feet, and a fiberglass porta potty sliding down the middle of the street was passing cars! I went home.
Just wanted to say there is very heavy vignetting at 200mm on the 200mm f/2.8 e fl vr on my d850 . And at close focus it’s maybe a 170mm eq at close focus . I have the Nikkor 80-200 afs-d f/2.8 and it’s an actual 200mm
Hey Hudson - hope your mom’s farm stays out of harm’s way. My wife’s sister lives in Newberg and can see the flames on Chehalem Mountain from her house. Her other sister is on level one notice down in Roseburg. Crazy times to be sure. Would like to see you throw the 70-200 on the Z50 just to see what you think about the quality of that reach. My lens has shipped - really looking forward to it! BTW, the Unleased remotes are back in stock @ B&H...
Hudson, it would be a good idea to put a "Z" in the title so people can find this video easier when looking for this lens. I only found this because I already knew about your channel.
Hello Hudson. I have a Z9 and was using a Tamron 20-200 2.8 G2. I loved the lems on my Z6 but now I took the plunge and purchased the Nikon Z 70-200 2.8. It will arrive in about 3 days. Do you think the matove Nikon native 70-200 will be a good purchase and do you think I will see the difference compared to my correct Tamron 70-200
Hey Hudson awesome video great insights. I currently own the z6 and looking to get the 70-200mm. The Z version f2.8 although I know would work seamlessly with the z6 is way out of my budget at around 3500$ Canadian. I have been looking into the 70-200mm f4 F mount since I also own the FTZ adapter. I have been seen it online as low as 900$ used which is a little more affordable for me right now. Do you think I am limiting myself by going with F mount lenses? Are there any drawbacks you believe I may encounter if I go with this lens on my z6? Thanks for the info
Juan, the FTZ works great. Just great. Is the 2.8 S a lot better, yes. But it doesnt' come cheap and that F lens will work just fine on the FTZ. I just don't notice much performance let down with my F-glass on FTZ.
Firstly it’s great the family is ok and we’re the farm livestock ok. secondly the z 70-200mm f2.8 lens seems to be better than latest F mount 70-200mm f2.8 version. I shoot at lot of action and sports events during low light & nighttime under floodlights like a Football, Soccer, Rugby. I found the Nikon z7 & z6 we’re not as fast compared to my Nikon D5 in tracking of athletes or players or vehicles. Did you find any difference between the F Mount Dslr and Mirrorless cameras under similar circumstances.
With each firmware the Z camera's get better with AF tracking, but Nikon's development seems firmly focused on AF-F mode. It's different than DSLRs with dynamic and Group area modes. I still think you're going to be hard pressed with the 6 and 7 to keep up with the D5 or D500 for sports. The buffer is shallower and the tracking misses more. It's gotten quite good now though in FW 3.1. If you use AF-F and let the camera decide where to focus for scenes where you are panning with the action, but then program the F2 button to activate and deactive a tracking square for the sort of more distant action that moves more in frame as you are more still, you'll get really good results, that's also the mode where face and eye detect kick in and make your job easy when people are the subject. It takes some practice and relearning. Sony's A9 can keep up with the D5 and maybe even best it. Remember this is Sony's fourth round of mirrorless bodies. To see Nikon get so close via firmware in it's first generation and with such better build quality is impressive. The days of optical AF dominance in the Nikon world are quite numbered I'd say. I have very high hopes for an eventual Z8 or 9 or whatever they call it when it comes.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thanks very much for your salient points was great to see a long time user of the z series cameras. For my role focusing speed plus robustness, buffer and handling are paramount in different climatic conditions which I find the mirrorless cameras lacking that sense of quality. Wait to see what Nikond next mirrorless cameras will be like.
