    He is absolutely right. In the last two years I have lost a husband and a job and I had no idea either was coming so I am no longer going to plan my life around either of those things. There is NO security so I am renting out my house (I just bought it 6 months ago as an investment) and I am buying a 26 ft. trailer to live in and travel in. For now I will still be working full time but I will be traveling as much as I can until I can retire in a couple of years. Living in the trailer and renting out my house will allow me to save much quicker to retire earlier. I'm so excited!!

    I don"t know about bad advice, but if you have a travel trailer, or a fifth wheel, always do a quick hand touch of your wheels, or wheel bearing covers, whenever you stop! If you are driving for even an hour, heat in these areas are an indication of a potential future problem that can easily be avoided. If one wheel is considerably hotter than the rest, it's probably a bearing needing attention.

    • @EnjoyTheJourneyLife
      @EnjoyTheJourneyLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Brian! Great advice! - Tom

    • @dalewatkins9889
      @dalewatkins9889 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with this, in that I had a bearing go in a trailer once, and the 'tow' was extremely expensive, and it happened at night as well, making it that much more difficult! I now make periodic stops along the way, and just feel around the wheel area close to where the bearings sit to make sure they are only warm, and not hot.

    • @northerniltree
      @northerniltree 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Damn fine advice. So, always check tire condition and pressure, and service those wheel bearings at regular intervals!

Hope to see you out there! Every body says to us finally, you’ve been talking about this forever! We’ve been camping all our lives and we were cross country tractor trailer drivers for a few years. Ppl think you're nuts bc society norm in western culture is to have a large house, gas guzzling SUV, raise kids, college, etc. Whereas in other cultures, minimal is best. Tiny house, tiny car, like in Japan. Take a diamond, just a bunch of carbon. But western females have been brainwashed to cherish them.

    10:49 this is great, I found it quite inspirational. I really like how you encourage people with a passion to explore this style of life, that they don't have to wait. You explain starting with debt, changing enabling relationships to positive, and manifesting a life change as soon as you can: as soon as you "should" might disappear.

    And could you help me understand why some people
    Go with pulling a 5th wheel vs getting a motor home ?
    Thank you

    • @Molly_Belle
      @Molly_Belle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your motor home breaks down you have no place to stay if it's in the shop. No, vehicle and no place to stay. Also, if you have to go anywhere and don't have another vehicle, you have to break camp. Motor homes are also usually very expensive. I used to live in a tiny motor home from the 60's when I traveled with my family who logged. We did have an extra driving vehicle though. Hope this helps:-). Oh, also a 5th wheel pulls down on the back of your truck so should be a super duty and diesel. You need to be able to stop all that weight.

    Me and the wife are taking the next 6yrs to plan and aquire everything we need. Truck truckbed camper and an offroad cargo trailer. This will let us make sure the truck is good to go the trailer is setup for extra water/food storage tie downs for my Harley and to set it up as a major solar generator for running the RV. We choose the 6yr timeframe to give us the setup time etc and to make sure the vehicle is all good and the rv systems can be tested and repaired replaced or modified to our needs.

    Hi, I wanted to add my two cents to your video....I’ve done things a bit differently. Started in a typical living situation...house, bills, job and stress. I sold everything I could and moved to a northern small village, bought some property with run down and damaged buildings on the land. I tore down the shack and built a 16x14 tiny house. I experienced living in this tiny house for two and a half years which included two winters of -40 or colder weather. I did enjoy myself living off grid with wood heat and no running water....socially the village was quite toxic and unhealthy. I knew I needed out, so again I sold everything I didn’t need and moved into my truck. I am currently saving up money to buy a travel trailer. When I started researching tiny home off grid living I heard the same thing...don’t have a debt load. So, I did that, resolved my debts and for the time I lived off grid...I’ve learned how to live cheaper and have learned that consumerism is a myth.., but I do agree you can have a debt as long as you are paying it off. I love the idea of having multiple income sources...that’s brilliant. I like that you recommend buying a smaller rv to make sure you love the new lifestyle....can’t wait to watch your next video. Cheers

    As an idea for fellow travelers, I am 70 years old and getting ready to sell out. I’m fortunate that my daughter and her family have enough land to allow me to build a 3 car garage apartment beside their house. I’m keeping my RV, my boat and my motorcycle and whatever will fit in the apartment, that’s it. I’ll have a safe place to come back to between travels and a home in my later years, and they’ll have someone to watch the kids or dog when they travel. This is a win, win for us.

