The way this was filmed is both scary and magnificent at the same time. There is something about the cuts and transitions that make it look like something ominous but magnificent is happening. Something like a japanese film.
I see that, too. And the male fish's faces are strangely reminiscent of Japanese No masks. And the colors in the seaweed of that opening shot are so Japanese too. This is nature photography informed by art, for sure.

This is actually a really sophisticated strategy. Only Kobudai who live a long time and are able to gain the weight (meaning they hunted well and used the food efficiently) get to be male. But all the fish that survive to breeding age get to breed, unlike many species where 50% of the species are males and 50% of more of them don't get to breed.
I was just thinking about that. They took natural selection to the next level.
Actually human is quite the strange case when it comes to sex ratio, most animal have far more female than male

Mathematically an individual of whichever gender a species has more of at birth is disadvantaged because they can't find enough mates. So genomes that produce 50/50 male female are at an advantage.

Yes. Sir David Frederick Attenborough is a planetary treasure. He has contributed so much. And by modulating his voice, he allows us to feel our feelings, rather than overpowering them with histrionics as so many other less adept nature documentary narrators do. Our emotions are often more evident to us when we are not being told what to feel.

I swam with one of these in a bay of the Whitsundays Islands off the east coast of Australia. We were on a boat & snorkling trip when we anchored in the bay and the Napoleon Fish immideately came up to the boat. Everyone was scared to get into the water with this enormous fish around, I estimate he was more then 1m long and pretty tall aswell. But our tour guide explained that he is harmless and is just curious like a little dog. When I got into the water he would follow me around a little bit. He was a scary and beautiful sight, the huge mouth with crooked teeth looked a little scary and kind of dumb but his body was of beautiful colors, blues, greens and yellows. I will never forget this little adventure, wonderful nature.
Our tour guide said, that there is only ever 1 male in the bay and when it dies the largest female will change sex.

Are you thinking of Humphead Maori Wrasse or Bumphead Parrotfish? Kobudai are not found on the Great Barrier Reef, they are only found in Japan, Korea and China. Bumphead Parrotfish and Humphead Maori Wrasse are similar-looking fish that are indeed found on the Great Barrier Reef.

many fish species will "mouthwrestle" to fight, as their teeth are the main weapon of many fish - they can't exactly punch or kick. the Kissing Gourami is particularly well-known for this behaviour, although what may look like kissing is actually an aggressive dispute!
