- Hey everyone, this is a commentary I usually haven't done, but Ugly Betty the show is very dear to my heart. I love this show and I also get very frustrated with it from time to time. Ugly Betty was a masterpiece for it's time, but Betty deserved way better, so let's talk about it.

I kind of think they retconned it? I think in S2 or S3 Bradford outright says he had a good feeling about Betty, implying that he hired her not just because of her unconventional looks.
I think Hilda was envious of Betty because people valued her for her intelligence and tenacity. I think she took her feelings out on Betty because that is easier than going after all the people in her life who dont expect her to be anything more than a pretty face. We also have to remember that Hilda was a teen mom, so, emotionally, she's a bit stunted and immature. Having said that, A LOT of bad stuff happens to her in this show, so its kinda hard to stay mad at her. 😢
Yessss omg a video about Wilhelmina please there’s sooo much to discuss!! The fact that she’s a black senator’s daughter (so she was already blessed with wealth) yet still had to climb her way up to success (by beginning as an assistant for Fey Frickin Sommers), she was apparently a very skilled assistant just like Betty, and in another world Betty could’ve turned into her. Not to mention her past life as Wanda, how she might’ve played a key role in shaping her rebellious and insanely dangerous daughter, and her family. It’s interesting how she was born rich yet she still decided to work her way up in the industry as an assistant? Maybe she realised money wasn’t going to get her very far in the industry? Maybe her father simply forced her to get the job? Maybe her family didn’t believe she could make something of herself without her privilege and she wanted to prove them wrong? I’m not sure if there are answers to these questions, but it would’ve been cool to see the show exploring her past a bit more.
You’re calling things “problems” when they’re story choices. Everyone around Betty is there to illuminate her character and create conflict. Conflict is drama and drama is story.
although the ending was going in the direction of betty/daniel it was fairly open-ended tbh. like there was no kiss no real declaration from either party so I think the writers/creators did the best they could wrapping everything up given that the show was cancelled early, and like you said, the betty/daniel ship just hadn't had enough time to develop. ideally they would've gotten an extra season but oh well I liked that Betty at least was able to break away from Mode and make a name for herself
I agree that Daniel and Betty being together was so rushed at the end! It didn’t make it believable but I also feel like Henry was holding Betty back at times and I hate that he got another woman pregnant 😒
The show was cancelled abruptly and the episode count was reduced from 22 to 20. They had to tie things up quickly. The ending is pretty good all things considered.
I'm really sorry for saying this, but as a huge fan of the show I had already seen the original telenovela that it was based on prior to Ugly Betty, so I knew exactly the outcome. Betty like in the original was always meant to end up with Daniel, they're so opposites but opposites attract, the counterpart to Henry in the telenovela appears in the end at Betty & Armando's (Daniel) wedding. It's basically a Cinderella story and we all know she ends up with the prince and not the footman.
i 100% agree with your opinion on daniel and betty’s relationship at the end of s4. i feel like they really could’ve just gone with the route of daniel not being able to let her go because he’s lost so many people in his life already (his dad, renee, alexis and dj moving to france, molly) that he couldn’t bear to lose her as well. i would’ve must preferred that over like randomly inserting daniel having romantic feelings for betty in the last couple of episodes. it really did not make any sense to me. i was disappointed because i really appreciated their friendship in the earlier seasons
My sister and I just finished the show. Throughout the entire season we always felt Daniel was gonna fall in love with Betty. How couldn’t he? She was absolutely amazing to and for him.
I see them so alike to Mia and Sebastian in Lalaland. There is love but the best for them is not being a romantic couple.

The original telenovelas all end up with the boss falling in love with Betty. It was always going to end there.
I hated Henry so much with a passion because it always seemed like Betty had to adjust to whatever was going on with him but it was interesting to see a different approach
I see that happen always in real life so I felt no sympathy towards him, so sad how he ruined all chances to work out his relationship with Betty
Agreed. Positive changes for your partner ain't a bad thing. A complete 180 to fit their needs? That's too far. Say what you want about Daniel but he was never trying to truly 'change' Betty.

The ending with Betty and Daniel was designed to be open to interpretation whether they end up together or not. There’s really no wrong answer. A lot of people saw the romantic connection and potential between them and a lot of people didn’t. Each viewer views their relationship differently so the ending allows you to decide for yourself what happens next. At the end of the day they were the most popular ship to come out of the series and in every other Ugly Betty version they do end up together, so yeah.

