Underweight halfes are certainly not common, but they do exist. There are a few causes for this. the most common is a coin that was struck on the wrong stock. They've been found on quarter and dollar stock before, these would typically be slightly thinner - accounting for the weight differential. Oh no, please do not clean your coins at all. It is likely to leave micro abrasions that serious collectors will pick up on and really devaluate the coin. Thanx for watching

Technically that is true. But out of a random selection of 10 people, how many can effectively preserve a coin without damaging the surface in the process? I't just not worth the risk in 99% of the cases. Especially for a rare coin. That's unless you don't mind no-grades or Details grades. Thanx for watching!
When I say save it usually is a metal detector find and kill the corrosion that may be eating the coin . But a zinc penny isn’t going to be saved in my opinion
I believe those scratches on the coin came from being a reused planchet where the messed up coin was scrubbed and repressed at the mint.. I've several coins that weren't scrubbed well enough and the former print is still visible..
When you start to notice that the scratchy parts match the same distance from each other as the clear print. Just in a improper, position usually misaligned from the ring of the coin.. Basically, reprinted rejects.
Notice that the T and Y are printed over the scratches? Those gotta be eraser marks, don't they? Can't be a coincidence when you start to notice it so much in coin roll hunting that you assume it's not a rare error..

They should experiment and prove that steel, brass and copper can be worn out by cloth? They should make a recall. Good Observation. Those could be DYE MARKERS: should be the opposite of double dyes. It should be termed Less Dye Marker/Area [LD]. This could be a good discovery. // i have the same problem with nickel 1964; 1946 most areas as if wearing out; but, it could really be Less Dye Marker.

How lucky can I be? I found 11 pennies on the street, and one of them is that 1983 Double Dye (rear) and Double Dye Front (like new)

If you're set on cleaning them get a product called E-Zest. You should be able to get it from any coin shop.
But I wouldn't. I never clean any of mine.

Condition is always everything !! I disagree on cleaning as a very poor coin can be saved by cleaning to preserve but it a rare issue !!

I would never try to clean my coins. Personally I don't even dip mine using E-Zest or something to that effect.