Really helpful video. Possibly a stupid question but what is the impact of the Z7 and the extra megapixels vs what you'd get from the Z6 with this lens?
you get the same full frame image, just more enlargability with the denser pixels in good light. In poor light the clean high ISO output of the Z6 can start to compensate and actually overtake the Z7 at about 6400ISO in my usage. The 6 just makes less noise and therefore you can enlarge it's low light images without exacerbating noise. I used the Z7 to test this lens in good light because that high resolution lets you really look at how well the lens resolves details. This one is stellar. The old 70-200 VRII and before really weren't intended for 36+ megapixel sensors. The FL ED and this new S lens are made for 46+ :-)
So here's this lens, super great. Also, the world is on fire but we'll get to that later. (John skips ahead to moving mom off the farm...) Dude. So crazy. I was just at D lake last week sipping a cold one in my water wings.
Is it possible for you to elaborate on how you can use (on the 14-24 for example) the focal length display to calculate the Hyperfocal distance? I know you cover it roughly at the 4:22 mark but it's still not really clear to me.
It puts two little marks on the focus distance gage between which you have apparent focus (things appear to be in focus at the distances between those marks). Stop down and the added depth of field causes those marks to move wider apart. To hit hyperfocal at say F11, stop down to F11 and manually focus until the infinity mark on your focus distance gage is just inside the far mark. Now you're at hyperfocal distance for f11. Everything from infinity to as close as possible is going to appear to be in focus. In reality only one precice distance away from you is really focused, but narrower apertures and wider angles allow you to render images that look focused throughout using this technique.
Thank you so much for your videos. Just ordered the 70mm-200mm VR S lens and can't wait. My question is, what computer are you using? I have a Surface Pro and I am using Lightroom. I shot my daughter's wedding in raw but lightroom is not letting me bring the pictures in Plus I tried to bring them in as DNG. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Hope is a simple fix. I know there is a lot that can be said and potentially look into but I hope is a simple process. Thank you sir...
th-cam.com/video/vLd8Tft6vmY/w-d-xo.html I use both a Macbook Pro and the PC in that video. I wish I knew what was up, but you'll have to chat with Adobe on that one. I'm not a big fan of DNG. I really prefer the actual original raw format.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto i did reach out to adobe. The problem inhad was that, my antivirus expired and windows antivirus kicked in and change the setting on my computer saying that I didn't have access as the administrator. Wow, it was so simple to change but to save my life couldn't figure out the problem. Thank you for replying though. I like your videos how simple and well detailed they are. Thank you sir 🙏
you said Z50 in the video, can the 70-200 be put on a crop sensor (APSC) camera, and without it cropping in, or does the z50 cause the lens to lose apature, or increase focal length?, like a teleconvertor would?
No, people have a huge misconception about that. You can always put a fx lens on a dx camera. Think about what changes. It collects the same light, projects the exact same circular image... The dx just crops a smaller rectangle from it. When I slap my 500 and an FTZ on my Z50, it crops a rectangle from that projection that gives me the field of view of a 750 on full frame, making subjects look bigger than full frame without cropping in , but with the same 500mm attributes: aperture, depth of field and everything else. Nothing changes in the way the glass gathers light and projects it into the sensor box. In the dslr days I carried a D850/D500 and one set of fx lenses. Perfect combo. I can't wait for a bad ass D500 like Z camera...
You’re a localism Oregon guy! Awesome video! I’m down in Creswell. If you’re ever in Eugene and want to grab a beer and talk z gear shoot me a message.
Great video as always, i own the first version of this lens it great lens, this new lens look great al well, but i wonder if will effect the battery life of the camera? i understand this lens will work only with Z cameras, and i do not know about the reliability of it since it is got so many electronics features? what do you think..
Everything built for the Z system is incredibly rugged. I've had my Z7 inundated with salt water and rinsed it and kept shooting. A workshop student had his Z6 fall from a tall tripod into a rocky tide-pool. We rinsed it, unjammed the 24-70 F4's zoom ring and he kept shooting. This lens feels just as solid, maybe more so than the FL ED. I think the Z system is as rugged a mirrorless system as you will find. It's classic Nikon tough. I don't notice any extra battery drain. It's still got excellent battery life. No need to swap batteries shooting all day Kiteboarding action.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto thank you for your fast and informative reply, as long time Nikon shooter and an owner of both z6&7 i know the quality of these cameras body, i wish for you and your family to stay halthy and save.
