- "Eve Monsees, I wouldn't be playing guitar, I wouldn't be playing music, if it weren't for her," Gary Clark Jr said when accepting his 2014 Grammy award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. "She took me to my first gig, and it all started from there." We reunited the two childhood friends in the suburban Texas garage where they fell in love with the blues together.

I love the fact he mentioned her when he got his Grammy, very touching. He's still real and didn't forget his true friends.

I met him in Auckland on Tuesday night after his show and I can honestly say he is the most humble dude I ever met. It was the most perfect night of my life.

that's awesome man, I plan on going to his concert where he's playing with the Foo Fighters later this year! I've only heard nice things about him, and I believe every word about how humble he is. He remembers his roots.

usually u hear great artists give credit to a famous musician that inspired them or mentored them, but here, clark credits someone who isn't famous, who isn't a household name, a neighbor/classmate. great story. thanx 4 sharing. wish it had been longer.

You can tell Gary Clark Jr. is quite a humble musician, very grateful of his blessings and success. Eve is quite a talented musician as well. Best to their musical travels always.

I got chills when Gary described getting the letter from Eric Clapton and then the first time he played at the Crossroads Festival... excellent documentary!
It always starts with the blues. That's what lures you into the music, especially guitar. It's not in any beginner guitar book you'll ever read. But after learning your first chords, learn your pentatonic blues scales/major scales, then go relive the blues of history. It will surely make you a better player, trust me.
It's literally in every beginner's guitar book.

@@estebanb7166 in some yes, BUT a lot of bands referenced using 12 bar blues in those books are not actually blues musicians! It’s a lot of rock, which misses a lot in my opinion

Evan Tisby - The Blues doesn't 'need' to do anything. It's perfect where and how it is. People need to look to find it. If it's everywhere then it's not 'The Blues.'!!
If it does make a come back, it won't be in this generation. Only musicians in my opinion, who took blues to another level were The rolling stones, The Beatles and Hendrix. Others kept repeating it.

I was at 2010 Crossroads and Gary Clarke jr was the best !!!! 2 nights before he played at Buddy Guy's Legends …..I thought I died and went to heaven, what a great experience it was for 3 days in Chicago.Jimmy Vaughan, Buddy, Hubert Sumlin, Doyle Bramhill, Eric, BB King, Sheryl Crowe , Sue and Derrick Trucks!

AspiringGuitarist I went in 2013 - you HAVE to do it if you can. It's a surreal experience.
I can't believe Crossroads was his first big show. He had such poise that I thought he was a big player that I just hadn't heard of yet.

I met Gary a few weeks ago and I’ve never met a more talented and humble musician.
I sold cars with Gary's dad and remember him sit-in on the curb (guitar in hand) waiting to get in and play. He's come a LONNNNG WAY

I saw a show on TV years ago about Gary & his childhood best friend Eve but could not remember her name a few minutes ago. Wiki never had it so I was glad to find it here. Those cats were thick as thieves & maybe still are? They were totally in love with the music & I know they still are. I always thought they would get married. Friendship anyway that you know lasts!
