      I love Gibson Les Pauls. The Standard is more than I would pay but there are lots of choices. I have tried other brands like Fender but after trying to buy a Strat and having 4 of them go back due to issues out of the box, I bought a PRS SE and really think it's a wonderful guitar.

      EXACTLY what I thought when I saw another guy complain about them. Les Paul's guitar was covered with them (although Gibson tried selling those and people didn't buy them). Someone else on YT was complaining that how on earth could you try to get to grips with those coil tap switches when you were doing a gig. Well, you're supposed to learn how to play an instrument before you go on stage.

    • @JohnnyCNote

      Russ Desaulniers Addressing only the question of Les Paul, many insist that the business relationship between Les Paul and Gibson was not the smoothest. I realize that the late owner of this site, romanguitars.com/ , was not known for keeping his opinions to himself, but I once read about the Paul/Gibson situation on his site. I'll keep an eye out for the webpage. I may not share Ed Roman's opinions about a lot of things, but the website is a goldmine of guitar info.
      Then there’s the well-known SG debacle, when Gibson unilaterally decided to put Les Paul's name on a guitar without asking for his permission first. One risks the introduction of ill will to people once considered to be valuable to a presumed common goal…

  • @Tcflohr
    @Tcflohr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There's a difference between a split and a tap, that's what the switches can change. A tap lowers the number of windings being used in the pickup to make it more p90ish and still be relatively hum free. The split literally splits the could inner/outer. Small difference, but some people have a preference.

    My 2015 Les Paul standard came with push pull pots and at first I was saying whaaaat??? Why?? Then I fell in love with the available extra tones. I think this dip switch thing will be the same for many players. My Custom shop 59 has old school wiring and tone of the gods! But thats all it does, sounds like the perfect Les Paul not a tele or a strat or anything in between. Less versatile but if you want a 59 Les Paul sound its there in spades.

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think if these options came in a guitar from any non legacy brand people would love it, but because its anything to do with gibson people are ready to loose their mind over anything different. Its not like these are ugly/barely functional robotic tuners or anything crazy like that, its an internal component that gives you more options with your guitar.

      I had a couple of 2015's and apart from the unpopular 'features' unique to that year they were excellent quality instruments. Really good build quality and the plek'd setups and 9-46 strings lent itself to some insanely low and slinky actions out the box. That was the first time I played 9's on a Les Paul and could literally find no fault with the feel or tone I was getting out my tube amp.

    • @SeattleScotty
      @SeattleScotty 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you've hit the nail on the head here. Gibson is *in a world of hurt* - they aren't 'cool' like they used to be, so they are highly-scrutinized for everything they do. The lower prices of other high-quality guitars puts them out of reach of most players anyways.

    • @davidburke2132
      @davidburke2132 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Billingsley It’s precisely because Gibson are still the benchmark for electric guitars (along with Fender) and remain one of the biggest guitar sellers in the world that there are so many people with opinions about them and so many posting videos and making comments on this topic.

  • @guitarocd9984

    People say Gibson never makes changes. And then when they make changes everybody complains. People complained about the problem with the headstock so they attempted to fix it. People complain so they put it back the way it was. Most of the people complaining can't afford one anyway. I don't think they even know why they complain. I'm glad you tried to put some logic here. But good luck with that lol. Also I'm liking the Les Paul junior at that price. I could live with the pickguard for that price.

    Thank you! For posting this analysis. I think old customers are tied to the past. They’re not open to change. That’s their problem. They don’t like to get out of their comfort zone. I find these upgrades really valuable. You don’t have to buy several guitars and you can “configure” your guitar without modding it. I think this is smart. Oh! And by the way: yes this is built for the professional recording studio artists, not for amateurs that believe Gibson Les Paul Standard (today’s standard) should be a guitar spec of 60 years ago.

