Gilbert O'Sullivan in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.
Gilbert O’Sullivan a great story teller with beautiful songs He is still out there today performing brilliantly in his 70s. If there is any song to bring a tear to your eye it is certainly this one!!😥
I can relate to this. Spending a lot of time alone before my marriage and after my divorce. But sometimes you have to need that time to yourself in order to figure everything out. It doesn't always help having someone influence you while you're in turmoil...
Most beautiful sad song ever!! Written by a man and so full of emotion and heart and openess inspite of the belief men cannot express their inner feelings. I think this songs puts that misconception to bed. Cant hear this understated song without filling up it so sums up the lonely existence of many human beings. Not an easy topic to write such an epic song about. salutations Gilbert
What a great reaction..!!! You listened and understood it. He blended a warm sunny morning, with a rainy afternoon and created a regular day in everyone's life....
I heard this song when I was 12 years old and it touched me deep down in my soyl...And made me cried.. It stills does today. Beautifully crafted lyrics... And such a wonderfully sad way to express the lonely feelings that we all go through at times.
Thanks for this nostalgic song Tre. I used to listen to this on the radio as a kid. While the lyrics are sad, there's still something so pretty about it. The '70s was a magical time for music. There were a lot of tunes you'd describe as "breezy."
I actually love Gilbert O’Sullivan’s work. It seems like he was really big in the 70's but became more obscure. But at the time he was as much of a pop star as Elton John. A bit shmaltzy but always listenable. Love the songs Claire, out of the question, matrimony, what’s in a kiss, if I don’t get you back again. He sounds a bit like Paul McCartney if Paul was less rock and more of a singer songwriter.
This one touches the soul! I played this a lot when I got divorced back in ‘99. Everything seemed dark and gloomy. Fast forward to the present and I’ve learned love my solitude. In fact, it gave me time to re-evaluate my approach to life and I’ve found happiness, success and love once again. This song still brings out emotions.
Tre, this is one of the greatest sad songs ever written. Try the original version. It actually went to number 1 on both the billboard top 100 and the adult contemporary 100. Gilbert was really big in England and Ireland too. He has some other good ones too. "Get down" is a cool song.
the man in the song basically killed himself - the first line tells you he climbed a building and threw himself off after everyone around him had gone - i first heard this as a child and i knew it was about loneliness and sadness - it is still profound to me now as when i first heard it as a small child - i remember feeling terribly upset after hearing him sing this song but what a timeless song
I can still remember the strange mix of emotions when I heard this as a kid, when it first played on AM radio. It's as if his life is so sad, telling it over a cheerful tune makes it all bearable somehow.
I suggest it's when we truly are alone that God is there to meet us. But you have to know Him first. He's not far away, we are. This is truly one of the great lost songs of the 70's. Ballads with heart and emotion are far gone.
MoMoMyPup10 I wouldn't call it a 'lost song'.... Anyone who loves and collects 70s hits should know this.. The 70s had some of the greatest ballads ever..
This song causes so many conflicting emotions in people. Brilliant song writer. I mean someone like Burt Bacharach was in awe of Gilbert O'Sullivan which is high praise indeed. Beautiful tune with the such downbeat lyrics. But it works.
Tre, you're on a roll, a lonely lonely sad sad roll....:-) Try Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" if you don't already have it queued up. And, Bobby Goldboro's "Honey" And, Paul McCartney's (The Beatles) "Eleanor Rigby"
Okay...after this song, you would have to listen to Hurricane Smith, "oh babe, what would you say"? It's been a long time since I've heard either one of these bubble gum songs, but I remember listening to them on transistor radio. Had the one ear earphone, so that I could enjoy these song uninterrupted....lol.

Claire is the other song well-known by this artist, but some people have a problem with it due to the lyrics, (which are perfectly innocent), being misinterpreted as something a lot more sinister than they actually are.
Every doctor's office in the world plays this 20 times a day...Since 1972......1, left at the altar, tries to throw himself off a tower....2, dad dies, 3. mom dies...
Gilbert O'Sullivan had many poignant songs and it always felt as if he was having a conversation with you. Check out the song about his dog who wont behave "Get Down"
wow, can't think of anyone who has reacted to Gilbert, nice one. Tre can I ask if you would react to - Eddi Reader , ae fond kiss . I know for sure that no one has ever reacted to this on youtube, so you would be the first fella....peace (ae is Scots for ' A' as in 'A find kiss')
Plus his other hit Matrimony and his other hit Get Down ad his other hit Oh ! Wakkey Do Wakky Day plus his other hit We Will plus his other hit No Matter How I Try plus his other hit Nothing Rjymed....lol
Nothing funny about this song. It's a beautiful but sad yet touching song about how somebody has knocks in life which make him feel alone. Feeling alone and being lonely are not the same thing.

