+TheSmokingTire was just about to say i thought you were already using something similar to a Pilotfly. id seen a shadow outline of you using a handheld device on the walk around and engine shots of of Luccia's STI
I love the super light frame +200 to 300 horsepower format. much more fun than "oh it's heavy as shit but has 750 horse power so it's still good, right?"
+Nik Brudar my version of that would be a moded turbo FRS with 300hp but still far from 1600 lbs. I guess you can start tossing stuff out of the car but you still aren't getting there.
true friend for holding your camera the rest of the way and for the fist bump on the straight away, he had a good angle for having the camera upside down and realized it at first and correcting it A++✊👊 car looks proper too
I know this is an extreme example but this is the kind of one take video I was to see, full of energy and entertainment. The one you did with the minivan was similar. Your stand in cameraman did a good job too lol
It looks like a baby DTM car. How much is it for one of the cars? Thats also Kevin Magnussen as in Former F1 driver? Thats a hell of an instructor then :D
+SeaRanger311 I think it's a bit over $100,000 to straight-up purchase a car. But the real idea is that you pay a small fee to arrive-and-drive a race.
Loved this vid, so much info on the screen! Really enjoyed watching your braking points for each corner and seeing how, with tire temps raising, they changed/improved.
+ajvasil He did a killer job recovering that camera and shooting for like 6 minutes. He was also a really good instructor, and took 2.5 seconds off my lap time between the first and second sessions. I would definitely hire that dude for a full day of private instruction in this car. Tristan Vautier was there, and he was indycar rookie of the year in 2013, and he ran a 58.2 or something, and I think with a full day's practice and no passenger in the car I could get close to that.
Really like the angles and the information at the bottom. Gives more of an ideea how the car acts at certain rpms and speeds. Though might not be possible on the street (MPH) it would be cool for the channel to expand in this direction
Its not (former) F1 driver Kevin Magnussen, this guys name is Kevin Madsen. And in denmark there is a similar race series just below the Danish championship (DTC), and its calles superturismo, i just dont recall that its an renault engine in those cars.
+Ryan II Mark is great, we give each other shit all the time, especially at the race track. And if we're being technical about it, I did beat him. He ran a 1:00.55 and I ran a 1:00.39, meaning Jack Baruth is still the only Baruth brother to beat me at time attack :)
Damn matt can really drive! (not that this should be surprising) Nice to see considering how many auto journalists really cant. How difficult was this car to get a handle on?
AWESOME!!! I LOVE Renault... =D (I own a Renault) & yes, you do get a second chance(or maybe a third)if you make a mistake in such a light car... (I consider all cars that give such second chances the best BTW) Great video - gonna watch it again - added it to FAVs but, I'm gonna have to make a special 'Smokin'' playlist for it(& others)... Thanks...
nice little track car. reminds me of the smaller, cheaper Aussie Race Cars we have in Australia. space frame. but no real downforce or fancy parts. they use a Yamaha FJ1200 bike engine and box, and a Ford Escort diff. Cars like this are great fun, and fill the gap to say, a Radical SR8.
Holy shit that track looks like hell to drive with huge bumps in the breaking and acceleration zones. You would think they would repave it with a contractor that knows what there doing
in a weird way it kinda reminds me of an audi racecar but I can't remember which series. Forgive me if you said in the video, must have missed it, but is it awd?
+John M. Morley you can use your own helmet, of course. This is my personal helmet, and it needs to be open face to see my facial expressions while reviewing cars. Most people use a closed face helmet.
+lvcsslacker It looks like a tubular frame race car with a body on it to make it look slightly like a road car. I don't think EXR makes them though if they're known as the Mitjet in Europe.
So is it basically a Renault Clio RS engine? Must be a lot of fun, I just don't get the Audi look. First isn't that gonna be a problem from a legal point of view? I know it's a race car not a road car, but still. But I guess they must have permission to use their headlights and taillights, still they could have used cheaper lights. At the end of the day though, it must be an absolute blast to drive!!
what model car is that? looks sorta like a Dodge front end or Chrysler ,!!!!I don't know looks very different ,!!!!!I mean I understand the flower out and everything but I just can't get it!!!!..... looks very familiar!!!!...... but with the flare outs on the fenders.... the back looks like a Dodge Stratus, the backend wise...I don't know maybe BMW lol.....I'm lost lol I guess that's why I stick to bike's but I can drive the hell out of any car I get INTO!!!!
