Timestamp Time! (Also happy belated Birthday, Metal!) - Total Boba Fett Snipes: 13
Note: I will be doing the Superchats but I thought I should get this portion out before too long. They’ll be in this thread when they’re done. Also once again, they're about 10 seconds behind.
0:06:30 - MauLer: I’m going to guess this is a nine hour video (lmao)/The blurbs start
0:23:23 - The rules of the synopsis (Also Trungo dies ☹)
    -EPISODE 1-
0:25:02 - Expectations for Fringy and MauLer were subverted - on the bridge
0:27:33 - The facial animation/It’s nice to see new 3D animated styles/They’re using the facial animations to show rather than tell
0:29:08 - MauLer reads out the song Powder sings on the bridge
0:30:46 - Boba Fett snipe/Who here has played League?/You don’t need to play the game to watch the show
0:36:29 - What the enforcers and Topside mean to Vi/This opening shakes off preconceived notions of what the League of Legends Netflix show is going to be very quickly/“You’re probably wondering how I got here”-Vi, probably
0:39:38 - The most controversial topic in the entire series (“Enemy”)/The songs in general/The opening’s visual symbolism/References to LoL/Fortiche’s advantage
0:53:37 - More video game adaptations (be afraid)/Halo’s TV show
1:01:30 - What was the budget for Arcane?
1:04:40 - “It’s called the *Book* of Boba Fett-books have chapters” (That’s not how books work)
1:05:32 - The episode begins/How the animation is done/Establish character through jumping from roof to roof
1:11:38 - The kids break into the Penthouse/Costume design/Claggor makes sure Powder gets onto the balcony safely/Facial expressions and benefits of animation/Powder is fascinated by the technology and able to identify it
    1:17:38 - The kids find the hexcrystal/Powder finds a sandwich!😊/Maybe there’s more sandwiches in this chest-no just more hexcrystals☹
1:21:49 - Oh no! The penthouse owner is coming back!/Powder picks up several hexcrystals but unfortunately one falls out and cause an explosion/Vi checks to make sure everyone is okay/Small animation touches
1:23:51 - The kids need to run away from enforcers/Character being shown from how they run away/They go down a trash compactor like in Star Wars and they escape
1:30:15 - It’s someone’s fault/Match cuts/The local bullies spot them/More character work: Claggor puts himself in front of Vi, Mylo is curious, and Powder is very worried/Powder is the support (Same)
1:33:09 - “Just a taste” (FIGHT!)/Jay hates Vi because she’s a woman/The fight is not clean and looks like they’re actually getting hurt. *And* they’re getting hurt on both sides/Vi actually gets hurt/Claggor is taking on 2 at once/Powder runs away, Mylo is just barely keeping up, Vi looks like she’s loosing for a second but pulls through
1:39:36 - Claggor is a chad and uses the epic pocket sand move/Mylo is losing his fight but Vi comes in with a Brie Larson/They’ve won but Deckard pulls out a knife and Vi T-poses
1:42:38 - Meanwhile Powder is running away/Powder is using a pipe bomb and those implications/Powder lip bites/The bomb doesn’t work so she throws the loot
1:46:36 - They go back to the lanes while arguing because Powder jinxes every job/“I’m surrounded by water”
1:52:05 - Introduction to the Undercity/Runeterra is a cringe name/The Undercity and Topside are visually distinctive/Discussion of “Playground”/The Pleasure House
2:00:49 - Underappreciated shot: Claggor looking at Powder
2:02:08 - The reverse of a neckbeard refused to pay Huck full price/Don’t mess with the bartender/Tobacco/The introduction of Vander
    2:12:24 - Drinker arrives
2:15:20 - Vander vs Huck’s demeanor/Vander sees the kids come in the door, he knows that they had something to do with the explosion/Vi: “How did you get so comfortable living in someone else’s shadow?”/Vander and Vi chat/Vander is a good dad/Vander is speaking to a younger version of himself/Really great example of subtext and achieving more than one thing with dialogue
2:24:21 - Vander collects Claggor to go to Benzo’s and Powder realizes that she has the hexcrystals/Powder catches the worst part of the conservations/Facial expressions - no mocap but references/Micromovements of the eyes/Annoying overhearing trope is not terrible in this
2:32:32 - If you keep any *eye* on it, you see the micro eye movements/They’re not overpraising the show also everything else is shit/3-D animation has improved substantially
2:34:58 - Vander is at Benzo’s shop/Ekko’s working on the clock(I’m sure that doesn’t mean anything😊)/A guy came into Benzo’s shop, didn’t even haggle and so Ekko followed him/Vander: “There are worst things than enforcers” as he holds his arm/Claggor: “We wouldn’t be here if Vi hadn’t kicked their asses.” (Claggor is a humble Chad)
2:39:07 - The enforcers Grayson and Marcus arrive at Benzo’s shop/Marcus vs Grayson and how indictive it is at the world of large/Vander and Grayson have a chat with a funny Benzo expression
2:48:06 - Back to Powder and Vi/Also Ekko is listening in and there’s some masks in the background/Vi tells Powder she doesn’t have to be a fighter and that doesn’t help/Vi takes Powder to the rooftop to explain that everyone has bad days/Powder shows Vi the hexcrystals
2:52:36 - Introducing Silco/All the details of the lair/Who’s standing in the background?/Is Silco in the games?/Every Frame is a Painting/Feeding a drug to a rat and it fucks up a cat