    That high pass filter thing is actually super cool, people have been modding guitars for passive high and low pass tone shaping for a long time. I’m not the strongest advocate for Gibson, but I own a 2017 LP Standard. What Gibson is doing with their Standard is not far from what Fender did with their Standard. If you want a “Traditional” Stratocaster, you’ll need to buy a Vintage Reissue. Gibson is using the platform for new technology and upgraded features. They make a Traditional for Christ’s sake! I'm a traditionalist at heart, but I love the coil split, out of phase, and blow switch push/pulls. If you want a “real” Les Paul, buy a freaking Traditional or Classic and get a real life.

    Many valid points. Personally, I'd only buy a Les Paul Traditional (I own two) or Classic because that simplicity is what I want in an LP. But the Standard has always been the more current guitar, embracing modern technology and ideas. If that's what you want, fair play to you. I have plenty of other guitars to cover the other options.
    BTW, couple of corrections on your DIP switch descriptions - the first two select coil splits (one coil only) OR coil taps (both coils less windings), and the next two switch in or out the treble-bleed circuit (or high-pass filter in Gibson speak) on the volume pot, they don't change the volume control into a high-pass filter.

Out of the bunch, I believe the LP Standard HP is the best one of the lot. After a few months of playing around with the G-Force Robo Tuners, I swapped them out with a set of official Grover Locking Tuners from Gibson, and the guitar has been perfect ever since. I have never opened the rear cavity and played with the dip switches. I have never had a reason to. The tone of the guitar is excellent just as it came from the factory.

Other than being internal, and thus less convenient, how is this different from the PVBs Gibson have been using in Standards for a while now?

    I agree with everything you said but a quick point. You can get the Standard in 2 other colors a Guitar Center exclusives. Trans Amber and the same Heritage Sunburst as last year. Also they must crap their pants when they see an Jaguar or Jazzmaster. I saw a guy on another video complaining about everything that you highlighted here and he said “I just want it like it use to be and it’s $3400! You can buy a better PRS for that!”. I pointed out that a PRS Custom 22 is $3500 with no extra features. Then I said if he wanted a Les Paul equivalent to that PRS he could buy a Traditional for $700 less and that it would age better.

    I have S1 switching on my USA Deluxe HSS Strat. At first about half of the stettings seemed muddy and useless, but when I went to direct recording they were wonderfully useful. This is just Gibson competing with their arch nemesis: Fender. I think it's wonderful. I wish I could afford a dipswitch standard. Then again I also don't. I can never make up my mind and all these tone options would just drive me nuts.

    I think the dip switches, push pull knobs, and beautiful non-vintage finishes are awesome. It is the only reason I picked up a '19 Gibson LP Standard. I also got guitar center to drop the price to 3,050. The price is kind of outrageous. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bought any of the newer Gibsons and picked up a PRS. These hardcore vintage lovers do need to chill out over this stuff. Well put man and way better video then some of these "expert guitar" ranters on TH-cam.

    For someone who posted a video complaining about a pickguard design on the Junior, it seems a bit odd that you're now railing against those who don't like the dip switches on the Standard... something that actually has an impact on the sound of the instrument. Personally, I don't have a bone to pick with dip switches, but it does seem a little funny that Gibson is installing bells and whistles in order to make the iconic Les Paul sound like a Strat or a Tele. If people want that sound, they will likely buy a Strat or the Tele (which are considerably cheaper). I get it... some may only want that sound for a song or two, then be able to switch back. But I have to wonder about the practicality of playing this guitar in a live setting, with so many switching variations. Are people going to remember all the variations? How durable will the electronics be on the road (or just in general)? Sometimes simplicity is the key to durability. Obviously, the Traditional model is the one to get for those who want the classic design. But maybe those people want the "Standard" name on their classic Les Paul design, just like some people want a certain pickguard shape on their Junior.

