Very good lesson, precise with explanation of mechanics and subdivision of the quarter note, Was a new wrinkle for me and I didn't get it in a minute but after about 20 all fell into place. Thank you! :-)
Bob Craft Thank you for the kind words. As a drum instructor of 18 years, that's always great to hear that a student of drums is helped by my lessons. Thank you!
Good explanation but the quarter note is accented on the edge . The E is missing as a ghost note which is crucial to the groove. I was sure Purdie played it because it sounded like him. I thought Jim Gordon was the guy that did it. You could be right. This is the new Purdie shuffle as far as measuring if a drummer can do it right.
The original is slightly deceptive as there is echo on the high hat which hits exactly between the semiquavers...making it almost sound like maracas etc to me. It might be reverb or echo, I've never figured out the difference.
@@Nicksdrumlessons I am working on a drum cover right now on a song called, Wise Up by Amy Grant. This song has the same HH pattern. The difference between the two songs is that Wise Up, the back beat is on 2&4 and the tempo is 107 bpm. Wonderful Tonight is at 96 bpm. Suffice it to say, I am doing a lot of strength and conditioning exercises in order to get ready to record this song.
those ghost notes really make the groove too! Passively listening, it might sound simple, but I've been close to having an aneurysm trying to get them right while still keeping the hi hat's rhythm and dynamics steady.
you da boss, great explanations and ancillary information. Congratulations.
Thank you!
The best explanation of this groove I have seen on you tube. Thanks. Great lesson

Bro where is your ghost note
Thank you so much!
I agree with the others. The snare mostly ghost notes kind of Purdie Shuffle-ish
Thank you!
Where are the GHOSTNOTES?

Is there another name for the HH groove other than broken 16ths?
By its counts, "1" "&""ah""2" "&""ah""3" "&""ah""4" "&""ah"
@@Nicksdrumlessons I was hoping for something more short and succinct.

Total shame rhat this beat was wasted on such a crummy, smarmy pop song.