    I've thoroughly enjoyed this video! I'm currently enjoying the planning stage as the idea occurred to me as a possible personal choice just over a month ago. Planning is one of my favorite past-times, making lists, deciding on the best options for me and choosing from those. I LOVE to do research; enjoy fitting what is available into my personal parameters and being satisfied with my selections. Being a short little old lady, I know the smallest possible unit that I can manage yet will fit my life style loves will be my first priority. Being a divorced little old lady, I know I will have to find something with an equally manageable financial footprint! Like falling in love, there's no rush; when it happens, it happens.

    I been in a class a for every summer last 5 years I'm semi retired and a tip I offer don't pay big rv bills but parts and do yourself I learned how deal. With all that came on. Have a cabinet dedicated to repair materials and tools. Keep up your roof inspection every 90 days and anytime you rub a branch or just drive a long stretch keep vents intakes clean inspect seals and gaskets often don't over fill you black water always use RV toilet paper lots of diy ways to deoderkze don't use brand name thank treatments. Check you oil and cooling system on engine and generator often keep insides dry of condensate wipe daily in cooler months wash fins on AC annually. Check air in tires often. Have a CO2 detector inspect prpanne lines annual and if ever you smell shut down main and find out were ? Keep rodents out block every hole wire pot scrubbers work to seal holes they won't chew it in storage lots moth balls deters them have road side assistance and a good spAre and safety flairs and safety vest do daily cleaning and drying never let things get ahead of you there my 10 cents worth. It can be so fun sometimes you feel cramped just re sort , get rid of what you don't need out always think minimal is best. Cook outside often and eat healthy. Good luck

      I'll be going on the road soon. I lived in a 16ft. camper trailer in an RV campground for a year. Had to use an outhouse, go to the clubhouse for showers, kept food in a cooler outside in winter, soda by the door (it stayed cold in winter) and cooked outside unless weather didn't allow it. On 4th of July, had a party and fed 6 people from the fire, steak, dogs, burgers, potatoes in the coals, corn on the cob from the grill. Of course, macaroni and potato salad cooked up in the morning and mixed up to cool in the ice chest. I loved it! Me and my 4 (8, now) kitties enjoyed the quiet and solitude. If I wanted company, there was always someone to chat with. That was 19 years ago, and I can't wait to leave city living! Thanks for those tips! ✌💖😸

    I also agree with not needing to be debt free first. My husband and I are still in debt. Our original plan was to wait until we were debt free, but it also didn't make sense to keep putting our dreams on hold. Especially when living in the RV full time actually saves us money! We paid off close to $200K before we decided to start RVing full time. We still have about $35k left to pay off. But we are managing our payments fine, and bough our trailer used for cash. My only regret is that we didn't do this sooner!

      how are you supporting yourselves in your fulltime RV life and paying off debt? Did you consolidate your debt first?

    • @thezilinskilife
      @thezilinskilife 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We paid off most of the debt we could before starting the RV life. What we had left we did consolidate to make the payments more manageable. The first year of living in our RV my husband is still working, which will allow us to pay off the remaining debt. His jobs frequently change location, so living in the RV actually works out really well right now. :)