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have guitars with push pulls and i use them while playing live, some times switching multiple times per song, it really isn't that big of a deal and I don't think its as complicated as people are making it out to be. Also this video and the other are personal opinion pieces, i'm allowed to like one thing and not like another, just like everyone else in the world. It would be stupid if i only liked all things or only disliked all things, what kind of life is that?

      Less possibilities doesn't mean it's worse right away. Having a thousand switch combinations is cool, but "more" isn't always "better", and one may prefer a simpler solution, because he's not interested in such a great amount of options, which surely can make some feel overwhelmed. That doesn't change that the 2019 Standard seems awesome to me and that I consider the whole outrage about it to be ridiculous.

      @@amadeuszburnat7192 sure, but the same argument always pops up with locking tuners, or better bridge designs.

    • @amadeuszburnat7192

      A point worth noting here is that guitar is something more than just a way to create music - it's a very special item for guitarists and the way it looks is important too. That's why people may want vintage parts.
      Though if a vintage part works worse than its newer counterparts, and you know it's a fact, you can't really argue with that. All that matters is what one wants in his guitar, but even then one shouldn't whine about a particular guitar not fitting the bill but rather find one that actually does so.

    Seems to be most people are upset about the fact that the bells and whistles have been stuffed into a guitar with the venerable "Standard" name, versus putting them into a new model with a new name. The Les Paul Push-Pull-Switchomatic-Dippity-Do or whatever. And I totally get that.
    But I'm like you Ryan, that's exactly the kind of shit I'd love to have in my guitars. Gimme all the sounds. If I'm sitting there jamming on the couch and I want a single coil sound, or an out of phase sound, I dont want to keep switching guitars to get that.
    But then I'm also a long time Epiphone player who just purchased his first Gibson, a BFG Les Paul, because I can't stomach the idea of spending more than $2000 on a guitar, no matter how badly I want a LP Custom with the correct headstock 🤷‍♂️
    Also, as another commenter pointed out, let's not ignore the irony of the purists dumping on something that in all likelihood, Les Paul himself probably would have loved. The man fully embraced technology and was an innovator. Les Paul Recording anyone?
    Disclaimer: Robo-tuners still suck. Not every new idea is a good one.

  • @frmcf
    @frmcf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    People are definitely a bunch of dip switches, as has been commented. I don't mind the idea, also I believe that the 'Standard' has always been the model for experimentation with new features every year, hasn't it? I have no intention of buying a new Les Paul anyway.
    If there was one little thing to maybe get a little bit peeved about maybe it's things being made in a way that's less and less user-serviceable, not just guitars, but cars and stuff. Even some flipping toasters come with fancy circuit boards in them.
    Still, at the end of the day, as you've said, it's pickups, pots and switches. You can wire them up however you want.

    What they should do is just create a new model called the Les Paul Modern. That line can have the dip switches, the push/pull pots for coil splitting, maybe increase the scale length a bit to belp with tuning, etc. Have the Standard (which is now called the Traditional), which is the classic design, and have the Tribute and Studio for lower price options.

I wonder more about the expensive guitar company model in general, more than whether or not they should have made a blueberry burst or a Les Paul with dip switches. I hope Gibson and Fender can both do well. I like both of them. I also like Martins. I have never been a big Les Paul fan, but I like 335s and my favorite acoustic guitar that I have had since it was new in 1993 is a Gibson J-30. It is awesome. I hope to get a J45 sometime.

    They just pitched it wrong. Should have been an afterthought not a 'selling point'. "Oh yeah and just in case you get bored of all these combinations, we got you covered .. " It's all in their sales pitch. They basically roll out unpopular changes to the core construction and function of their 'standard' each year it seems and then sit there and tell you how awesome that is. Knowing full well that their core customer base doesn't appreciate it. Anyway, not too bothered about the dip switches. The PCB was the first thing to go when I bought mine anyway. The fact the Standard is now chambered to the point of being more of a Memphis than a Nashville for example .. yeah that's not cool at all. It sounds completely different to me!