      -EPISODE 3-
4:33:37 - We open on Silco’s drowning monologue/From Silco’s perspective, Vander drowned/“It’s funny, you can a pass a lifetime without making a choice like that. For that, I thank you, old friend.”/This show has teeth meanwhile Marvel movies will never have that
4:38:51 - Vi realizes that it’s Vander and Benzo rather than the enforcers. Vander is going to sacrifice himself leaving Benzo in charge./“You have a good heart. Don’t let the world take that from you.”

4:46:58 - On Topside, Viktor and Jayce are working together/Jayce doesn’t have anything to lose but worries about what Viktor is sacrificing/“Our hextech dream.”/It’s fun to watch Jayce and Viktor working on science stuff/Ekko let’s Vi out and saw everything, he also followed Silco to his hideout
4:50:54 - Silco and Vander have a conversation/The camera work/“For pride?” “For respect.”/Silco had the respect of all the undercity but it wasn’t enough. Vander shared Silco’s vision for the Nation of Zaun but be he betrayed Silco./Silco’s eye

5:01:21 - “I was left with an understanding: The only way to defeat an enemy is to become where they fear.”/What a life to live/Vander gets put in a chair/There’s something about the music/Sevika is in the background and she’s scowling
5:03:48 - Mel catches Jayce and Viktor/“Wait. This isn’t my bedroom.”/Mel has an interest in Jayce so she distracts a guard
5:05:00 - Vi gets back/The minute she looks at Powder, she’s breaks down/Powder starts packing up but Vi doesn’t let her. This reinforces Powder’s self-doubt./Vi realizes that she might of overstepped.
      5:08:29 - Trungo’s (I don’t know why Jay didn’t just search discord for Trungo’s but oh well)
5:10:10 - Camera work/Vi gives Powder a flare and to light it up if anything happens/Jayce and Viktor are working on the hexcrystal/“Are you sure this will work?” “Uhhhh…”

5:34:40 - “Really? After all that, now I have to fight the Hulk?”/Vander panics when she goes into the fight/Vi is incredibly lucky that she doesn’t die/Why does Silco not prevent that door being closed?/How it could have been fixed
5:42:51 - Final Jayce and Viktor scene/Mel understands the selfish motivations of the Councilors better than Heimerdinger
5:45:50 - It’s time. Powder pops two hexcrystals into her monkey bomb and one being hit with spikes on the symbols/Tense at seeing everyone doing everything/Deckard sees the monkey bomb/It doesn’t go off at first, it starts to calm down, but one last tick.