Hudson, I'm trying to figure out why Nikon did not release a 70-400 lens, much more useful lens like the one I've used on my D2Xs for years, and much better for sports too. Why didn't they give us a 70-400?
The "holy trinity" has long been the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses. Now nikon has that for the Z's and it's arguably the best zoom trio yet made by any brand. I've never been a big fan of the 80-400 f mount largely due to its slow focusing and image quality compromises to get such range. This new 70-200 S is so good however, that I'm thinking it may be sharp enough for the new 2X teleconverter they released with it... Aside from that, looking down the roadmap I see S line 100-400 and 200-600s slotted for future release. I'll likely stick with my PF primes on the FTZ for thier speed, sharpness and size, but that ultra zoom is coming over the horizon for those who need it. :)
They sure are. They're the best, but they are dear. At least it isn't the Noct price. :-) I'd like to see them cheaper, but I think Sony set the stage with the GM line.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto It's true that they are surprisingly good, even for the not so expensive one. I enjoyed using the new 24-200 which I found very convenient for a light one lens travel kit. But for the time being, I'll keep the 70-200 F mount one. Best,
Smoke, on of the worst things to expose a Imaging Sensor to, as the stuff will weld itself on. Particularly bad for Mirrorless as the Sensor is constantly exposed, and a lot of Zoom Lenses are inhaling and exhaling constantly
Nice video!! Good to see everything is ok with fires!! Have any thoughts on picking up the D850 or better off with z7? I have many F lenses, is there a big difference in weight? With z adapter ? Thanks Adam
I really prefer the Z7. It's the viewfinder, viewfinder, veiwfinder. It is smaller and lighter with the FTZ. No doubt. I have links here: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks My only hesistation would be for the avid sports and wildlife action shooter. In that case the D500 and D5/6 are still a bit superior in mixed, close and far erratic motion tracking and buffer depth. For everything else, give me a Z camera every time. The 850 feels quite low tech and clunky in my hand now. It's still the best DSLR ever, but the Zs are really that good.
I can't since I haven't shot the 24-200 yet, but I feel really sure that the IQ of the 70-200 will be significantly better. I plan to test the 24-200 in the next few weeks and I'll certainly make some comparisons, but the two lenses are in very different leagues. The 24-200 makes compromises too be all things to the photographer without the option to carry a 24-70 and 70-200. I've always preferred a 70-200 2.8, a 50 1.8 and/or a 24-70 (these days the F4). That said, I hear great things about it and I'm excited to give it a try. :)
Hudson thanks for the great info, glad to hear that all is well, my wife and I decided we need to get out of South Florida and decided take a car trip down the Oregon Coast to photograph landscape and wildlife. We landed in Portland on Sunday and spent 1 1/2 days at Cannon Beach with planned stops in Newport, Florence and Brandon over the next 7 days. Then all hell erupted, the wildfires, dense smoke, day to night and Fiery orange sky. Never seen anything like it, as you can imagine we had to cut our trip short after 2 days and hightail it back to Fort Lauderdale, very disappointing but we are safe and out of the choking air. We will be replanning this trip and hope to meet you on the trail someday.
So sorry that happened Jim. :( let's just hope we have a much better 2021. I usually run Oregon coast workshops each year if the timing ever works. Glad you're in clean air. I'm jealous.
I started with the original 80-200 push/pull. Then upgraded to the 70-200 VR G. Are you saying I will enjoy spending more money again? LOL Sounds like I will notice a difference. BTW, we have had severe fires here in Colorado as well. The snow helped a bit. Be safe.