      We did thinks a little differently...mainly that we where already debt free, plus had our home paid for and investments....but, my wife seems to think that we need X amount of $$ in the bank for when we get old to the point where we need someone to care for us, and in our neck of the woods...full care is $5K - 6K per month...which is a ridiculous amount of money, but that was her hold up. Then, we had a neighbour pass away in his sleep at 60 years old, and it made my wife think...that maybe we should get an RV (I had been looking for 2 years prior) and at least 'part-time' and see how we make out, although, we had been 'camping' and to a lesser degree RVed for 30 years previous. So, we ended up getting an older Class A diesel pusher, that is comfortable, lots of room inside and to bring things along, and we pull our car behind for use when we are parked for longer periods! So far, we're not set up for long periods of boon-docking or dry camping, as we just have 4 golf cart 6 volt batteries that need updating (our motorhome has a residential fridge that eats up batteries pretty quickly) and a solar array eventually. As it is, I am older than my wife, so I like to relax, go for walks or hikes, play pickle ball and such, but my wife can't sit still, and is extremely active, so we'll start off going to RV Resorts with lots of activities/amenities (expensive!) and as the years pass, we may slow down, and do more dry camping then, as there are just SO many places to do this these days, where there is a huge saving in not paying for overnight stays! One does need to 'budget' unless you have an unlimited supply of funds, but once out there, it makes you wonder why you didn't do it sooner indeed! Our 'main' hold back now, is being close to our grandkids, as it's hard being away from them for long periods, missing out on their growth and activities they now enjoy. There's 'always' something to hold you back, and not always easy to break through that mental block, but hey....you deserve to enjoy after all those years of working (how I look at it)!

    My husband and I are not full-timers. We purchased a Class C motorhome at the end of last year and have made several trips in it including an 8-week trip to NC this year. We own our home outright, so our only debt is our motorhome. I would love to full-time but my husband wouldn't. He really enjoys our time traveling or just getting away to the local National Forest campground. In fact, we just got back from there and have reservations for another 10 days in a week from now. His thing is, he worked really hard to have this home and all his "stuff" and he wants that security. So for now, we have a home base and we have our grandson take care of it when we're gone. It's working so far.

      Letting go of what you have worked a lifetime for isn't an easy thing to do especially when you see what it's worth to other people in on line sales or an auction, it inspired me to quit collecting "things". I do agree a home base is a wonderful thing and we're going to keep ours initially as well but maybe down the road we'll see it as an unnecessary expense and a major one at that.

      This is the way most rvers do it. It eliminates the heartbreak of bad decisions that can be devastating in the future. Living in the here and now is great but even when you're older you still need a safety net when life changes quickly.

    • @dalewatkins9889
      @dalewatkins9889 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're in a similar situation Carol, in that we own our home, and just have a motorhome payment that is easily handled, of which we could pay off if we wished, but our investments make a higher interest than what we'd pay on interest on the MH loan. We actually just got our Class A diesel pusher one year ago, so we got in several local trips last year, had a wonderful local weekend trip to an RV park with our two daughters and 5 grandkids, where the kids LOVED the pool, and although it was a little crowded in the motorhome, they're memories we'll have forever! It's more the 'missing the kids' that holds us back from going for extra long periods, although we are currently thinking of heading out soon for a couple of months (hopefully). I too like 'all my stuff' but I really do need to downsize some of it, as when I realize some of it I haven't used in a good long time, it seems senseless to be keeping it. We have one daughter going through a divorce situation at this time (and her two kids) which are living with us (always have to help out as a parent) so they can 'house-sit' for now, which is nice as well. These days we can all Skype or FaceTime, so that all helps while being away for longer periods. I personally love meeting new people and learning from others, so the lifestyle works well for me, plus I'd prefer to be where it's warmer, as living here in Canada can be a lengthy cold periods some years. :)