Ultimately, she did something horrible that she has to deal with it.
6:14:26 - “Everyone on the show right now has lost a lot of credibility for failing to even acknowledge the many disastrous flaws in this episode.”/“Did someone on EFAP really just say, ‘There might be problems but it’s so emotional’?”
6:23:35 - Vi repeats “I told you to stay away” and Powder is desperate for someone for emotional support/Vi punches (slaps?) Powder/Powder’s emotions: Shocked, scared, and then desperation-“Why did you leave?!”/The point of no return/Vi grabs Powder’s jaw/“Because you’re a jinx!”
6:27:52 - Powder’s nose bleeds onto Vi’s hand/You can’t blame Vi for having this reaction/Contrary to Vi’s character?/This is better than Luke Skywalker in TLJ/“Hurting a child is out of character for Vi-regardless of reason.”/Two very specific emotional states: I am incredibly angry and I can’t be here because I’m hurting someone I love/Vi does the mature thing in the situation and walks away.
6:31:50 - Really great detail of Powder cowering/Look at that shot/Mia Sinclair Jenness (VA for Powder) was ten years old when she played Powder (Also, I’ve heard that she did this scene in one take. There’s a really great Live Q&A with the Arcane cast on Cartoon Universe’s channel)
6:36:57 - And then Silco arrives/He gets a knife ready to kill Powder/Vi spots it/Imagery!/Vi runs straight back Marcus takes the opportunity to save a life/“It’s a huge plot hole that Vi didn’t get tried for her crimes.”/“What’s wrong little girl? Where’s your sister.”/Powder tackles him and hugs him/She really resonates him-they are not so different/“It’s okay. We’ll show them. We’ll show them all.”
6:44:51 - This is such a shock and shows all the wonderful possibilities that stories can take but look what we have./The visuals *help* show not tell./Discussion of “Goodbye” and ending themes

Arcane did what The Last of Us 2 tried and failed to do.
Killed a strong father figure early on.
Spent a lot of time with the people responsible.
Made the audience understand their side.
And from what i've seen, it seems that people were actually pretty sad at Silco's death.

Vander died by sacrificing his live to protect a person he cared, totally in character plus silco and him had a long history together that made both sides actions understandable.
Joel died like a meme, out of character and without any sort of understanding of what the devs were doing with him from the beginning of part 2, nobody knew who abby was so they tried to justified her actions by showing us her side of story at a point where everyone or at least myself didn't really cared.

"She's not my sister anymore" is a perfectly normal line for a sibling to utter in the heat of a mildly painful moment. You can say something and not mean it. And I think Powder didn't mean it either. She even acknowledged in ep 9 that Vi's voice got her through her hardships afterwards.

They aren’t nitpicking, that would require a legitimate criticism to exist. This doesn’t even qualify as that, Powder is perfectly in character to say that. She’s already established earlier on to be emotionally and mentally unstable/troubled, the scene of her in her bedroom having a mental breakdown is proof enough of this and she’s experienced a massive amount of emotional trauma in life already.
This isn’t to say that any like a character utters is justified by them being emotionally scared or mentally unstable, but this line certainly qualifies as being in line with those traits.

Yeah, I think some people think of relationships as a one-dimensional gradient between loathing and love, and that you can't love someone while also sort of hating them. Sometimes, I can't wait to get a few hundred miles back between me and my little sister, and I'd still wrestle a bear for her. We don't even have the complicating factor of her bombing all of my friends and our adopted father in our relationship.

I feel that, relationships (especially familial ones) are so weird and messy, you don’t just get angry with someone and decide you’re done with them for good, you don’t just forget about them… especially for a child who’s only remaining connection to her dead parents is her little sister. I can absolutely believe she’d get mad enough to leave in a fit of rage, but considering all context I think she’d prolly come back after thinking about what she’s doing, and that’s EXACTLY what she did..

