My heart goes out to Richie. I know its the rules, and Jack is my man. But I luv watchin' Richie ride...can't wait to see the battle next year with Martin and Jessie hot on their tails. EWS....better than chips🤘
Heart breaking about Richie, you always want to see it come down clean but it was great to see his teammate Kasper Woolley take a 7th out there. Just a wildly good young rider.
For Wallner to finish his racing career with an overall 9th position must feel pretty good. He's been at the sharp end throughout; a consistently good rider and great ambassador. Hope his new role as team manager is even half as impressive.
He's definitely ending it on a positive note! The guys been an amazing competitor over the years and we're sure he'll continue to be a brilliant ambassador as Ibis team manager
I thought it might have a been a bit of a let down with the Richie situation but the race was amazing. Nice work telling the story EWS team. Well done Bex and Martin and cool to see Jess Stone going so well

I gotta say, Maes and Jesse Melamed are my to favorite riding styles in EWS. Maes just floats over everything, almost skipping along the trail, Jesse is economical and committed, awesome riders.

Amazing all year, thanks so much to the entire EWS community. Just what the doctor ordered to keep spirits up. My heart goes out to Ritchie, stink ending to an amazing battle all season. Always next year tho, and looking forward to that now with baited breath.
I believe that rules are rules but disqualify a competitor for the entire even for one mistake seems kinda wayyyyy tooooo much.
Maybe some time penalty or something but technically in this case destroyed the chance to win a championship for a mistake that anyone can make, is crappy to say the least. Rude and Moir gave an excellent battle this season ether one could be the champion hands down!! 👍👍👍
Yeah, I would have thought a time penalty was normal for something like that, not total disqualification for the race... Seems strange.
Bummer way to end the seaon for Rude. I'm sure Jack would have preferred a good ol' fight to the end.
Richie wasnt the only one missing the gates. another top 10 rider Slavomir did the same thing. If only the organizers could tape the cource to the finish just like they did previous rounds

a time penalty would of been better to make it more interesting , and if you had to stay inside the flags they should of just taped them
@@drumandbassob0007 this is not the first time gates have been used, the riders were aware and it’s the same for everyone. Only two people made this mistake… I don’t think we can blame the system or the organisers. Honestly the gates are so clear and easy to spot, Richie just made a crazy mistake.
I do think time penalties make sense, but how do you decide on a fair and reasonable time penalty for course cutting? DQ is a bit draconian but either way it’s a UCI call and is in the rules (same for World Cup DH) so again it’s the same for everyone.
What a season. Feels sad it's done. Can't wait for when TH-cam shows "Course Preview - Tweed Valley" in recommendations next year! Thanks for the coverage and all the amazing videos!

Such a shame we didn't get to see Moir and Rude go to the wire, but what an amazing finale to the season. Great to see Hattie Harnden so close to the podium in the overall too. Definitely my favourite MTB series, this year. Really good coverage 👏🤘😎

Hat tips to Melanie and Jack for winning the title, an amazing season for both. We can even say that Jack had to win the title with a big rock. Literally. Still it sucks Richie was DQ for the entire race for that mistake. Of course a DQ for the stage where the violation happened is inevitable... but a DQ for the entire race and all 6 stages... man that's harsh.

The rule isnt clear for this situation = tapes and gates inside. Separete for gates and tapes is clear but not for that. Sad for Richie and Slawetk. Not fair aspecialy that there was more signs of riding like them. Big congrats for Moir for title, Maes for winning round and Jessie for fight till end!

28:04 there's a new piece of tape where Rude cut the corner lol. Why didn't they just tape it out that way in the first place?! xD
20/20 hindsight I guess, and I doubt they're going to leave gates untaped again. That said, as I've seen others point out, there was literally only two riders that made that "mistake" out of a hundred pros, so the tape probably shouldn't have been needed in the first place.
They assumed riders new what 'gates' were. They have been used in racing since the dawn of time.
Sure, because gates are such a new concept and so tricky to see... 😏
We're kind of with the commenters on this one SuperToaster! Gates in mountain biking are nothing new and how to use them is in the rulebook!

I'd like to personally thank the UCI for ruining the last round of the EWS this year and the incredible title fight we had going on. DQ'ing a title contender for missing a gate is ridiculous. Absolutely should have been a time penalty on the stage where the infraction occurred. Stoked for Jack but watching him cruise to the title is super disappointing.
Wasn't the only incident Richie was involved in last weekend. The rules are rules.

That DSQ seems overly harsh; something like a 20-30 penalty would be more suitable for a first offence; after that, then a DSQ is more fair. Putting my rallying hat on, drivers occasionally get penalised time for taking a bigger than normal 'cut'; but not a DSQ. (Meeke in Australia) Whenever you think the FiA are hopeless, the UCI find a way to beat them.