    What a journey it's been with y'all! The first take on this video was made 3 days after I found it and decided to start RV'ing part time ! I've been following y'all ever since! 5 weeks and counting before step 1 of my adventure ! By the tons of research that comes along with full time RV living research over time it revealed a huge passion about homesteading ! In order to home stead ya got to have money for land ! In order to save money for land I had to figure out how to reduce expenses! And... I'm going to do that by living in a pop up camper during warm seasons in the south ! I will have a home base - SC.. but still my kids and I are going to have hella adventures checking out state parks low cost camp grounds etc! 300 bucks a month all utilities! For most campgrounds anyways.. I'm lucky to have a sister let us "live" with her and during the cold days which are few and far between we will be "home" but man, am I looking forward to this adventure ! By sticking to a very strict budget I will save exactly what I need for 1 acre of land and a mobile home! No more rent... I already had a remote job that I will be incorporating. All this started with THIS VIDEO , to fight the fear of change I watch THIS VIDEO. Thank you Lord Fartwat, I mean Farquat, I mean Tom lol. You to Cheri!!! Funny how this planning stages has developed. And you're right it was the best part of the journey. 5 weeks- and I'm moving over 700 miles to the South to begin ! First RV is a pop up camper.. fell in love with those. Thank y'all...my fellow Law of Attraction homies- hope to meet y'all some day!

I I say but why not? I can retire now, take early social security, I have an actual pension and plan on going small and lite to keep costs down. I've a 10 year old Dodge Ram1500 4x4 with low miles and gentle use. I plan on trying to keep the trailer gross weight to around 3000 lbs, about half the trucks towing capacity to try and extend its life as long as possible. I'm laid back and usually deal with set backs pretty well. And I LOVE the outdoors! Hope to see you out there!

    Great tips! I've been full time traveling for 8 months now. I did want to be debt free but it didn't work out that way. I am paying on my Rv and I have my own business and I carry debt associated with that. My biggest expense has been gas. My rv has really poor mileage and I've done a lot of traveling. Its difficult when most of your family is east but you prefer to be west, especially for boondocking opportunities. I could probably save a lot more money if stayed in one place, but there's no joy in that for me.

    Love your videos. My countdown is on. One month to go! I'm moving from France to R V in the US so I can only bring what I can fit in a large suitcase (30kgs). It's a difficult process but for the past month I have been putting in the suitcase what I use everyday, and not what extra stuff I don't use! Of course I will need to buy some larger items and must haves when I get there, but it seems a good way to only bring what you need at first, until you see what else is necessary. I'm also renting 2 different sized RVs from Cruise America to see which suits me best. At $350 a week plus fuel its not a big investment before spending a lot of money not knowing. Also they sell off their refurbished ex rentals (2014-2016) models and give back up to $3000 of the rental money back if you buy, plus a warranty. I'll let you know how that turns out. ~ theaussiegypsy.

      Keep watching the TH-cam video's, as there is an enormous amount of great information for all RVers. I've been following a host of full-timers for a few years now, and the lifestyle looks awesome, but you do have to plan, in that if you are going to boon-dock or dry camp to save $$ on fees, you will need good batteries and/or some solar power. Best of luck on your adventure/journey, as it can be super rewarding!

    I just bought my a travel trailer and that was the first time I had ever even been inside one. I haven't even picked it up yet but I did do extensive research on what I wanted and I'm very pleased with my decision. That being said, I am going full time on the road to experience my life and this is definitely exciting but a bit intimidating so I turned to TH-cam for tips. After hours of not so helpful videos, I found this one which I thoroughly enjoyed and is full of links and suggestions I will definitely follow up on. Very enlightening, very educational and very enjoyable. Thanks Tom I have subscribed to your channel, will be looking at your other videos and as this was kind of spur of the moment for me, I am feeling so much better and relaxed about taking off as well as more prepared mentally. Financially what I should be prepared for was another subject I found quite helpful. I strongly suggest to anyone who is new at this, as I am, and is about to embark on a new way of life, to watch this video and see if it can help you too. Thank you for the great information as I really needed to hear some it and can use all of it.

    My belief is there are different stages of life and I try to adhere to them myself. After the kids move out, the focus shifts to paying off debt and accumulating enough savings so when you do retire you don't have to worry about going back to work or pinching pennies to do the amount of traveling you want to do. Along the way you take shorter excursions and see how you like this lifestyle, it's got upsides and downsides, it's not paradise. My first responsibility is to my family and society in general is not to be a financial drain to them because someone working a job they hate, will have to pay additional taxes to keep me alive. Take care and good luck but I recommend people think long and hard before jumping in with both feet on this lifestyle.