If this takes 3 EFAPS, it will be the longest Unbridled Praise Mauler has ever done for any piece of media in existence. They stopped on almost every frame pointing out things that were insignificant by themselves, (the paper shards burning after the explosion, Vi's facial expressions, the movements of the characters as they run, etc), but cumulatively made each scene incredible. Think about it, Mauler and crew got this deep into the show and the worst thing they came up with was the contrivance of the ladder Ekko drops during the chase scene in ep 2. F'n hell.

Montreal in Canada is the royal mountain; Mount Royal.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a town here in Ontario, Canada; it's near Niagara Falls which comes off of the Niagara river but it's on the shore of Lake Ontario so it's Niagara-on-the-Lake.
More about Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Niagara River and Niagara Falls, the name Niagara is of indigenous origin and means "thunder of the water" which no doubt comes from the rapids down the river, itself.

The attention to detail in this show's animation is legitimately mindboggling. They talked alot in this stream about the small facial expressions and such, so I won't go into that here, but to me it's worth noting that they even animated tiny details on objects. For instance, one moment that impressed me was when Powder unlatched the strap on the backpack that had their loot in it, in order to throw it off the dock. If you look really closely, the hook on the latch actually moves. Despite the fact that it was a tiny part on a small strap, mostly blocked by her hand as she unlatched it, they still animated the the latch unhooking. It would be so easy to cut that corner. "Just create the latch, dont animate any of the parts on it, add in a clicking sound, it's a tiny detail and happens quick, who would notice anyway?"
The people making this show really must have cared about what they were making. You dont get this much right if you dont care.

"Did you actually watch it or were you doing other stuff?"
      "... Other stuff."
      "Nonono. Let's watch."
She reluctantly agreed to watch the first three episodes on the condition that I would drop it if she wasn't on board by the end of the third. First two episodes she was joking around like people do when they are trying not to get into something. But even then she kept saying that the animation was so gorgeous that it was distracting. By the third episode, she was deadly silent and at the end she wanted to keep going.
All that to say is that she noticed the same thing MauLer did about Jinx's nail polish and so much other shit that went over my head. The detail is incredible. And her eyesight is pretty terrible and yet the detail and quality of the art was not lost on her.
Side story, because it's funny. In the first scene when Jinx is walking off on her own to look through Jayce's apartment, as soon as she walks into his bedroom, she yelled, "Jesus Christ, that girl needs to eat a fucking sandwich!". And then I lost my shit for about 5 minutes straight.

About the confusion on the place names for "Zaun." If you look at the map that is shown from time to time, the Lanes (the Fissures) is only one part of the "Undercity." The best shot of the map is when Silco puts the grenade thingy on the map on his desk. There you can see is the Alcove District, Low Piltover, and something that looks like Southside baytown. That part is probably collectively known as Zaun as far as Silco is concerned.

I thought season 1 for the DotA anime was fine, not amazing but better than mediocre (the recent season 2 however had major pacing issues). I was a fan of the game so I might be a bit biased, but it seemed like a decent video game adaptation that didn't require knowing the lore in the game.
However, Arcane here absolutely knocked it out of the park. I never played LoL so I knew nothing about the lore although I knew a tiny bit about Jinx since she's a very recognizable character, but it yanked me right into its world. And after finishing the show I've been more curious about the franchise although I'm rusty AF at MOBAs and not excited about playing with toxic groups. I did just play through the RPG spinoff The Ruined King though, kinda meh but still it's cool that they're trying to expand its story to wider audiences.

Silcos plan was to kill them all.
He tells you the plan when they try to rescue Vander.
"Vander the coward fled town with his children"
Silco knew no one would believe the lie if the kids where still around, there is no way Vander would've left without them.
So he used Vander to bait them out.
Then he was gonna kill them all and say that they ran away
Nothing Silco did was to hurt Vander.
It's all to further "the cause".
Vander was a hinderence, he had to go.
For that to happen the kids had to go as well. This is also why he tries to get information about Vi out of Powder instead of just immediately killing her.
He needs ALL the kids dead or his plan falls apart.