You too LeRoy. Jealous of that snow even if it wiped out my tomatoes and melons... I had the 70-210 push pull before the 80-200, 70-200 VR, 70-200VRII and then the FL ED. The biggest and best change of all was the FL ED from the VRII. Huge, huge improvement. This one is great, but so it's the FL ED. If you consider using my links when you upgrade it does help me out. :) www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks
I'm a Kirk ambassador because I think they make the best gear and are super nice people to boot. All my gear links are here: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks
Stay safe most important! I got mine 2 weeks ago And i have a problem with mine I shoot in afc or afs in dynamic oir single or eye af my image jumps after i push the shutter button So my focus box stays in the same spot but my image jumps up or down left or right 2mm i would say! On my z6 an also z7 so it has to do with the lens and stabilisation super annoying today for portrait shoot i focus on the eye push the button the image jumps now the nose is in the focus box I can not be the only one with the problem
Get on Nikon quickly. I was just thinking that I forgot to mention how much steadier mine feels shooting up close zoomed in handheld than even the FL ED. I sure haven't heard of this except for you. I'm sure they'll get you a working one. That sucks.
Oh c'mon Ed. . .I can't imagine anyone caring about what YOU can't imagine! You don't like Nikon? That's fine, but nobody cares Ed. . .What I care about is results. . .NOT the brand! Shoot what you like, but don't even tell me what "brand" you used. . .Just show me the results. I'm tired of the back and forth about "brands". . .I'm from Missouri, the "Show Me State". So just show me the results and if they're excellent I'll compliment you. . .No matter what "brand" you used. . .As the great Ansel Adams said, "The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it." I'll bet Ansel could have taken one of Hudson's Nikon's out and come back with some great results. . .Yeah, I'll bet he could have!
All that aside, Nikon's not going anywhere. Too valuable a brand with too great a product. The lens design is better because of smart engineering choices and the build quality and UI is just superior as it always has been. I've read a lot of eulogies for Hasselblad too over the last decade and Nikon is a far more valuable brand. Worst case scenario? Major management changes. They aren't about to head into Kodak and Minolta land. They just haven't made adjustments to the 21st century's marketing landscape. We'll wait and see, but I just don't enjoy shooting Sony, Canon or Leica as much and while I do enjoy Fuji, it can't match my Nikons.
Up in Beaverton. Had to evacuate my brother and his wife and grandparents up from OC. Their property is still in Level 3. Good to see a fellow Nikon shooter. Not many of us around it seems. Have a D4, D850 and Z6. Main work right now is interiors. Look at PortlandImagery dot com. Glad your all safe.
I live in Australia and I can remember this sorta thing from the start of the year. The smoke was pretty intense. Good luck and stay safe
Thank you! Have been trying to decide if the upgrade is worth it! :) LOVE the older one I have. Great info :)
Amazing lens!! thx!!
Anyone who loves Nikon, as much as you do, is ok in my book.

Great video, thanks! I’m around 40th at our local camera store’s waiting list for the 70-200S. Can’t wait.
Glad your mom and aunt got out and are safe.
Thanks , glad your all safe, please stay that way, take care from Scotland.
I always love your vids. Precise. Detailed. On the point. Thank you!
Relieved to hear that you and all your folks are doing fine in this very trying times :- ))
Hi Hudson
Great video!!
I love your style on your videos!!
You have a great teaching ability.
Best wishes

Another great video Henry. Thanks for your valuable contribution to the community. Best wishes from Switzerland.
I can't even imagine that kind of wildfire. Praying you get some beneficial rain and that you and your family continue to stay safe
Stay safe Marty. Rough is an uderstatement.
I appreciate your insight. Great content both technical and personal. Thank you!
Stay save too. Thank you for your comments on this lens 👍👍😊🙋♂️
Stay safe!
Thanks so much. You too. Hang in there. Thankfully the winds are backing off and about to switch back to west. That will help.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto I never thought I'd anticipate a change in the wind so much! I'm looking forward to seeing blue skies once again - or better yet, rain clouds!
Hudson, may you and all your family stay safe and healthy.
We don't need to scrub through the video, we watch them in their entirety!
Glad you guys are okay out there. Love the channel, as always.
I have the old 80-200/f2.8 ED lens, and it is probably the sweetest glass I have. Now that I've taken the leap to the Z6 ii, this lens is calling my name....
