    Hi. New subbie here. I recently started painting from scratch not knowing anything about art or painting. I started because I am a lost person right now. My mother past away my aunt past away my God Father past away. My uncle past away. I have no one anymore. So I found peace in painting. I searched art galleries and your channel came up. Im so grateful for the way you observe and explain the content. Thank you for sharing your voice and the music is peace for me as well. Thank you.

      Lost my mother three years ago, and my two brothers two years ago. I am also an amateur painter. I just felt compelled to reach out to you and say hello and....hang in there.

    I lit up when i heard Jay Heikes mentioned. I took his Painting as Object course at MCAD years back. Even though i unfortunately could not afford to continue my studies at the school, that course was the single most influential painting course i ever took. Truly life-changing experience.

    Thank you Mary Lynn, it's very generous of you to take the time and effort to share these experiences. Lovely smooth camera work and you possess an adorable voice. It's very calming. I really appreciate the content of your voiceover too. It takes bravery to talk publicly about art. All much appreciated.

    Your interest and comments and obvious passionate interest of modern day art are touching. Thank you for sharing the goings on in the NYC art world. I watched this and cringed. I wonder what Michelangelo or da Vinci would say? Seriously! I remember reading an article in ArtNews about 40 years ago, and the gallery owners (like Saatchi) said that they didn’t consider showing any artist’s work unless they had shown ability to progress from a traditional education and ability. The early studies of Picasso are a great example. This is no longer true. I’ll never get it 😢. Guess beauty truly is “in the eye of the beholder”! Again thank you for your postings. ❤

    Although there were some pieces that definitely approached art, it was not the majority. For me, one of the tests for aesthetic validity is how well the art piece stands up to time. I wonder how well doll baby heads, cartoon characters and cute animals will be viewed in 50 years. I am a painter, but I saw little evidence of the artists attempts to create abstract images that move a persons psyche or physical wellness. I do see a lot of re-creation of common topics of misuse, racial bias, power misuse and political domination, which I find passe'. And so, I will have to go with the sculpture for moving me to thought. The painting just doesn't have it for me. But many thanks for your thoughtful review. I no longer live close to NY and the art district - I do miss seeing that.

    • @cosmic-fortytwo
      @cosmic-fortytwo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of this was just pretentious art-babble. "He's making commentary on culture with these paintings." How to talk about something without saying anything. "He's moving away from the abstract into a mix of more recognisable objects." Oh good, he's not just painting blobs anymore, this one's a chair! "This sculpture lives in a state between construction and de-construction." haha oh you mean she almost finished it? lol I found the commentary in this video unintentionally hilarious.

  • @charlestaylor6279
    @charlestaylor6279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hello again Mary, very nicely done video, but I'm missing something. I must be a bit thick, a bit stupid I suppose. I started producing my own abstract art about 1960. It was fun. Then I got a job in engineering and became a draughtsman and illustrator in the Chemical, Nuclear and Defense Industries. I can produce anything. Oil portraits, machines, animals, landscapes etc. You name it and I can draw it and then paint it. I can work from photographs 150 years old. I can work from verbal instructions and I can work from a rough sketch. I can get started straight away, and then change what I've done, because I've just had new instructions from the client the next day. Yes, I can understand quite a bit about a zillions different things and I made a huge amount of money listening to clients and then giving them what they wanted.
    But there's one thing I will NEVER be able to understand and that is why anyone would part with his hard earned money in order to buy what these galleries have for sale. If they can sell that "stuff" then good luck to em. But where I come from in the North West of England and North Wales and also where I now live - Here in Ban Chang, Thailand you could not give that stuff away for free.
    Where am I going wrong. Do I really need to have a super high IQ to be able to understand what's driving these people.
    Kind regards to all Chris in Thailand go2ssff@gmail.com

      @simonlinke1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer is in your question Charles. By and large contemporary art, the things May Lynn shows, are expressions of resistance to the instrumental use of art. i.e. commerce for its own sake. Instead the focus is on directing the viewer to the array of feelings, experiences and thoughts that can't be easily articulated by most, but which are nonetheless powerfully felt by all. Often that means helping us to understand ourselves, our half formed thoughts, and feelings we don't recognise. Paradoxically the pleasure and meaning that provides simulates sales as collectors, and those who wish they could be collectors, want to get closer to, and hold on to that experience. The way you frame the question shows you're already half way there. Resistance and incredulity are the first steps to having your world view reframed.

    • @charlestaylor6279
      @charlestaylor6279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@simonlinke1 Sorry Simon, but I'm not convinced. Trying to release my feelings is not a problem. I should explain, I've qualifications in psychology and practical hypnosis. Yes, I hypnotize clients to help them stop smoking and sort out other kinds of problems. Yes, looking at an interesting picture can be fascinating. But a lot of the stuff that's sold as "brilliant and very expensive" leaves me puzzled. As an artist I can see what's been done to produce the painting. But I really don't care how the artist felt when he was doing it. You can look at Michael Angelo's "David" in Florence and be amazed, be fascinated. But I don't consider the artists feelings and how he was worn out day after day chipping away at a huge piece of marble that was too small and really the wrong shape to allow the artist to produce what we see today. No, I just want to look at a painting and think. "I like that"

    Thank you Mary Lynn for your Chelsea gallery tour. I haven't been to Chelsea galleries since Covid shut down. You TH-cam tour helped me reconnect with art. Your commentary is excellent, your are there, informative but not obtrusive. It works well with the music background, makes an it enjoyable experience. I often spend time on TH-cam looking at art, artists, art exhibits and your channel came up, it was a fortunate find.
    I like Angel Otero, it seems I have see him before, but collaging of oil skins is quite effective. I like the focus on the image, and the story behind them. I love the chair in the bathtub, looks like a good way to get out of summer heat! I also liked Diana al-Hadid. I am teaching art history and saw sculptural connections. I have subscribed. Look forward to more. When we are back to "normal" will you be giving tours in person? I have attended a few Chelsea Gallery tours in the past. Leonard

    I think the first and the last exhibits were my favorites.
    The last, where the rags were configured together, reminded me of something I did in graduate school. I am talking aesthetically only. The narrative was completely different.
    I find it amazing when people can articulate their work so well. I have had a difficult time doing that with my own work. I feel like I am just learning how to do that.