When Vi looks down at her bloody hand it's not that it's Powders blood.
It's the realization that their blood is on her hands, literally in this case.
It's a representation of what Vander told her in episode 2:
"What happens to them is on you".
This all started cuz Vi took them on an unsanctioned mission, something they were not supposed or allowed to do.
Without that mission literally NONE of this would ever have happened.

Every action, every shot, and every line is pulling double duty with multiple layers of meaning, all of which are interacting in these fascinating ways. I watched untill almost the end of the 1st episode and then opened Netflix. I fucking binged this series until 3 a.m, tearing up several times. This is a masterpiece with flaws.
Having played the game for 3-4 years and a 9 years break till now I got most of the references. Nice, respectful touches, lines, easter eggs, mostly nothing overt and nonsensical.
My favourite is probably Victor. He has probably the least action-packed story but it really captivates. From a Zaun cripple to Heim's assistant to a second (almost unrecognised) father of HexTech. And all that couldn't stop his weak body from taking it all away slowly, all his efforts, perserverence of mind gave way to the fragile flesh. So he turned to things that are less science and more and more just magic or a type of science most should not delve into. This simple twig just wanted to make lives better, help his people and himself. I can't wait for more.

There is one small detail I think you guys missed out on that can explain away the Plot armour and has implications later on in the episode which is that when Silco saw Vi fighting his goons and winning, he saw Vander in her. He wanted Vander's Prodigy, and so he didn't order Deckard to kill her because he wanted her alive. That's why he later changes his mind after the explosion to "Kill them". That's why he explicitly gives that order after all is said and done, because previously he wanted to take Vi for himself.
That's why later on he wasn't checking on Vander's body, he was searching for Vi. It's why he asks Powder where her sister is, and he even elaborates on that in episode 6(?) when he says "I thought that you were the prize of your second hand family" when talking to Vi.

So I noticed quite a few times during this that the cast brought up how the animation looked extremely detailed in areas and how it may or may not be referenced and as an upcoming animator, not for Arcane let me note, using real world reference for your animation is a thing that's both commonly done and kind of expected of you.
Animation is done in multiple stages. First comes the reference footage where you act the intended action in real life, attempting to adhere to the final camera angles as best you can or in certain cases, just capturing the face or upper body to get more subtle hints such as the subtle eye darts or small facial changes that make a character more expressive. Then, using that reference footage, you do what's called blocking which involves posing the model in each of the major poses that you want your audience to remember, using more poses for more complex movements.
The first pass is next which involves adding interpolation between each pose and correcting any errors to make the movement smooth. Second pass is where your superior, typically the animation director, will tell you where you fucked up and what you should fix. Third pass, fourth pass, it continues like that until your superior becomes sick of sending you away with other problems wherein it's ready for rendering, sound mixing, generated materials, texturing, etc

It always interests me when EFAP praises something and people show up in chat confused as to how something with any flaws at all can be good. They don't realize that their own way of thinking is just as black and white as those who praise everything for the smallest reasons. Not much in life is binary. Good and bad are not definitive. It exists on a sliding scale, and usually one with many sliders taking different pieces into account.

This show really touched me the way media usually doesn't. I'm not very emotional. I've been referred to as extremely low energy, when it comes to getting either excited or upset.
At the end of episode 3, I had to take a break for like an hour before I could go onto episode 4. It was a good time for a break, with the time skip, but I had to take a break. I was weeping, my chest was shaking, and I felt like I was sadder than I'd been in a very long time. For the next several days, just thinking about the end of the third episode would have my chest shudder and feel like my eyes were about to leak.
I probably sound weak or overly emotional about this. I feel like that. I don't do this. Shows don't do this to me. This show destroyed me.