I do think any criticism of Season 4 has to be taken with a pinch of salt. They heard about the cancelation so had to quickly scrape together THE ENDING. AN ENDING. Something anything. Always surprised me ABC even let them have 2 days shoot in London. They never gave the show the support it needed.
im so glad to find another henry supporter!! they really did him so wrong. i've even watched christopher gorham interviews where he expresses similar sentiments. i like betty/daniel tbh and i didn't think a romance between them would have been random at all, but i would have been so so satisfied with betty/henry if only the writers weren't determined to get him outta there >:/

Deborah, don't despair over the London finale, the 10 yr anniversary panel- Daniel explains that in the last episode he realizes that Betty is his equal- that he has learned so much from her-- that London is a new beginning for his life & their friendship...not necessarily the start of a romance. And - Geo- I never thought he was rude to Betty- I thought he elevated her & even had a familial type love for her-
The peripheral characters like Willi's boyfriend & Claire's prison mate, Hilda's men, Matt's parents, etc, etc. added a lotta pizzazz- the only sitcom I've watched except Sheldon in the last 30 yrs- just found & finished U.B. on Netflix- U.B. provided a great escape from the 8 yrs of daily war drums of MAGA politics What a relief - in contrast, U.B. showed the kinder side of human nature thru its roller coaster twists & turns encased in camp style comedy- Currently in withdrawal I think I'll need to watch it all again !
I love the show and have been rewatching it after 13yrs and its been a trip. I love it, it still holds up but it's a minefield of painful high school and college flashbacks for me. It's a litteral time capsule to the bygone world I spent my formative years in.
My god was the show fat phobic and no wonder I had an eating disorder then. I was the exact same size as Betty and was convinced back then that my life cannot start until I lose 50lbs and I lost 50lbs (the wong way) and found out the hard way that being underweight is not a ticket to happyness and acceptance but depression.
Please do an video on Wilhelmina Slater. She was absolutely fabulous and she was an interesting character and I loved her so much
Betty's saying bye to GIo was sad to me. He found happiness, I enjoyed their closure. Matt was cute when he glowed up after being cheated on. They really tried to hard to make her look as bad as possible. I didnt like Henry he was messing around with 2 girls and playing around with Betty's feelings. It was almost annoying.

Great overview, I just finished the show and I loved it but these points were awesome. Sidenote: Matt is going to Botswana I believe, they talk about it a ton earlier in the "shipped to Africa" episode

I think this show suffered in the third and fourth season because of the writers strike. The fourth season was all over the place
here's some lore: my sister was in the same class of Gio's(the actor) actual niece! lmao I remember she found out that my sister watches the show and that's when she told her. The world is truly small.
I love how you said there is no chemistry between Betty and Daniel!!! I 100% agree! I know people wanted them to be together, but I just never saw it.

Christina fan here! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that blue blazer Betty's wearing at 11:00minutes was one that Christina sent to her from when she moves back to Scotland. I forget when Hilda shares the package with Betty but you see Betty glance at it around 37:10 in Butterfly Effect P2 and say she's considering a new look.
Also, I agree - Betty & Daniel romantically don't make sense. I was rooting for Daniel and Amanda. Amanda seems to provide some guidance (intentional or not) that helps Daniel and you see them reconnecting through some scenes in season 4.
The show definately needs to come back and tie up loose ends...boyfriend in Africa for 6 months and she wrote him off after she told him to 'get a life' ???? Boss leaves family company after fighting for it ? that was very unimaginative . Amanda and Mark are ment to be annoying coworkers (we all have them) not friends, Sister was too much controling over who she dated
I actually loved Gio because he saw Betty for what she could be and for who she was. She needed someone to challenge her. I also kinda love the grumpy dude with a super positive girl. I feel like all the other relationships were crazy toxic not that there wasn't any toxicity in the Geo Betty dinamic.

Second generation immigrant from the United States and it’s so insane seeing people online jump to appreciate (and someone fetishize) people from my ethnicity (and other ethnicities) when up until then we were never once considered beautiful (unless you were impossibly beautiful and/or white passing or racially ambiguous).
And it really is your parents having to reassure you that you are beautiful, because even your own peers don’t find you beautiful. Boys will not find you pretty because they’re raised in a society where white is beautiful. And girls will not look to each other for beauty but instead look out of the community towards white American girls, who felt like they were the only pretty ones. I remember being a kid in the 2000s knowing it was wrong to be saying white girls are the pretty ones. But then every main character, doll, adult tv drama, movie, love interest, cosmetic and fashion commercial had white girls.
It makes me wonder what its like go to grow up in a community where the majority of people look like you. Like how it is for white people where I live and my parents back in our home country. My view of what beauty is would be so much less colonized than it is now.
I always thought I was crazy for feeling this way and it would make me feel guilty