      Thanks for your comments, but we definitely disagree. Most of what you mentioned above sounds like programming. You are accepting societies or the governments way of living. We are not promoting being irresponsible, but we are promoting living the life you want and creating it the way you want to make it, NOW! And that doesn’t have to be when you retire. When it could be too late. - Tom

      EnjoyTheJourney.Life, stop and think about in a larger context. If everyone did this, who would come out and repair your rv when your broken down in the middle of Wyoming or maybe your doctor is out rv'ing when you need emergency surgery to save your life. We should thank the everyday worker rather then look down and feel sorry for them. I have a small class b campervan and love it but not as much as our paid off house in a nice safe neighborhood. My wife and I enjoy the numerous biking and hiking trails all around us. Yes we love to get out and see this beautiful country but you sometimes don't realize how good you have it until you go some where else. It's all about a balance in life, it's not all just living in your rv or house full time but enjoying both, yes you can have the best of both worlds, they both have their plus's and minus's. Take care.

      Totally agree about Virginia. I was stationed there in the late 80s with the Navy and hated it. They made me remove the tinting on my truck windows because it was too dark. the truck had the tinting already when i bought it in California. Tried to explain it wasnt my choice to move there and would be leaving in 2-3 years but they wouldn't relent. Also had to stop using my radar detector.

I didn’t even put it on the car nor did I know there was such a thing as medical tint! Such a mess. Nearly every ticket I got growing up just got thrown out in court. Such a waste of tax payer dollars and resources. Half their police force is just sitting in court everyday to provide testimony for the tons of traffic citations they issue for no reason.

    My dad had a 1982 Honda Gold Wing that he gave to me because it wasn't being used. He bought a new camper he was gonna use to travel the country which he sold this year because it wasn't being used. He's been looking at summer homes for years so he can retire by the lake but never buys anything. He's looking at apartments for retirement for when he "can't take care of the house any more" but the only one he's bought so far was for my brother to live in while studying IT. He's been talking about selling the house for about 15 years now but he never does.
    My dad is 71 years old and still works almost every single day as a truck driver. "When I retire" is him in a nutshell.
    Well, I'm not making his mistake. As soon as I can I'm going full-time RV living. No more rent, internet subscription, power bill, nothing. No more buying electricity from some company that charges you three times what the electricity actually costs. No more bloated ISP costs and no more paying $350 a month for a one room apartment that's still three times bigger than what I need. No more being reliant upon corporations or landlords except in a very limited and basic capacity.
    It's just gonna be me paying for the basic things I need to keep the RV running, to stay alive, and be free.

    Been thinking about this for a while. My challenge is I have hobbies that require equipment. This is sometimes a seasonal thing but these things require storage.
    Hunting: 4 wheeler, weapons, ammo, the food you acquire needs freezer space, and storage.
    Trapping: Traps, tools, equipment to make my own leather and clothing.
    Reloading: reloading press, brass, storage of black powder,
    Fishing: boat, motor, rods, reals, food storage of fish, etc.
    Hiking: Backpacks, and all the gear like stoves etc.
    Biking: Bike, tools to fix, etc.
    This is just an example of the things I ponder on a regular bases. How can I do both?
    Lol, even though my daughter is a vegan, I got to have meat, which is primarily from what I take in the wilderness.

    Being in debt, if anything, is a reason to go full time, not a reason to not to. Especially for people who have limited wealth anyway - go with a van. Buy a nice one (if not crazy nice) and do a basic conversion and you can live off very small amounts of money while paying down your debt. In fact, it may make sense to add to your debt by buying the RV or van on finance, the total monthly cost may still turn out lower than paying an expensive rent. Of course, these decisions are all individual.

Your assuming we all have a multi-stream income?, Are you not aware that allot of us are not internet savvy and Business minded with a degree on accounting? really? Most people resorting to RV retirement are doing it to avoid giving up 60% of their fixed income to a rent bill or mortgage. DEBT can destroy the numbers when pushing the pen with a meager income, Dude, you would not be living the way you are on a 25,000 a year income with a debt bill, come on.
