If your web service doesn't have any UI or interactive elements,go for API testing. If it has elements like images,titles etc which are interactive then use selenium. Using Java is optional, selenium supports various languages
It's not as simple as that you are saying and certification doesn't matter because it's just a piece of paper and most of the interviewers look for problem solving and in what are all the aspects we are considering

Many candidates have the same debate as you. Obviously, it is not that easy to switch the field directly.
But yes, If you want to switch careers, you need to learn the technology first that you want to enter.