+BIKES BLADES/GUN'S The shell is not from any road car though. It's a bespoke chassis and body work. They will put grille and headlamp/tail lamp stickers to make it look like any car you like.
Kevin deserves huge kudos for handling the GoPro, a totally unique perspective. the guy did a great job
+altern8ive I agree dude. It was trippy watching him film, in a good way!
I'd actually like to see more of that view. Maybe passenger helmet mounted or on one of those new DJI gimbals.
+Terry Dolan I'm trying to get one of those DJI osmo's to replace my chinese made GoPro gimbal. Think it may happen.
+altern8ive Came to the comments to say this, im glad someone said it before I did. Props to Kevin!
+TheSmokingTire was just about to say i thought you were already using something similar to a Pilotfly. id seen a shadow outline of you using a handheld device on the walk around and engine shots of of Luccia's STI
mad props to kevin for the awesome camera work!
It's like a mini Audi A4 DTM car, mad props to Kevin, looks like he has some hidden talent....
Kevin's filming definitely gave more perspective on how bumpy, and jarring driving that car was
I love the super light frame +200 to 300 horsepower format. much more fun than "oh it's heavy as shit but has 750 horse power so it's still good, right?"
+Nik Brudar you mean s2k's. Miatas had no balls at all, like 100ish wheel hp
+Sharkiesha Thomson it'd be cool if yamaha made good on that light weight sports car concept they showed at the tokyo motor show
+hildenbrandt21 they're not supposed to have balls, you install them later in the form of a supercharger or a turbo, changes the car completely.
+Nik Brudar
my version of that would be a moded turbo FRS with 300hp but still far from 1600 lbs. I guess you can start tossing stuff out of the car but you still aren't getting there.
+Jeff K
oh, ariel atom
There are so many bumps on that track it could pass for a rally course...
+Christian Augustin It's actually being re-surfaced this week!
+Christian Augustin also shows that the valving isn't too great on those dampers...
Looks like a really fun car to drive, the track looks like a decent length too, that last corner looks pretty challenging.
I liked the new "dynamic" view in the top right corner. Added an element of realism to the vid.
"As they say, a day at the race track is...the best. It's the best."
That's true, they do say that.
This was a total blast to watch.
Great driving, and awesome filming by Kevin!
That car seems like a lot of fun! Crazy that it's only 1600lbs! Seems like it has the perfect power to weight ratio! Great car
What an incredible business venture. Kudos Kevin and company.
+1 to Kevin for being a bro and doubling as a cameraman.
Love the angles when the camera falls of and the instructor films. It has a nice aggressive style to it.
Epic video! Love how he just held the camera after it fell! It was more immersive!
Awesome vid Matt. Love that u put different cam angles up for us and love when u do track videos. More track videos please.
true friend for holding your camera the rest of the way and for the fist bump on the straight away, he had a good angle for having the camera upside down and realized it at first and correcting it A++✊👊 car looks proper too
Nice driving!
Car seems very lively 08:34 ;p
props also to the quick thinking improvised cameraman ...
1600lb = 725kg. Holy shit.
I know this is an extreme example but this is the kind of one take video I was to see, full of energy and entertainment. The one you did with the minivan was similar.
Your stand in cameraman did a good job too lol
Looks like a fun experience specially for beginners, the race car is cool. Good job Matt.
Awesome race series. Wish i had the time and money to come and play!
thought the instructor holding the gopro when it fell off was actually a pretty neat angle
You were really gunning it on the last lap!
That was fun. Nice to see big guy friendly race cars. Nice driving Matt.
Matt gets quiet and serious when he's 10/10-ing it
+YakoffShmirnoff every bit of energy you spend talking you're not using for going faster.
+TheSmokingTire haha, yeah I could tell you were really focused on knocking down your lap time. congrats on setting a good time.
That looked like a blast!
Great video Matt
It looks like a baby DTM car. How much is it for one of the cars? Thats also Kevin Magnussen as in Former F1 driver? Thats a hell of an instructor then :D
Edit- Kevin Madsen. Not Magnussen. Not F1 driver but still very talented.
