The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

HAIR co-creator James Rado passed away last year. He once reflected on this 1969 appearance: "The network wouldn't let us do anything involving nudity, but they did let us have smoke effects and allowed us the run of the theater. I don't think Mr. Sullivan knew what to think of us, but he seemed to truly enjoy the exuberance of the young cast. It was an exciting night and, boy, did it generate a long line at the box office the following morning!"

Ed Sullivan knew how to put his own preferences aside and give the people what they wanted. He really WAS a tastemaker and for us, as kids in the middle of America, he showed us things we never would have been able to see otherwise and did it without any New York attitude.
I did notice that a couple of the guys were wearing only vests, no shirts underneath. Even that was probably a little risque!

I was in Vietnam and took my R&R in Sydney Australia. It so happened that the Australian Production of Hair was playing at the Old Metro in Sydney. It was just wild and my eyes were wide open. At the end of the performance, they took us Sailors and Soldiers up on stage and held our hands and put beads around our necks and the girls kissed our blushing cheeks, the crowd went wild. It will be something I'll never forget.

Melba always gave more than most
One of the most memorable performances in the program history as Ed and the audience were overwhelmed with peace, love, and celebration. A number of entertainers were former HAIR cast members. For this particular ensemble, we see Melba Moore who would return to ES the following year promoting her new role in the Broadway musical, "Purlie".

@@Ma_Ba - Unfortunately, I believe Diane had already left the Broadway cast by this time as her stint with the play lasted about 9 months. The show opened in April of 1968 and this Ed Sullivan appearance was nearly one year later.
@@shyman99 Thank you for the facts of the run! Though I am a fan of hers, I only knew she was in Hair from her talk show interview(s). My individual connection with Hair was from a high school clothed production I saw when I was younger kid in an audience. The lyrics served me to get my father to stop hitting me because they raised my consciousness, so profoundly life altering effect of art. ("Easy to be kind" got me to call him a hypocrite because on a macro level, he intended better.)
If these "kids" were 18-20 at this time, then they're in their mid-70s today. It would be an amazing documentary to follow the storylines of what happened to this cast individually from then to today.

What a joy this brings back to my heart. I still cry when they sing that last song. The Vietnam War affected everyone back then. I remember watching Walter Cronkite and how it affected my father to watch the war on TV every night. I was too young to see Hair when it was originally performed but we knew all of the music and even incorporated much of it in our 6th grade school play in 1969/70. Except for the war, it seemed like such a promising time. At least it felt like we were headed in the right direction. Peace 🕊
Saw Hair live at the Aquarius in fall 72, saw same cast in early 73 in traveling show. Love HAIR, took my family to see HAIR live in Seattle, twice in 2003, 73 was my graduation & 03 my oldest son’s graduation. His Jazz Choir sang both theses songs at their spring concert in 2003, because my son & his girlfriend wore their tie dyed Hair t-shirts to school constantly. Ed Sullivan was iconic and we watched his show every Sunday night!
The Sullivan show was a must watch at our house for two decades.
We need more love, peace and sunshine in 2023!

I absolutely love this, it gives me goosebumps because it’s such a captured time capsule, being born in 1962 and being about 7 years old at this time, it’s exactly how I remember the young adults and older teens in that time…it’s dead on and the performance is amazing, love them going in the crowd, the audience reaction is priceless, some are into it,…the older crowd, not so much. What a find!

Wow, Melba's voice really grabs that melody and soars into the stratosphere. She does it without the screechiness and the need to cram a half a dozen notes into one syllable that I hear a lot of these days
She was amazing. Flesh Failures from the original recording always gives me chills.
I often wonder whether the music wasn't composed with her stellar ability in mind. Her work made it hard to reprise - we all had her brilliant renditions in our heads,

Wow, that bridged the generation gap on Ed Sullivan. Very cool. He was embraced by the flower children.
The episode this performance was featured in represents the great variety and aim of the Ed Sullivan show which was to appeal to all age groups and demographics. Along with the cast of "Hair", we had Peter Nero playing "Mrs. Robinson" (also uploaded here), Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme (of which Steve's rendition of "I've Gotta Be Me" has also been uploaded) and the Lennon Sisters. No matter your preferences, anyone could turn on the Sullivan show and find something to enjoy, which I find commendable!
Let's not forget Liza Minelli's interpretation of "Frank Mills"!

I turned 13 that year….. and remember reading that Ed Sullivan was very impressed with this original cast for HAIR. They were very respectful & never gave Mr. Sullivan any reason to think differently, as he was always particular in who performed on his show.
Remember how eclectic his show was? You'd have Eydie Gorme followed by a Bulgarian Circus troupe followed by Joey Bishop. I miss those days, even if I was a mere lad.

Oh my, such an iconic performance. And without wireless headset microphones, the work that had to be done to set just perfectly the overhead boom mics into position and adjust the volume settings in order to pick up all the voices so well and evenly is just masterful. Look forward to seeing at some point the formal posting of the 5th Dimension's rendition of this which aired on Sullivan just a few months after this performance.

Oh, man, I sure can relate. Wireless mics have been a nightmare and a curse on every show I've tech'd in the past 30 years or so. This is a brilliant bit of live stagecraft.
Very possible they were lip syncing - so many of the music acts on that show did.

I saw this on TV (I was 13) and fell in love with Hair forever more. I wanted to be in the cast. I bought the album and memorized all the songs.
This is not surprising at all that Ed had the cast of Hair the musical on. After all, think of all the counter culture performers he had on the show in years prior ( a who's who of counterculture royalty): Elvis, The Beatles, The Stones, Sonny & Cher, Mamas & Papas, The Doors, etc...(I could go on).
That was a big counterculture moment when Ed Sullivan received love beads from the cast of hair. Earlier mama Cass did the same thing about a year earlier but that’s not in the video with the group the mamas and the Papas

He did attend the August 1965 Beatles concert at Shea Stadium (56,000 +, the largest gathering for pop act up to that time).