I had that lens years back. This lens will literally make you giggle as you shoot and edit the results. :)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto that sound you hear is me dropping pennies into my piggy bank! Love your work, sir - great videos!
Thanks for sharing these
Thank you...glad all are safe. Just Subscribed to your channel.
Been wondering if I should replace my F mount 70-200 with the S. Thanks for the advice.
You be safe too my friend. :-)
All the best for you and family
Very Nice! Mine's still on black order, but the TCx2 and the new battery are in! Stay Safe!!
I'll bet you have it soon. :)
Stay safe out there guys. Hope you leave all this behind in 2021
Mine is finally on the way after ordering in January. BTW the Kirk replacement foot for this lens in on sale right now for 20 dollars off!
I was just about to ask about comparison with the VRII when you touched on that. I guess I need to start saving up...
thanks for this video, nice you talk about the fl-ed @f 2.8; but what if you already own the 70-200 f 4 lens, is the s f2.8 a worthwile upgrade, for the $1500AUD that you pay for it?, or is it still worth sticking to the f4 ?
Never been a fan of the F4. It's just not very good in backlit situations which I love. The FL ED was arguably the best 70-200 on the planet till the S version was released. I had the 2.8 VRII, and when I shot about 10 images with a workshop student's FL ED in a South Carolina swamp a few years ago I handed it back and said... You just cost me a lot of money damn it. :) I think if you test the S version, it may cost you a lot of money. :)
Great information and photos in Utah we are hearing these fires are being deliberately set? Stay safe keep us informed.
I wish my preorder of January from Adorama would arrive. The only change is that it is not preordered anymore but us backordered. Hooray.
Matt Irwin's chromatic aberration test showed an absolutely clean result. That has been a pet peeve of mine with some G lenses.
I have not found objectionable CA in a single S lens yet. Even the kit lens for the Z50 is exceptional in that regard.
I HOPE NIKON WILL SOON FOCUS ON COLOUR SCIENCE, Compared to other camera I love how sharp nikons camera are..
hmmmm, I adore the color out of my Z cameras. I felt Nikon really got it right there with the D850 and 500, and D5 and then upped the game more with the Z6 and 7. Different strokes for different folks perhaps.
stay safe , you and your family
I have to learn how to throw my camera and lens around while talking. :-)
Nice video! Stay alert and be safe!
I haven't had that kind of focus breathing with my FL DE and I've tested it. Odd. The VRII sure had the problems you're describing.
Silly question but... do you remember the make of your stand at desk? Loving that, although not as much as the lens! 😃
Hudson, it would be a good idea to put a "Z" in the title so people can find this video easier when looking for this lens. I only found this because I already knew about your channel.
2020 certainly has been a disaster. Fingers crossed it gets better going into next year. Nice lens too. Hope those fires die off soon as possible!
Best lens
I think it is the best 70-200. The newer 100-400 proves a better lens for my work and I sold the 70-200, but it is stellar.
Oh yeah, You willLOVE the 70-200 S. :-)
How does the Z 70-200 go?
@@hans6304 Love it. I see why people love this lens. It's very heavy but if you can get over the weight it's amazing.
The FL ED and this new S lens are made for 46+ :-)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thanks for the reply

So here's this lens, super great. Also, the world is on fire but we'll get to that later. (John skips ahead to moving mom off the farm...) Dude. So crazy. I was just at D lake last week sipping a cold one in my water wings.
Right? No shit man. Horrible. :-( How you guys holding up.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto All good! Keeping it real in the home studio. :)

If you are on budget would Tamron 70-200 F2.8 is preferred or Nikon 70-20 F4.
Any feedback is appreciated.
having not shot with the Tamron, I just can't say.
you said Z50 in the video, can the 70-200 be put on a crop sensor (APSC) camera, and without it cropping in, or does the z50 cause the lens to lose apature, or increase focal length?, like a teleconvertor would?
Watching this 3 years later and remember how messed up the sky was in eugene.