Yeah I agree that the ending could've been done better. However, in the original adaptation of Ugly Betty (Betty La Fea; a telenovela), Betty is supposed to end up in a relationship with her boss & they live happily ever after. He slowly starts to see past Betty's looks & falls in love with who she is, even before the makeover.
I really wanted yo get behind henry but he just necer sat right with me! Like I get he was pretty much baby trapped by charlie but he did choose her over betty and even supportef chatlie while she treated betty like a doormat there to serve her due yo her pregnancy. I didnt see him stick up for her once even though he had the opportunity to many times. He was just a big red flag for me. I adored her and gio together but betty and daniel are just top tier together. They push each other to be better and do better and thats what I think betty really needed in a relationship ❤❤
PLEASE make a video about Wilhelmina. She’s one of the best characters in TV history.

I liked the Daniel and Betty ship. I think all her other love interest were for her character development. I do agree with the fact that Daniel was a man child but at the end he seemed become more competent. Also through the show we saw Daniel recognizing his faults and trying to rectify them because Betty was his moral compass. One of Betty’s main traits was to help even when it wasn’t needed or wanted, Daniel always needed her help even if he didn’t ask for it, this aspect of Betty’s character led to some frustrations but with Daniel it was always accepted. Finally, Daniel’s mom shipped them from the beginning and Daniel saw his mom’s opinion as the most important because growing up she was the only one there for him.
IDK I really loved Matt, he was my fav out of others. both matt and betty were getting their character growth through the relationship
I love Matt, too. I think if he had met her earlier, they would have been better. Early show betty would have adored him. Betty, in the later seasons kinda tolerated him.

Their relationship is weird to me. Betty really likes him, but not more than Henry and cheats on him. Matt loves her, but he loves a lot of things, he has a new passion every other week. Ultimately he dumps her in season 4 because he was bored with his life and she gets over it pretty quickly. It’s not a deep relationship when you really get down to it.
@@NightRises234 well it had some problems with writing, it seems to me, though I could see them being endgame. not sure why the writers decided to pull that thing with Henry and cheating, that's where the problems started... even if she still had feelings for Henry I don't really see Betty as a person who would cheat. eh. but that's just my opinion😄

I found "ugly betty" attractive
Personally I don't believe Marc would stoop low enough to be treating Betty the way he does after her promotion because she's Latina, although Marc really is an asshole and isn't a true friend like Christina (despite when she betrays Betty that one time :/). Marc was treated pretty poorly for the majority of his life and had to work hard to barely get into his assistant job to Wilhelmina for 4 year!. I really do think he is just jealous how much quicker Betty managed to move up and Betty getting what seemed to be Marcs spot in Y.E.T.I purely because of her Ethnic decent. (granted Betty deserved the spot regardless) It would suck to anyone losing your only chance at an application because of something completely out of his control. Marc although not coming from a extremely poor upbringing like Betty and her family. He has had a terrible life up to the point of Betty meeting him, he's shown to be incredibly jealous both with his relationship choices and with Betty even if he wouldn't dare say it out loud. Betty is everything Marc wants to be in a person and he hates her for it.

season 4 was a mess betty basically turned into willamena but everyone liked her so it was ok. Daniel became a better amn but jesus christ he needs to change his name to peter parker. Willamena, amanda and Mark became like... real people it made me feel like the show was secretly actually. Betty the show deserved better betty herself deserved a better character arc, betty did not deserve better everyone else did.

I’m not at the end but I’m going to disagree. I agree with all the toxic parts but the Latinx versions are better and don’t make the love story between Betty and Daniel so abrupt. Also in the original Daniel’s dad hires Betty because of her stellar resume! And Daniel is disappointed because he’s not hot.

Especially what happened when she tried applying for Y.E.T.I. Her submission was last minute and got accepted and not Marc who had worked for his application for three months and during their talk.

But how was that Betty’s fault? If he didn’t get accepted then maybe he could try again and not be so mean. That just goes to show you how jealous he was of her.

Instead of tring to portay US as prejudice why not say, ' no matter what culture you come from , when you come from poverty its hard to move up', also many Doctors lawyers , rich students live in Queens , US is made up of many cultures and even White people have diverse backgrounds.

@@bituinl If you watch the original telenovela, there was no underage gay boy, and certainly no trans brother. Those characters were shoehorned into this series.
Ugly Betty was ahead of its time. It was not as common back then as it is today to take existing properties and shoehorn in LGBTQ characters.

Listen cheaters can be forgiven if they show genuine remorse and f! ght to win you back, we all make mistakes n we all deserve second chances ..however a third chance ...nah
