👍4 ever a part of my life...the countless days and hours I laid on the floor with a pair of headphones on in the 70,s and listened to his GREAT music. Back then, I had school and sports in the day and listened to Lightfoot, Elton, and Carly in the evening .....RIP!!
I first heard this song in the 70’s in the UK Lived in Toronto in the early 90’s Had some tickets to see Gordon in a theatre in Yonge Street Missed him by one week as I was back in the UK Still listen my vinyl Missed
Rest in peace Gordon. Top of the list artist for my husband and me. He cancled twice at Fox in Tucson, Arizona. Was looking forward to seeing him for the fourth time. If You Could Read My Mind ,my favorite .
One of the greatest musician artists in the 20th century. Songs that immediately impact your soul, heart, and bring cause to your most precious memories. Blessed.
Absolutely love Gordon since I was young and even when Led Zeppelin and all the greats where at their prime. Gordon Lightfoot STILL stood out. ONE OF THE BEST..Lots of us love you Gordon..
If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old-time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well In a castle, dark, or a fortress, strong With chains upon my feet You know that ghost is me And I will never be set free As long as I'm a ghost, that you can't see If I could read your mind, love What a tale your thoughts could tell Just like a paperback novel The kind the drugstores sell When you reach the part where the heartaches come The hero would be me But heroes often fail And you won't read that book again Because the ending's just too hard to take I'd walk away like a movie star Who gets burned in a three-way script Enter number two, a movie queen to play the scene Of bringing all the good things out in me But for now, love let's be real I never thought I could act this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old-time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well In a castle, dark, or a fortress, strong With chains upon my feet But stories always end And if you read between the lines You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand The feelings that you lack I never thought I could feel this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feelin's gone And I just can't get it back
Rest in peace Gordon You intrigued my love life as a young teen. I was a dreamer then still dreaming today. All those beautiful woman you shared your poetry leaving a mark on so many lives!
It's funny, reading these comments was how I found out that Mr. Lightfoot had passed away and as I sat listening to the song and thinking over how the song had always made me feel and also kind of mourning the loss of a great writer I had an epiphany: This was exactly how I've always felt when I listened to "If you could read my mind", just like this, a little moody, a little contemplative, maybe even a little depressed but...soothed too. Maybe that's what Gordon was going for, I don't know but his writing and my heart were walking side-by-side for a moment and it was a little miracle I hadn't expected. RIP, Gordon.
Growing up in Montreal in the 1970s, Gordon Lightfoot's songs were a staples on local radio. I was about 5 or 6 when this song came out. Had no idea what it was about but something about it touched me. As an adult it took on a whole new meaning. It is haunting and melancholy but beautiful at the same time. Rest in Peace Mr. Lightfoot :(

I'm too young to know him, but I sure do love him and have for years. I was born in the wrong decade. Think I was 3 when this came out & I can remember belting it out with my mom in her maverick lol
I grew up in the Rochester, NY area, just across the Lake (Ontario) from where Gordon comes from. I heard his music all the time on Western NY radio stations. What a wonderful writer & recording artist he is! His music never gets old!
Another amazing song that I have just discovered, I had no idea who he was but this song is so beautiful and soulful, I am so glad I found it, wonderful.

Oh wow! I'd love to be able to play this song on my guitar! I'm just learning how to play the guitar. I remember my dad playing this song, on his. I hope I can learn how to play it, this song is so beautiful. XO
It strikes me how much the graphic novel (and TV series) "Locke & Key" seems to be based on this one song. I always got the feeling while listening : "This song could inspire me to do several works of art", but I guess someone beat me to it!
Just like an old time movie, 'bout a ghost from a wishing well. In a castle dark or a fortress strong, with chains upon my feet. You know that ghost is me.
If, and only if you could. No truth in communication is the key to my decision to rewrite my story once again in life. I really don’t get it , but it is what it is now.
There's so many songs that I've known for decades that I've never really felt the depth and gravity of until I started singing and playing them. (badly)
thank you. after looking at a list of chords and muttering to myself about a G7 chord that I couldn't hear when listening to the tune, I feel a little vindicated. not to say it isn't in one of Lightfoot's performances, but it's a lovely song as presented here.
Does anyone here know the story of how this song was written? John got in a fight with Annie, he decided to go skiing and by the time he skied down the mountain he had written this song...
To Play this properly it needs to be finger picked ... Not an easy pattern. The Intro Chords are G G(add9) Verse starts G G(add9) Dm6/F . Have fun, I have Gords original sheet music for this that I bought back in 1980 .
I am so happy to find your channel...I retired after 40 years with GM and have been focusing on playing guitar better and you have a lot of songs on here that I can play along with and it just brings me joy to be able to do this...I DO have a question for you: I'm confused because whenever the number it says to use the capo on it's seems to be the one before it..I asked my musician brother on a zoom call about it and he says maybe my capo isn't tight enough? Does that make sense? Anyways I find a way to make it work and look forward to many more ...This latest one is one of my all time favorite songs by Gordon Lightfoot so thank you for contributing these songs with the chords and lyrics.
If by the number before you mean instead of putting the capo on 2nd fret you are saying you have to put it on the first in order to get the same key as the original? My guess would be the original song is tuned a half step down and your guitar is in standard E tuning. That would render your key a half step too high if the song is in Eb tuning. Not sure what else could be the problem
@@Shadezman76 Yes that is exactly what I'm saying..even if it says Capo 1 then it doesn't need a capo but I will look into what you're saying about the tuning of my guitar...I learned to play by ear so I'm doing the best I can without any help, so thank you for pointing this out to me.
According to gordon Lightfoot songbook; standard tuning, capo on 2nd fret. I try to play along to thr recording, sounds in tune, I just have to work out the fingerstyle pattern

