  • Probably the most photogenic stop on SafariLife so far - Nxai Pan South Camp is really a photographer’s paradise where atmospheric storm lighting and dramatic cloud formations combine with a wide open landscape.
    Prints
Adam shot some of his favourite shots of the trip on the leg of the journey including “When the Heavens Open” - capturing the moment a sunray broke through the clouds to put a spotlight on a giraffe at the waterhole, “Nxai Pan Sunrise” - capturing some of the first herds of zebra to arrive for the second biggest migrations in Africa and “Nxai Pan Downpour” - capturing a herd of elephants with a dramatic storm brewing in the background. Remember to email us on sales@rabinowitz-photography.com if you would like more information about buying a limited edition photograph from Adam’s collection.
    Nxai Pan National Park
Combining the 39,000km2 Makgadikgadi (coming up) and 21,000km2 Nxai Pan reserves has created a vast, unfenced park about the size of Portugal. It's a 4x4 country that requires cautious driving. But nothing our Toyota Landcruiser Prado VXL could not handle (even once the rains turned roads into rivers.
    Nxai Pan South Camp
Compared to the wild campsite of last week’s episode (staying at Baines’ Baobabs), Nxai Pan’s South Camp is a welcome change - with large campsite, well-maintained ablution blocks and friendly staff who even man a small supply shop. The only tricky part is getting to South Camp - with the route taking you along a very long stretch of sandy road - not for the faint-hearted.
Nxai Pan - Weather and Climate
We visited Nxai Pan mid-December. Nxai Pan has a well-defined dry (April to October) and wet (November to March) seasons, as well as a hot, desert climate. As the dry season progresses, the park becomes more and more parched, with the heat reaching its peak in October. When the rains break, signaling the beginning of the wet season, it cools down immediately.
Pro’s for visiting during this time include that many animals migrate to the pans, including large herds of zebras and wildebeest, a lot of the herbivores give birth to their young and this also means predators are numerous. Unfortunately it also means it is very hot, the roads become boggy and afternoon showers will sometimes interfere with your plans.

Good advertising for Botswana, and as always, patience is rewarded when it comes to photography!

I loved Nxai Pan! And the Makgadikgadi episodes coming up show how great that park is too - even in the rainy season

It has been really fun going through those memories while the country has been in Corona lockdown 😊We get beautiful sunsets with zebra's in Makgadikgadi too - thats our next destination

That giraffe shot @6:49 is amazing. It gets my vote for the best image you've shown so far.
I'm curious to see how this series ends. (I've got a handful of episodes left.) The first 45 days generated 29 episodes. The second 45 days appears to have resulted in less than 10 episodes--though this includes some of my favorites.