TheSmokingTire I guess i miss heard then. But he still seems like a great talent :) Thank you for answering :D :D
looks like an audi. especially the headlights
+Q U A T T R O they are stickers. EXR will make the car look like any brand you like.
+inuysha360 telemetry is great, really made me want to invest in a basic system for myself to use at tracks.
Loved the screen shots!! Nice race car!!
wow loved the onboard telemetry :D great video!
Thanks Matt great job! I'll definitely look in to giving this a try.
Wow what a car.
Would love to see that car at sanoma or willow springs.
Love the telemetry data. Obviously not possible on a regular one take but still really cool.
You should enter into this racing series. Your lap times were pretty consistent. And do a day in the life type vlog
I'm trying to get into a race in the spring
So, Kevin is going to be a cameraman at TST now?
+ajvasil He did a killer job recovering that camera and shooting for like 6 minutes. He was also a really good instructor, and took 2.5 seconds off my lap time between the first and second sessions. I would definitely hire that dude for a full day of private instruction in this car. Thumbs up for awesome camera work! :)
Its not (former) F1 driver Kevin Magnussen, this guys name is Kevin Madsen. And in denmark there is a similar race series just below the Danish championship (DTC), and its calles superturismo, i just dont recall that its an renault engine in those cars.
Mark B was a wee bit sensitive to your comment at the end...dude needs to lighten up just a wittle bit.
+Ryan II Mark is great, we give each other shit all the time, especially at the race track. And if we're being technical about it, I did beat him. He ran a 1:00.55 and I ran a 1:00.39, meaning Jack Baruth is still the only Baruth brother to beat me at time attack :)
+TheSmokingTire Oh snap!! Sounds like IT IS ON SON!! Gotta up your game and get after Jacky boy
+TheSmokingTire it's always good to have someone to give you shit at the track - keeps you on your toes
+Ryan II jack is really fast, I'd love to do an enduro event with both brothers Baruth
Yes, you beat me (although my R&T article will say "virtual tie").. Let's drop the green and go wheel to wheel, son. :)
Gj Kevin! your a trooper!
i love the multiple cameras
Damn matt can really drive! (not that this should be surprising) Nice to see considering how many auto journalists really cant.
How difficult was this car to get a handle on?
Quite easy in the grand spectrum of race cars
+TheSmokingTire gummon Matt, link a list to other journo times
If you close your eyes and listen it is almost like being back in the super tourer era of the BTCC!
Thanks...
Can't wait to drive it.....when someone makes a mod of it for Assetto Corsa ;)
The view you get from Kevin holding the GoPro is pretty sweet actually.
That data recording setup is bad ass.
great camera work!!
people in helmets always look happy....
I've always wondered: what sunglasses are those? they don't relfect. pretty awesome..
great video by the way. once you go full race, you never go back.. :)
+wuesteban www.dillonoptics.com/blog/collection/
One of this ;)
+ODIO POWER thanks man!
wuesteban Np m8, i like them too, but they are expansive :/
epic camerawork from the other guy!!! nice!
I have these exact wheels on two of my cars; Team Dynamics PR1.2's in 18x9.
Very light and strong.
Looks like a shitload of fun.
Looks super fun, but I think they probably could have softened up the suspension a little for that speed bump riddled track.
Love the sound of the straight cut gears, imagine this with a 600hp V8
what a cool opportunity to drive this thing
you guys look nice and comfy in there
Serious skills!!! Hell yes!!!!
That's an awesome car.
Think they'd ever sell it to the public? I think it would be a hit.
Cool. Is this kinda sort of a RWD Clio Cup?
Thats awesome man
The Instructor is like the Paul Greengras of automobile race filming..:D
Top outside cam just slightly behind the others. Otherwise that's an awesome setup with all the telemetry and everything.
it's like a baby DTM car. awesome!
that is a sexy design, nice proportions
nice little track car. reminds me of the smaller, cheaper Aussie Race Cars we have in Australia. space frame. but no real downforce or fancy parts. they use a Yamaha FJ1200 bike engine and box, and a Ford Escort diff. Cars like this are great fun, and fill the gap to say, a Radical SR8.
