  • I'm using a technique called Hot Water Irrigation [H.W.I.] on this tie dye shirt. This is my first time trying this technique, but it won't be my last. I'm really happy with the results of this shirt and I can't wait to try more like it!

    I’ve seen some shirts that are insane on Instagram and have a sneaky feeling they are using a controlled method of HWI. I’m going to try some crazy ties and see what happens. ✌🏻lol my wife cracks up because I call it hot water injection 😀I do think this is a great method for tight sinew ties to monitor the dye absorbing into the fabric. Plus you can always add more dye. Thanks again for taking the time.

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's funny - technically you are injecting the shirt with hot water! I think HWI is a great technique - it's also great to be able to control the saturation.

    If you've ever done Sous Vide cooking the wand for that works PERFECTLY for heating water to whatever exact temp you want! Heats up quick and you can just clamp it to the side of a pitcher to heat and then pour into the sprayer. I tend to go up into the 160 range as I figure the water cools a good bit coming out of the sprayer as a mist.
    For sure try mixing soda and dye together, jelly jars are perfect for storage and it doesn't go bad for months on end. I use 3:1 soda to dye for dark colors and 2:1 for lighter colors. Just shake the jars to mix and when done the powder flows VERY smoothly! You can use little decorating confectionary sugar spoons to make all sorts of crazy patterns. :) Works well in those battery operated sugar writers too but changing dye colors is a hassle unless you buy like ten - the spoon is easier with the way this flows.
    Your shirt came out great, reminds me a little of one I did that was purple, steel, and black for a friend. I'll be trying to duplicate that one tonight for myself and someone else who wants one lol.

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen others use the sous vide wand and it looks like it works great for heating the water. I looked them up on Amazon and they aren't that expensive either. At least not for the ones that I would purchase to use for tie dye.
      I decided at the last minute to give HWI a try and so I just kind of made it work. I bought the sprayer months ago, but I've been waiting for it to warm up so I could use it outside. Thank you for all the tips - especially the dye to soda ash ratios. I want to try mixing the soda ash and dye together. I bought some confectionary sugar spoons a few months ago intending to use them for just that purpose. I tried them with just plain dye and they didn't work so well because the dye didn't flow smoothly off of the spoon. However, once I add the soda ash that should make them work much better. I've only made 1 shirt so far, but I really want to keep experimenting with this method. I am always looking for new techniques to try and this one has me intrigued.
      I'm sure your shirt ended up looking great - I love that color combination!

      @@FunEndeavors HWI is fun because you can turn shirts around so fast! I’ve done it a few times and had good success! You can get some crazy patterns laying the dye and be very exact. You need not mix large quantities of dye and can mix techniques using it too. It works under ice just fine, I’ve not tried over ice but see no reason why it wouldn’t work. I’ve used it on shirts alongside regular dye with good results. I think you’ll find it works much better with the confection spoons and with other implements where dye tends to stick, even turquoise mostly behaves!
      Buy a decent Sous Vide wand, you can cook with it too! No need to keep it separate since it never sees anything but water even when cooking food. It’s good for heating water for Out White Bright too though I still struggle with that. Sous Vide Everything is a fun TH-cam channel to learn more about cooking with them.

    When you have some time, could you do a spiral with a 3XL t-shirt? Most of my family members are large and I tried to do a couple of 5XLs over the weekend. Really hard to make a spiral and keep it in place. Maybe you have some tricks/hints?

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sure will. It's easier to start with a damp shirt. Then I use either a fork or a pair of locking tweezers to start the spiral. When I am spiraling with one hand, I use the other hand to form additional folds in the spiral. I usually hold the folds in place with rubber bands. I found a package of rubber bands at Target that has a variety of sizes and there are some pretty large ones that are great for larger shirts or hoodies. www.target.com/p/u-brands-7-4oz-rubber-bands-assorted-sizes/-/A-16603894?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000014846099&CPNG=PLA_Electronics%2BShopping_Brand%7CElectronics_Ecomm_Hardlines&adgroup=SC_Electronics&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=c&location=9026488&targetid=aud-561979087883:pla-82461707569&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1248099&gclid=CjwKCAjwn8SLBhAyEiwAHNTJbW7nyfAiF5ox3cmIq9ETI1031xlWLqYusI_1SCf9e-IPHRgPr9XQJhoC4soQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

    hi! love the video!! i was looking into buying those powder dyes and it’s hard to know how much powder you’re getting when it’s your first time buying them. i like the size of the jars you have in this video, what size are these jars if you don’t mind me asking?? like how much weight??

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! The majority of the jars I am using out of are 2 ounces. They sell the dye powder by weight and so the amount of powder in each jar depends on the color. However, you can usually get several shirts out of a 2 ounce jar.
      If you are ordering from Dharma Trading Company and plan to mix the dye to use as a liquid, a color with no "*" beside the color name will go further than one with one or two "*" because you will only use 2 teaspoons of dye to mix 1 cup of liquid dye. However, a color with one "*" will use 4 teaspoons of dye and a color with two "*" will use 8 teaspoons of dye.
      If you are using the powdered dye like I did in the video - it doesn't matter. You will use the same amount of dye regardless of the "*".

    • @FunEndeavors

      No, most people mix their soda ash and dye powder together and skip the soda ash soak. I don't do enough hot water irrigation right now to mix my dye and soda ash and then have to find the containers and space to store the mixtures. I still prefer to do this modified version. Since I'm already soaking shirts for liquid and ice dyeing, I don't find it inconvenient.