I wasn't referring to the Beatles first Ed Sullivan show appearance of 1964 (of course he was there for that). Also, while the Beatles did many stadium concerts in 1964 they did not appear at Shea Stadium (a much larger stadium that when the Beatles appeared there was full to capacity) until August 1965.

It was amazing, life changing for many of us.
This remains the best, the most vital and the most important performance ever on "The Ed Sullivan Show." "Hair" remains one of the best, greatest, most vital and most important musicals and stage plays of all time. The many themes, issues, messages and morals of "Hair," most notably the messages of anti-war, pro-peace-and-love, pro-progressiveness,, pro-freedom and pro-acceptance of all people, remain as vital and as important today as they were in the sixties--of course. "Hair" is wonderful, insightful, caring, loving, anti-war, smart, important, pro-peace-and-love and beautiful. Let the sunshine in.

I was a Hair "groupie" for the show at the Aquarius theater in Hollywood. Saw the show 100ish time. The cast on the Ed Sullivan show looks so clean. The Aquarius cast was a lot grungier!

This time was wonderful, the peaceful atmosphere of happiness, love.
Peaceful until the cops came after you. Peaceful until they sent the National Guard out to shoot kids protesting the infinitely disgraceful Vietnam War.
Way too many of the adults absolutely despised peace, love and the idea of changing anything for the better. They hated the music and burned lots of records, they despised the art, they hated the clothing, they couldn't stand the idea of their kids getting together with other kids who had a different skin color. The FBI had a file on everybody and assassinated all of our heroes.
What's even worse, all those reactionaries are still here. Different generation maybe. But the same rotten attitude.
Wish I could go back to that time ,, so disappointing today.

I saw this performance. They look so young. Many may be gone now. I was a lil! kid then.
Kim Melford was Claude in this version (17 years old). He died very young from a heart condition (37). He was also in the original Rocky Horror cast (as were Meatloaf and Tim Curry). Martha Plimpton's mother, Shelly, was also an original show along with Diane Keaton. Lots of talent on that stage.

My mother saw this in 1969 in Washington DC. It hit the city like a rocket- the most popular show in town. The audience was invited to the stage to dance with the actors. A unique experience. A unique time.
These people give off genuine good vibes. If only the youth of today were into the love and peace vibe. So much anger and lunacy with today's young people.

My family and I sat in front of our small black & white tv watching this when it originally aired. Wonderful performance.
Ed was all about diversity long before it was the progressive thing to do..I watch it regularly on Catchy Comedy, and it amazing how inclusive it was...you can tell it was high on his list when booking guests...
Ed Sullivan could feature diversity AND get sponsors for his TV show. Very rare in the '50s.
@@billstotts2346 As a young black kid in Brooklyn, it was required viewing as it was entertaining, and the only opportunity to see black artists perform..I didn't realize how valuable the experience was at the time.
@@edreid7872 I couldn't agree more! These artists launched into history from the Ed Sullivan Show. That was where I first saw Sly and the Family Stone, and then I went to their live shows.

This just came up in my feed and I'm blown away! 😲👏 TYVM for sharing this video! Bert Sommer was a neighbor of mine in '76 in a suburb of Rochester NY. He asked me for a ride to Manhattan for a gig. It just happened to be my weekend off. His image was used for the "Hair" playbill. Later he played in Woodstock that first day. I'm 99.99% sure that he's wearing the short sleeve green jersey with the double aughts "00". TV screens were quite smaller back then, so I've had to watch this a few times to be sure that I was looking at the right singer! So Cool to see him Here! WOW! What a surprise blast from the past! Ed Sullivan was a visionary. He used his power to bring a wide variety of entertainment on his show. I have recently learned so much more about him and his work.
He treated all groups with respect and MANY foreign groups.

They had that special deal where you could get half price tickets within 30 minutes to show time. I lived in Hollywood. Saw it three times there.
I saw Hair years ago. I was a young girl. Loved it then ... still do!

I think the first lady singing "Aquarius" also sang lead in a group called The Voices of East Harlem. They released 3 albums with amazing songs. They also performed on Ed Sullivan show and at Sing Sing Prison among many other performances.
So far most profound performance of this I have found, the lead singer breaks my heart with the first note

I saw the version at our outdoor San Diego Starlight theater back in the 90's. But they wouldn't allow the naked scene. I loved it but still wished I was a little older so I could have seen it in the 60's. I heard about it & loved the hit songs from it on the radio, but I was pretty young.
It would have been fun to see Hair live..I remember having the original soundtrack. on RCA records.

I was 6 years old when this aired, and I remember being at my grand-parent's home (dad's parents). I can remember my grandpa thinking they all needed tackled and given a hair cut...lol. I thought they looked so cool, and I loved the music. So, just a wee bit of a generation gap there as far as likes and dislikes....lol.

Saw Hair on Broadway 4 days before being drafted into the Army. I was unfortunate to get #5 in the Draft Lottery. Went to Nam and hummed all the songs while being shot at in a WAR, yes a WAR not a Conflict not a Police Action a WAR.
I was 7 years old when I saw this and remember it well!

It's a shame Ronnie Dyson wasn't here to sing this on the show. When it comes to the stage play, his performace is iconic.

Having lived through that era, 4:40 captures perfectly the great chasm between the older and younger generations. I’ve never since seen a chasm that wide.
I love the movie! Unfortunately, it wouldn't possible for me to watch the play but Forman`s picture from 1979 means to me something I can`t explain