Well, that was an anticlimax if there ever was one. This report is very much lacking an interview with Rude. Apart from that, great coverage.

Kind of an unexciting end. Once Rude was out it kinda took the fun out and really took some of the glory from Jack. Would have been better to see a race till the end and truly see the best race.
Nope it really didn't take the glory away. Jack was able to follow the rules, Richie couldn't. Teams were notified of the problem, privateers really were not. The polish bloke, Lukasik was shafted big time as he was DQ, but not notified. Rude was notified in the morning.
Not the end we would have asked for to the men's overall, you're right. But for this race? Still a super exciting one to watch! So tight between Hattie and Bex and Martin, Jesse and Dailly were amazing to watch too

@@intoyoursoul23 a time penalty or stage disqualification would have led to a more exciting race. When the championship is decided by technicalities and not racing it made for a lack of excitement. The end of world cup downhill season is how championship seasons should end.

There was a clearly defined line, the big brown one that had green either side of it, that was also marked out with slalom gates and tape that from what I understand every rider except Rude and one other managed to follow. He missed 3 gates, it was blatant as! Break the rules, no matter how frivolous and cop the penalty.

Yo WHAT THE HELL??!? Why would they disqualify Rude from the entire race for missing two little flags??? Maybe give him a time penalty instead? Like that's totally insane to disqualify the guy over missing a couple flags at the end. Really a huge bummer for the entire series. Makes no sense!
Not surprising considering it’s the same international governing body that gives out penalties for socks.

@@androdelrosario It was a dark day when Chris Balls breakaway enduro series became another UCI governed event. We can argue for and against the move but the outcome remains the same. F the UCI.
@@michaels1954 well he wasn’t winning that stage even with the three flags he cut, so no we don’t all “know” he would have won.
It’s the same in World Cup DH - cut the course anywhere and you’re DQ’d. It’s the same rule for everyone and Richie was aware of it. Only two people out of everyone made that mistake - it sucks for the title battle but ultimately he only has himself to blame.

POV feeds as a spectator can be hard to comprehend, racers are in the moment, exhausted and smashin' on, must be hard. Just a thought. I hope that noob argueing w me a year or two ago that the strive is an "xc geometry" outdated bike has been watching this year's EWS.
Surely there could have been a time penalty for Rude. A dq seems targeted.
Another rider did the same and got DQ'd aswell! We don't think it was targeted, just a harsh ruling for a serious rule infraction where riders were cutting the course in order to gain a time advantage.

Rider of the race for me was local privateer Jess Stone , if it wasn't for breaking her finger I'm sure we would've seen her on the podium .

Lew is 100% a local as is Katy, although not currently in residence.
Bex is not a local, Staying in short term accommodation for a few months while prepping for local EWS round does not make you a local.
Does it really matter?
If you've moved to an area and you live there, you're local to that area, regardless of how long you've lived there or where you're from originally! That's the Whistler definition at least!
Bex has lived here for coming on 2 years. That's quite a "few" months I'd say.

3 seconds? For cutting 3 flags?! Why not just let riders make their own lines down the whole course then? 🙄
DQ is harsh, but it’s the same rules for everyone and it’s the same in World Cup DH as well.
Why 3 seconds? I was thinking penalise him the max time delay for the most timely crasher on the corner ... at best. Its just so "unknown" when someone cuts a course. Losing a stage only is the same as a whole race anyway. It comes back to being Richies own fault ... In the end I think sometimes he is just too laid back ... thats just who he is ... but theres times it costs him.
As Michael pointed out, it was a pretty clear violation of the rules. 3 seconds isn't harsh enough a penalty when you're talking about cutting the course to gain a time advantage.

What other option is there? Its impossible to be fair .... how many riders do you place him behind? Its just not fair all-round to place time limits unless its to place him in last ... which may have worked in terms of getting him to ride the rest of the stages ... but what for? you cant make up that much time. Its racing you have to race a standard course or you are in a different race.
Given that it seems like it was flagged in an ambiguous way, I think a big time penalty would have been sufficient. That was certainly an advantage to be had, but it couldn’t have been worth more than 5/10 seconds at the finish. It seems like a very deflating way to end a year long championship battle.
UCI didn't really decide the penalty at all, the EWS's rules are very clear and definitive, cut the course and a DQ is the only option available, commissaires had no choice with the way the EWS wrote their rules.

@@gmbn The women's overall had been decided for a long time. It was still fun to watch the rest of the race, but there was no tension there.
In classic UCI fashion, though, they decided to completely spoil the end of one of the best season-long battles we'd seen in all EWS history. The title was really up for grabs and there was no other contender. Even Moir reeled it back knowing the victory was secure. Absolute buzz kill
