Now that you showed it in detail I can see the force the riders and the bike take on that landing . Omg gutted about Rachel and hope she will make her full recovery quickly and smoothly
The worse part about that type of achilles injury is that you initially you think you can walk it off and you make it worse. A couple seconds later, the real pain starts, and then the swelling. For Rachel, as soon as she knew something was amiss, she unclipped her foot, tried to stretch it out, but realized that was a bad idea, and limp footed it down the track. I hope she heals up soon, she's quite the warrior and inspiration for Janeen and I. If it weren't for Rachel, Janeen would have never purchased a mountain bike for herself. Thank you for sharing. Your videos are spot on coupled with great commentary. Good job!
Thanks for another top vid Ben. Looking at both of the drops Rach was quite far back on her bike when landing. The slow mo video from front on - look how far below the pedal her heel is, I've done that off a smaller drop and it hurt, but luckily I didn't damage anything. With her weight that far back it will all be on that back leg too which obviously doubles the force on the tendon. Get well soon Rachel, looking forward to seeing you smashing the championship next year!
That’s a horrible injury, suffered same thing myself years ago and it took at least twelve months before the strength and dexterity was anything like it was before. Really hope she doesn’t push things too fast in her recovery,it really doesn’t take much to end up back to square one. Patience is key . Gutted for the kid.
I have torn/shredded an ACL and I would say it's likely over time one suffers numerous minor tears and we learn to deal with the minor pain until that one load that just overcomes what is left. I don't believe the tendon has to be over extended just a higher shock load than what it can take. Hopefully she can return but it would not surprise me if she does not especially with what all the Atherton's have going on. As far as the landing goes. It is what it is so racers need to deal with it or go around.
If you look ever-so closely at the video, her right foot appears a little further back, heel hanging off the pedal possibly a bit more than usual...case the landing leaning back, and once all the suspension is used up, all that force extends down into her lower limbs causing sudden dorsiflexion of the foot...Toe still on the pedal and the heal forcefully shoved downward towards the ground and... and "Pop" goes the weasel...
@@WiscoMTB37 not sure about UCI, but for USA cycling, i believe weed is now allowed outside of competition. so there's a threshold amount you can have in your blood and if you smoked weed in the last 24 hours before your test, you will fail a drug test. but smoking a week before or so isnt going to cause a ban.
Good vid mate! And Ouccccccccccccchhhhhhhhhhhh! Poor Rach! I partly injured an achilles tendon skateboarding a few years ago and that was bad enough, but to snap it is just .............. oh god, must be soooooo fkin painful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Ben. Someone was punting a theory that she may have been using an antibiotic known to result in tendinitis. Some docs prescribe the stuff without warning about the risks. Perhaps ask Rachel if that's the case? Long shot, but an interesting possibility.
Innnnteresting. She won’t be at this round but I’m sure there’s someone I could ask. Does tendinitis actually weaken the tendon or just cause inflammation?
Interisting point. However the landing is badly shaped or not that much in the end, it's sure she has a previous weakness. Spontaneous Achille's rupture happens just by walking up a step so.... Blame the gap is just emotional bashing! Bad luck is guilty.
I get tendonitis in my hands from work. Doesn't seem to weaken them, just get lumps that hurt with pressure. Joyous I tell thee! Great vid as usual Mr Cathro. Ta!

Rachel's injury looks similar to how Ratboy broke his ankle at Hafjell, just hitting the ground hard, although he overshot the landing whereas Rachel cased it, both landing on the flat off a big fast jump.
Ah geez, that’s what you get for thinking different things to what your saying. Of course I meant the patrons are massively generous and I’m massively grateful! 😬
There should be a "pool scene" in every Cathro vid...Also, when you tear your AT it feels like something jumped up and bit you, very strange and can be pretty painful injury. Bad thing about tearing/rupturing your AT is it takes a long time for it to heal...just ask Kevin Durant.
with regards to the drug testing, its been a while so i may be wrong so forgive me if I am, but didnt a certain dh rider win a world cup whilst high as a kite? absolute hero!!
As much as we hate to see another top women elite rider getting hurt, let us nit dwell on the negatives and just think positive, like its a great time for young women elites to gain that need confidence to level up. That might just what they need to be more competitive and make the women elite more exciting, with more riders challenging for the top spot and overall, not just 4 players in Tracey, Miriam, Rachel and Tahnee.

Awesome to see you at Laggan and then Fort Bill dude!!!!
Awesome coverage again!!

Any insight into where she runs her cleat in her shoe? If it's forwards the there may have been more leverage on the achilles.
