I live in Pike County Kentucky, it is thought about every spring during Hillbilly Days. A 3 day festival where fun is had about past events. Both Hatfields & McCoy's join in to relive past events. It's all for fun & raises money for Shriners helping crippled children. Been canceled last 2 years due to Covid, but hoping for next year. A nice event for families.

I remember when I was in a treatment center in Alabama. I met a real McCoy and he was confirmed to be a real McCoy by the treatment center. His name is Shawn McCoy. He was about 13 at the time in about 2008/9. The center actually paid for both families and come and speak their history and they agreed that their genetics did play a huge part, and was agreed that the illness they had played the biggest part. When we were able to meet both sides of the family it was very interesting. They dont own the land they use to have, in fact they sold it off in the early 1900s, but have a massive amount of their ancestors possessions. They even have some of their old guns, but have donated most of them to museums. They talked about also what caused the freud and it wasn't just a pig and a wedding. I was happy to meet both families.

The Hatfield's where fairly wealthy for the area and time. They paid to legally own the land. That is the cause of the feud

Pretty much every single major animation studio had at least a few shorts dedicated to either the Hatfields and McCoys directly, or one of their main characters wandering into the feud by accident. Its amazing that a history so full of murder and tragedy was seen as 'yeah, this'll make a great cartoon for kids!'.

    • @TakeMinamoto

the most recent example is from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic... although it makes more sense to portray the feud in that show, as the point of the episode was to depict how easily simple arguments can escalate, as none of the descendants of the families knew exactly why they were fighting... the feud was just a frame of reference for a moral, instead of just an easy joke, so I think it gets a pass in that regard
I mean, family feuds (and the Romeo & Juliet plots that sometimes accompany them) are a great way to show kids how easy it is to start a fight, and how dumb it is to keep the fight going, and also to show that the adults can and will be wrong at times... also to show how the younger generation's goal should be to solve things as peacefully as possible, or to find a different solution, not to blindly follow their parents' mistakes

The "feud" might have been used to depreciate or slander Appalachian people in general. Perhaps in the furtherance of exploiting the Appalachian people in such acts as taking their property away from them as in forging title documents. Post Civil War era.

That’s why I never knew I was a Hatfield till I was older in like middle high school I had to learn it from my dad. I wish I got to knew my paternal grandpa better.

My local newspaper published a story that a current day male relative had been diagnosed with a mental illness. Through his therapy they went back and investigated their mentality and it was surmised that the mental illness was passed down through the generations.