@@tuskinradar8688 I love this show so much, and because of that the incoming season 2 terrifies me. It is so easy to fuck up something incredible with just a few simple mistakes, but based upon how the season ended it seems likely that season two or even 3 has already been written. It doesn’t feel like an aimless cliffhanger, the writers seem to be building up to something and exasperating the tension between Piltover and Zaun even further than it already was, and considering hextech weapons were just established a few episodes prior, it will certainly lead to all out war.
All of this appears deliberate to me, so I’m holding onto my faith for now until season 2 drops.

After hearing a small amount of absolutely vigorous praise from you guys, I stopped watching your EFAP’s on the show to watch it myself.
I’ve never been happier with my choice.
Arcane was Fantastic. I’ve absolutely no experience with LoL, but I’ve come out of this show, with its amazing characters and world building, hooked to learn more. I’ve seen the various spin off games in adds recently but have only now found an interest in playing them, because of this show.
I know that that’s not exactly a great way to praise a show but I honestly couldn’t put into words why this show is awesome, besides saying that the character work is great and compelling, and I just had to see how the story unfolded and where these characters would go.
It baffles my mind that anyone has anything bad to say about it, so I’ll be checking out other, “critical” videos alongside your coverage of EFAP and try to figure why people don’t like this show, despite my experience with it.

Ok, mate, if you really wanna know I'll explain why I couldn't watch this show. In the very first episode everything that happens is all Vi's fault, she is super dumb, obnoxious and outright abusive to her sister. None of the drama that happens on screen had to happen if it was not for her absolutely irresponsible and stupid behavior. I felt like I was watching a fail compilation where people do stupid things in the gym that inevitably and predictably cause heavy stuff to fall on them causing horrific injuries and then cry and moan the whole time about how unfair life is. It's depressing and painful to watch. I don't know how anyone can enjoy that. I could hardly finish the first episode and I couldn't care less about what happens next. When someone like Vi is involved it can only get worse and lead to bigger fails and more stupid drama.
My daughters really liked the show, they convinced me to give it a try and I really wanted to love it too, but I just can't. Even Drinker and Mauler fanboying over it could not change my mind.

I find it kind of funny how people were surprised this turned out so good. I get not everyone plays league and tie in are often bad, but this is RIOT. They've been making animations for years that showcased the world building, character writing and so on they were capable off. Exploring everything from Music videos to full on short stories. Although it doesn't stop there. Even in game they try to showcase the personality of their characters and the interplay they have with others in the world. Talking too allies, taunting enemies, flirting, movement, idle animations and such. They've been gearing up for a success like Arcane for years. It was only a question of when, not if, they'd make a great full series in my opinion.
I mean seriously. You lot should check out their animations on TH-cam sometime. The seeds of Arcane's success started in those shorts and character breakdown videos.

Re: 5:37:02 Deckard not snapping Vi's neck after the Night King throat grab, I might be the only Arcane addict who feels this way but I don't think the intention was ever to kill the kids. Tattoo dude doesn't walk up to Vi and start stabbing; he looks back at Silco for the go ahead to kill a kid because that wasn't the plan. Deckard has no problem launching a fallen coworker off the bridge but he doesn't kill Vi because Silco had a use for her. Silco makes it pretty obvious he wants to turn Vander in to a shimmer monster. It's only after the shimmer plant is destroyed that Silco spits the order to kill the kids. Over the course of the following acts we learn that Silco will control powerful people (ie Marcus and Renni) by threatening their kids and in hindsight it's exactly the kind of leverage he would need to control a hulked out Vander.

The best example of this concept I ever saw was in one version of Hunter x Hunter I saw. Every episode ended with the preview of the next episode after the credits, using the same preview theme from the very first arc (it also plays when Gon catches the fish in the very first episode). In a late episode, just after finally being humanized, the main antagonist of the show's largest arc slowly dies in a post credits scene. Two seconds after the final words are quietly spoken to him, the preview theme starts at full blast. Our whole Discord went from somber silence to laughing uncontrollably in an instant. Legendary.

But there probably were a creative team assembled by highly talented artist who saw the potential in the game's vague but already established lore and took a gamble to make something outstanding out of it.