I like the song 'Independent Air' by Gilbert O'Sullivan.
LOVED this song as a kid and it still touches my heart strings. Gonna guess 1972.
Yes, Feb 18th 72 in the UK.
And mine mate, I was 12 years old, it touched me then, even more now! This and "nothing rhymed"

One of my favorite songs...so beautiful and heart wrenching ..

I think we have all felt like this
at some point in our lives but
most of us get over it
Beautiful song

Geez this song is way darker than I remember as a kid.

Loved your reaction! I remember this song as a kid, just pulls the emotional strings. Real song writing!
I always thought it was a very well written song. Who hasn't had their heart broken in the youth of our years?
This one touches the soul!

Just because you're alone doesn't mean you have to be lonely.
Just because you are lonely does not mean you are on your own...

Haven't heard this for decades
Thank, Tre N. - this is my choice for the saddest song ever - but it's so beautiful! .
This was such a huge hit. How is it that some people have never heard it.
the man in the song basically killed himself - the first line tells you he climbed a building and threw himself off after everyone around him had gone - i first heard this as a child and i knew it was about loneliness and sadness - it is still profound to me now as when i first heard it as a small child - i remember feeling terribly upset after hearing him sing this song but what a timeless song
No quite. He said he promised to. That's how he felt at the time.
I can still remember the strange mix of emotions when I heard this as a kid, when it first played on AM radio. It's as if his life is so sad, telling it over a cheerful tune
makes it all bearable somehow.

@@agemoth 'lost' being you don't hear it anymore. Stations don't play it. It's lost.
MoMoMyPup10 oh, don't depress me! 59m people on TH-cam have watched the video, so that makes me glad! And I know many more will!
I love Gilbert, now this is music!
This song came out five months after my dad passed away. Still sends emotions
I'd forgot all about this little gem of a song - thanks for the great reaction video :)
He was 21 when he wrote this. Mom still alive. He’s a great storyteller. Beautiful and deeply sad song
This song causes so many conflicting emotions in people. Brilliant song writer. I mean someone like Burt Bacharach was in awe of Gilbert O'Sullivan which is high praise indeed. Beautiful tune with the such downbeat lyrics. But it works.

jim mayors Hahahaha, all good choices, lolllll
A good sad McCartney solo song would be Another Day
Was wondering what you would think about this depressing little tune lol lol great react...♡
Okay...after this song, you would have to listen to Hurricane Smith, "oh babe, what would you say"?

Awesome song Tre. Thanks.
Great review! Thanks!
Wow! You really dug deep for this one! Check out "Get Down" from him!
Without a doubt one of the saddest songs every written in history. People all over the world can relate to it.
Beautiful poignant song.
Enjoyed your reaction , my friend :)
Gilbert O'Sullivan/Claire
I agree, probably the saddest song I know..thanks Tre!
Strange phenomena
Now you need a little KC & The Sunshine Band in your life to bring you back up. That's the way I like it...uh huh, uh huh. 😆
A snappy little ditty about contemplated suicide and depression!
Every doctor's office in the world plays this 20 times a day...Since 1972......1, left at the altar, tries to throw himself off a tower....2, dad dies, 3. mom dies...
pat welch lol really?
Could Cat Stevens and Jim Croce be next on this playlist?
SAVAGE LYRICS
The audio sounded pretty bad on this version, but I've always loved this song since I was a little kid.
It sounded like a re-recorded version.
Gilbert O'Sullivan had many poignant songs and it always felt as if he was having a conversation with you.
Check out the song about his dog who wont behave "Get Down"
Get Down is not about a dog! It's about a woman who messes around with Gilbert but is still welcome to hang around.
Bob Dylan
Knocking on Heavens Door is a cool song
wow, can't think of anyone who has reacted to Gilbert, nice one. Tre can I ask if you would react to - Eddi Reader , ae fond kiss . I know for sure that no one has ever reacted to this on youtube, so you would be the first fella....peace (ae is Scots for ' A' as in 'A find kiss')
Please do Alan Parsons Project - Old and Wise; if you've not heard it.
His other hit Clair was a little more positive lol.
Plus his other hit Matrimony and his other hit Get Down ad his other hit Oh ! Wakkey Do Wakky Day plus his other hit We Will plus his other hit No Matter How I Try plus his other hit Nothing Rjymed....lol
The most upbeat sounding song with the most depressing lyrics, almost to the point that it's funny!
Nothing funny about this song. It's a beautiful but sad yet touching song about how somebody has knocks in life which make him feel alone. Feeling alone and being lonely are not the same thing.
This is why men need to be able to have emotions and not be teased or shamed about them he litteraly was contemplating suicide!
Kinda cheesy but it’s a classic
Good unflinching piece of writing.
Okay? One of the most depressing songs ever.. the guy just needed a case of leprosy to top it off!
Can you please react Papa by Paul Anka?
Awesome song bro, but I don't know if I like what saying.
