To be fair any daedra faithful has had to have done some messed up shit. Not counting Lady Azura and maybe Malacath(?), all of the daedra are on some bs. Erandur is a good man. He doesn't deserve to die. He betrayed his allies partly out of fear and partly because he knew what they were doing for Vaermina was wrong. Maybe I take fiction too seriously but there's just certain things I can't do, certain things I feel bad about doing and I can never kill Erandur.

It was the first time I didn't follow a Daedric Prince's will. Erandur repented, he deserves another chance. I'll almost certainly never use him as a follower, but I felt I did the right thing. My Dragonborn essentially wants to be good, despite the occasional psychotic rage.

So here is my pov he doesn't deserve the quick death and taking the skull for anything but completion or rp isn't worth it. Sure he did unspeakable things in his youth and tried to run away but like you said he came back with a purpose. If you actually travel around skyrim a bit before coming here you will meet characters claiming to have been helped by a priest of Mara on his way to Dawnstar. I always take him out on adventure once in a while simply because he is better off repenting covered in the blood of daedric cultists than rotting away in self pity at that shrine. Also the whole you locking the skull away yourself thing only makes sense till you remember daedric princes can canonically at any point recall their artifacts to oblivion unless an incredibly powerful seal or barrier is placed in which case they have no end of minions to break into your house. It just makes more sense to let the priest do his God given ritual to defeat another God. 😂

The only time I killed Erandur was my first playthrough, to get the Skull or Corruption for the achievement. Every other playthrough I always spare him and keep him as a very powerful follower. He's also a good person who tries to do the right thing, so it makes the decision easy.

Erandur has really changed. He dedicates his life to serving Mara and spreading goodwill to the people. Vaermina has you kill him for her own reasons, not because it is in the name of retribution for the crimes he committed as a worshipper.
I almost always help him and keep him as a follower. He is a competent mage follower and I think narratively, helping the dragonborn keep peace in Skyrim is a redemptive arc for his character.
