It's a refreshing change to listen to a genuine engineer on TH-cam, so many people think performance yet know nothing about the structural quality of the engine, what works and what needs to be done to make it reliable
Make no mistakes, the N52 is very reliable. There are still lots of 325i cars running for 24h races. For the N54 I can imagine the engineers went on the conservative side and left a lot more safety in strength than actually needed because they did their last Turbo car in the 80's. But tuners fear not because there are good indicators that the B58 (340i etc.) does have a lot of tuning potential that even exceeds the N54's.
The N54 is a far better engine as far as tuning capabilities, but say what ya gotta say. The N54 is a far beeffier engine it's built stronger. pay attention to the head bolt diameters and other hardware strengths.
10:04 the lip on the head gasket is there to separate the cyl.head (Al) from the block (Mg) to avoid corrosion. The can live quite happily together as long as there is no water between them, eg. you're not making a galvanic reaction... Mg and Al are about 0.7V apart in that regard, so this is why 1/4 of the N52 workshop manual is 'dry the hole out', 'make sure the surfaces are dry' etc....

You just mentioned everything attached to the n54, not the n54 itself. The engine itself its strong as fuck, I myself being ST with ZERO issue since I've owned the car, normal issues like you mention but what part doesn't fuck up. I just lost my water pump at 168k miles, same injectors same ofhg. 9/10 you bought up a beat up n54 because everyone wants the power but dont wanna maintenance it, so they sell it because ermahgawd it's boosted so itll sell fast to another idiot who don't know shit mechanically, thus a history of shitty owners until it falls into the right hands.
Let's make a video explaining the differences of the n52 and n54 but let's use a n51 and describe it's differences....
the blocks are identical?
Anyone here from 2021?