You’re a localism Oregon guy! Awesome video! I’m down in Creswell. If you’re ever in Eugene and want to grab a beer and talk z gear shoot me a message.
Ha that was supposed to say localish
Off topic: Any thoughts on why the 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is in such short supply?
sigh, I think it's the pandemic and supply chain issues. That and an underestimate of how popular that lens would be. With good reason of course.
Suppose if I've got the 70-200 original VR I definitely need this lens? :)
Hudson, I'm trying to figure out why Nikon did not release a 70-400 lens, much more useful lens like the one I've used on my D2Xs for years, and much better for sports too. Why didn't they give us a 70-400?
Quality, there is a lot of distortion in extremely long ranges
🙏🏾
Thanks for sharing. One question - what do you think about the pricing of these new lenses? I found them quite expensive...
Best,
Hi Hudson. I have the 70-200 f4 with FTZ on a Z6. Was hoping for a 70-200 f4 z. Do you think it will be awhile before it is out?
Yeah, but i'm excited for that lightweight version too. :-)
Hudson stay safe!!
Smoke, on of the worst things to expose a Imaging Sensor to, as the stuff will weld itself on. Particularly bad for Mirrorless as the Sensor is constantly exposed, and a lot of Zoom Lenses are inhaling and exhaling constantly
Love to see how that lens performs on a z50?
I've used it a ton on the Z50. It's great!
Hudson Henry Photography Thank you for sharing this insight and info🙏
Can yo make comparison between 70-200/2.8 S and 24-200 ?
I can't since I haven't shot the 24-200 yet, but I feel really sure that the IQ of the 70-200 will be significantly better. I plan to test the 24-200 in the next few weeks and I'll certainly make some comparisons, but the two lenses are in very different leagues. The 24-200 makes compromises too be all things to the photographer without the option to carry a 24-70 and 70-200. I've always preferred a 70-200 2.8, a 50 1.8 and/or a 24-70 (these days the F4). That said, I hear great things about it and I'm excited to give it a try. :)
How does the new S lens do in backlight situations. The e fl vr wants to hunt and not focus .
Hmmm, I've not had that problem with the FL ED 2.8. It's great in backlight. You just need to find a good contrast line.
Thks for this video and first take care of your family!!! Best wishes from France!!!
Thank you for sharing and I’d think you’re an awesome TH-camrs and photographer and love to meet one day.
thanks so much for that!
Where are you and friends kiteboarding in this video?
Sauvie Island
LOL
Sounds like I will notice a difference.
Great lens just the annoying wrongly placed zoom!🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
With a bit of time, the old ones feel wrong now. The FL-ED F mount was the first to switch so I've had about 5 years with it now. :-)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto yes your correct, now i have to teach my old muscle memory to hit the right zoom ring :)
Right around the time of this video I got married and the fires were a couple miles from my house
Which L bracket is that you are using?
I'm a Kirk ambassador because I think they make the best gear and are super nice people to boot. All my gear links are here: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks
So since I am still in town, are you going to let me steal that from you, LOL j/k - I know how you feel when you get a new toy "wink"
Stay safe most important!
I got mine 2 weeks ago
And i have a problem with mine
I shoot in afc or afs in dynamic oir single or eye af my image jumps after i push the shutter button
So my focus box stays in the same spot but my image jumps up or down left or right 2mm i would say! On my z6 an also z7 so it has to do with the lens and stabilisation super annoying today for portrait shoot i focus on the eye push the button the image jumps now the nose is in the focus box
I can not be the only one with the problem
Get on Nikon quickly. I was just thinking that I forgot to mention how much steadier mine feels shooting up close zoomed in handheld than even the FL ED. I sure haven't heard of this except for you. I'm sure they'll get you a working one. That sucks.
Hudson Henry Photography oh no :( so if you push the button the image dont jumps ? :(
Damn it i have video of it
F2.8 is sharp timeline 6:38

i can't imagine anyone putting new money into nikon
@@BluesImprov triggered you i guess?
@@HudsonHenryPhoto sony = the new nikon.