Love these pieces you’ve been setting in Time of yours n ours into the heaven of rock R.I.P. Gordon, Mr.Lightfoot
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old-time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle, dark, or a fortress, strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost, that you can't see
If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take
I'd walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three-way script
Enter number two, a movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now, love let's be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old-time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle, dark, or a fortress, strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand
The feelings that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feelin's gone
And I just can't get it back
Rest in peace Gordon You intrigued my love life as a young teen. I was a dreamer then still dreaming today. All those beautiful woman you shared your poetry leaving a mark on so many lives!

The car was a little bit messy and I had to take a shower and wash my hair before the car wash and I had to wash it off before I could get to relax 👍👍👍!!! 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 “”” 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16 0:16
He was awesome
Excellent! Thank you!!
Oh wow! I'd love to be able to play this song on my guitar! I'm just learning how to play the guitar. I remember my dad playing this song, on his. I hope I can learn how to play it, this song is so beautiful. XO
Wonderful! :D
It strikes me how much the graphic novel (and TV series) "Locke & Key" seems to be based on this one song. I always got the feeling while listening : "This song could inspire me to do several works of art", but I guess someone beat me to it!
I was about 10 when this came out but I remember being so taken with this song and Neil Diamond's voice.
Great song. RIP Gordon Lightfoot ❤
Love lost. Great song!!one of my all time favs
Really Amazing 💓💓💓💓💓❤️💕😻💕😻
Thanks Joanne. 😊
You’re welcome 😊
i just love this song so much
I am glad for you that you found C and that she makes you happy.
I've got to say that I (D) just don't get it. The hero (D) would be (Em) mE. But heroes often fail...
Sad day...a great poet and singer is gone...
Sad.....sad. But when real love comes NOTHING. absolutely nothing can take the feeling away.
So true, probably why I can't stop crying 😭 everytime I hear it. But definitely excellent tune.
Just like an old time movie, 'bout a ghost from a wishing well.
In a castle dark or a fortress strong, with chains upon my feet.
You know that ghost is me.
😂😂😂😂In A Castle Dark.
Fortress Strong Thank You
Youuuuu Legend. AND RIP. RICHARD 😂😂😂😂
godspeed dude
I love the soar.

If, and only if you could. No truth in communication is the key to my decision to rewrite my story once again in life. I really don’t get it , but it is what it is now.
gordon lightfoot wrote this fantastic song about his impending divorce great great song
I truly powerful song.
Thank You ❣️
r.i.p. a beautiful song
Been trying to learn this song
Dream a little dream play along
I'm 69
Loved his music
There's so many songs that I've known for decades that I've never really felt the depth and gravity of until I started singing and playing them. (badly)
Rest in Power
thank you. after looking at a list of chords and muttering to myself about a G7 chord that I couldn't hear when listening to the tune, I feel a little vindicated. not to say it isn't in one of Lightfoot's performances, but it's a lovely song as presented here.
It's two years late, but fyi, there is concert video of GL playing this song with a capo on the second fret.
@@thomascolbert2687 thank you :)
I'm probably the 200k out of the 210k views on this :D
Does anyone here know the story of how this song was written? John got in a fight with Annie, he decided to go skiing and by the time he skied down the mountain he had written this song...
To Play this properly it needs to be finger picked ... Not an easy pattern. The Intro Chords are G G(add9) Verse starts G G(add9) Dm6/F . Have fun, I have Gords original sheet music for this that I bought back in 1980 .
Can we talk about the string arrangement? And the second (third?) guitar parts?
Exactly!
