Here’s what I’ve gathered so far: the chickens last for 10 shots of their eggs, they have no despawn timer. After they shoot 10 eggs, they overheat and drop cooked chicken which heals 1 heart each. Spawning a chicken in another chicken creates a baby chicken because it’s a creative mode spawn egg. Those baby chickens can grow up, but the grown chickens don’t act as turrets or drop eggs (or any item), so they are useless.

the chicken is not on a timer, it just has a certain amount of times it shoots before it dies.
if you play on pernicious, sometimes seeds spawn on the diamond islands, maybe you could breed the chickens.