Is it worth the money? I saw your drove a Lamborghini at dream racing as well was it as fun as that or it’s not even comparable?
im hooked where do i sign up?i would love to race this series....
this little Audi A 5 seem very quick. not a lot of horsepower under the hood. Matt having fun.
Is that the same engine as a Clio Cup race car?
How do you guys get the tach, brake and throttle read outs on screen like that?!?! thats awesome!
+Thomas Bradshaw It's an AIM system, they are like $2,000.
Nice, thank you
Holy shit that track looks like hell to drive with huge bumps in the breaking and acceleration zones. You would think they would repave it with a contractor that knows what there doing
Its really sunny outside for it to be 10 pm
so its a tube frame track car, with a Renault engine, and Audi body work?
Straight cut rears, or supercharged? It sounds awesome.
+Ander Pendragon that's definitely the sound of straight-cut gears.
Patrick94GSR That's what I thought.
I take it the telemetry on screen the speed is supposed to be mph not kmh?
Is that a new watch Matt? Looks like a Tissot maybe?
Shinola Black blizzard
in a weird way it kinda reminds me of an audi racecar but I can't remember which series. Forgive me if you said in the video, must have missed it, but is it awd?
+Brent Moore rear wheel drive
Matt! Let's see you do some drifting in your mustang! maybe you can get a tire sponsor to pay for it...
the different camera angles are not in sync :( ...also 1600lbs? DAYUM
They definitely are all sync'ed together
It looks larger than a first generation miata how can it be 1600 lbs ?
Just curious.
Live axle? Did I see that right?
They should make a plush doll of Matt in a race suit. He looks adorable.
is it based on an audi a5??
This thing looks so goddamn fun
can you use your own track cert helmet, close faced, or must it be open faced
+John M. Morley you can use your own helmet, of course. This is my personal helmet, and it needs to be open face to see my facial expressions while reviewing cars. Most people use a closed face helmet.
so is it based off any car? or did they make their own vehicle for the series?
+lvcsslacker It looks like a tubular frame race car with a body on it to make it look slightly like a road car. I don't think EXR makes them though if they're known as the Mitjet in Europe.
awesome opportunity
So is it basically a Renault Clio RS engine?
Must be a lot of fun, I just don't get the Audi look.

At the end of the day though, it must be an absolute blast to drive!!
those are not "complete" headlights. they look like stickers. i.e. on nascar and stuff
+Adrian Precupeanu upon looking at it once more I guess you're right, they really do look like stickers
They are stickers and EXR will make your spec race car look like any car you want! They have BMW, Audi, Ford, Citroen, and more
Matt you look massive in that thing! I'd never fit...
Matt could you explain how this type of gearbox works in more detail?
+Dailey100 You should check out a channel called engineering explained, he has multiple videos on how different kinds of gearboxes work :)
Paddle shifters, but with a clutch to get off the line. Once you're moving you don't use the clutch anymore.
So Matt, what would your EXR Racer be made to look like?
A Chrysler Cordoba
8:32 - Ah, nothing like a bit of oppo to get the blood flowing. That will be my Viagra when I am old I tell ya ...
Good film job after the go pro crash
How nice of the driving instructor to just start being a cameraman after the suction failed.
that sound!!!
what is this podcast called Matt was talking about?
+Lilskidmarks14 Hhhmmm, everything he does is call The Smoking Tire, so what do you think they would call the Podcast?
+MrBS216 Ponies and rainbows
what model car is that? looks sorta like a Dodge front end or Chrysler ,!!!!I don't know looks very different ,!!!!!I mean I understand the flower out and everything but I just can't get it!!!!..... looks very familiar!!!!...... but with the flare outs on the fenders.... the back looks like a Dodge Stratus, the backend wise...I don't know maybe BMW lol.....I'm lost lol I guess that's why I stick to bike's but I can drive the hell out of any car I get INTO!!!!
It is not based on any road car
TheSmokingTire well its got its design off of some concept of a car we both no that cause THE shell as u would say is from a car!!!!!!
+BIKES BLADES/GUN'S The shell is not from any road car though. It's a bespoke chassis and body work. They will put grille and headlamp/tail lamp stickers to make it look like any car you like.
