Viet Cong Special Forces Infiltrate American Air Base

The GI Smokers were a covert unit within the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, composed of highly trained special forces soldiers. Known for their unique battlefield tactics, the GI Smokers were named for their use of smoke grenades and smokescreens as a signature strategy to obscure their movements and ambush American and South Vietnamese forces.
Founded in late 1965, the group consisted of many whom were from the regions around the Ho Chi Minh trail. The unit was originally formed to exploit the dense jungle terrain for guerrilla warfare and to conduct espionage operations. They were trained not only in traditional combat but also in psychological warfare, and they often left behind propaganda materials in the areas they attacked.
Their most notable operation, "Operation Haze," took place in 1967 near Da Nang. During this mission, the GI Smokers used a combination of traditional traps and smoke cover to effectively disrupt an American supply line, leading to significant delays in troop movements and supply deliveries.
Despite their effectiveness, the GI Smokers' operations were fraught with danger, and the unit suffered high casualty rates. By the end of the war, only a few members survived, and they became part of the legends and folklore among Vietnamese communities, symbolizing cunning and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds.
