    Your cabling patch block the WAP switch, your rack block the power panel behind. Everything need to be precise in networking. We want to avoid disruption during maintenance and debug in future.

  • @fs483

    Are those electrical panels behind the rack? I wouldn't put anything in front of them. Depending on where you are located, that can be a violation. I've done quite a few server room cleanups myself and have been in similar situations. One way of solving this kind of issue is have the patch panel and switch on a wall mount rack above the electrical panels and then getting a shorter rack to house the server equipment.

      T K yes, it’s a violation, and rightfully so. need much working distance! Gonna be a PITA to try and move it once the code inspector says no no

    Not bad clean up...I would suggest you could have first started with upgrading the switches...could have used ubiquiti switches or edgeswitches. Both are rack mount and far better than TP-link. I also didn't notice you installing any type of firewall...unless you are considering the TP-link VPN router as your FW. Again...move away from TP-link. I would recommend considering either building a pfsense box or purchasing one from Netscape. Firewall, routing, VPN and a whole host of services that are fully customizable and are enterprise grade. Good clean up considering what you started with.

    • @JJFlores197
      @JJFlores197 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is going to be a long comment, so hopefully it makes sense and isn't too wordy. A patch panel is very simple. It is a device that goes in between a network switch and the network cables coming from various parts of your home or business or wherever it is installed. A patch panel is hardware, but there's no logic in it. Let's say use a school environment for example. There is a wing of 5 classrooms. Each of those classrooms has 10 network drops. That means that there are a total of 50 network cables going into your network cabinet. It can be very daunting and difficult to manage all of those cables. Instead of plugging them into the switch directly, you terminate those 50 network cables into the back of the patch panel. You then run a patch cable (a short, ethernet cable) from a port on the panel to a port on the switch. The network drops (in the classroom) and the patch panel should all be labeled the same. In other words, all of the ports should be labeled something like "Room 1-1" "Room 1-2" "Room 2-1" "Room 2-2" and so forth. This should also correspond on the patch panel This allows you to easily patch/unpatch network drops and to identify.
      In addition to that, you use patch panels to keep your cable safe. The cables that run from the data drops to your network cabinet are stiff. They're not meant to be plugged and unplugged often. This can cause the cable to break internally which means you will have to replace the cable which can be difficult and/or expensive. With the patch panel you don't have to worry about the cable getting damaged as much since. Since the cable terminates at the panel, you don't directly work with that cable. You just plug in a patch cable into it and then into the switch. If the patch cable gets damaged, it is a simple and easy replacement.
      It might be difficult to visualize this just by a comment. I suggest looking up videos and pictures of a network cabinet and patch panels to get a good visual idea. There's a channel called FiberNinja where he works on network cabinets and you can get a good idea of what they look like.

    8/10. Great work and planning, the labeling is understandable as you'd have to disconnect all the drops that were not labeled and tone/id them at the patch panel. Some better cable management could be used for the structured cabling. A lot of times contractors/vendors won't have a full arsenal of various length patch cables, so the patch panel placement relative to the switches will also help minimize the building of a rats nest in the future.

    Yes, your job is done, but you made another problem. The electrical panel is blocked. As I can see the rack is not full so you could just buy smaller/shorter one, then it would be better. On several times you said that somebody will has to go and fix something in the next day, or after that. This is not a complete job. Sorry, but this is the true.

    If the wires where already terminated to RJ45 plugs why would you strip them and punch them into a patch panel? You just wasted like a half hour or more instead of just getting a plug through keystone type patch panel. But to each his own I guess.

    • @im_sarge_bro4542
      @im_sarge_bro4542 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm assuming you don't work with network cabling in commercial environments. Had he stuck with those RJ45 plugs, he may of ran into issues later on because someone before him didn't properly terminate them (pay attention when your ISP sends a tech out to your house to diagnose a cable issue, most of the time they will re-terminate the RF connector to eliminate the possibility of a bad termination).
      In the real world, you don't terminate RJ45 plugs to infrastructure cabling. You always terminate it to a patch panel or a RJ45 keystone jack using a punch down tool. You save so much time by doing this.
      Finally, by keeping those RJ45 plugs, he would've added a secondary point of failure that would've been unnecessary (plugging in a RJ45 plug into another RJ45 pass through jack). Terminating straight to a RJ45 keystone jack or a patch panel will reduce that point of failure.
      I hope I was able to explain why it's done like this in the real world, it's not about wasting time, there's much more than that to the blind eye.

    • @Notsosamurai1
      @Notsosamurai1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@im_sarge_bro4542 Ya I get that, but if they where already terminated to RJ45s and not having issues they are wasting time and money cutting them all and terminating them to a patch panel. They said they had a time crunch and where trying to save the customer money, that why I made that comment. I dont do networking for a living but one of my best friends does. I have never had an issue with a RJ45 unless the cable is moved alot or get exposed to humidity. If thats the way they do it thats fine but just seems like a waste of time.

    • @jeiusgacutan2771
      @jeiusgacutan2771 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Notsosamurai1 patch panel is a must..what patch panel do is making a final destination for the cables to avoid damage and stress to the cable, you can also move or replace the switch whenever you want for management and easy troubleshooting as well if in case the run cable rj45 become faulty you just need to replace the patch cable.

    Sorry but when I saw your disclaimer "for EDUCATIONAL purpose only" I couldn't resist... People, the only thing you can learn from it is how NOT to do it. You made a rookie mistake, and that's why in most places you needs permits to install wiring infrastructures. At least where I live, you can't put *anything* less than one meter in front of an electrical panel. Being on wheel or anything is no excuse, if the cabling is permanently attached, it's part of the building and when it's part of the building, make sure you know what you are doing because you can get sued anytime, be it by an insurance company or because of a complain from an angry competitor. There was no way that room could handle a full depth server rack and you didn't even used it as a server rack anyway, you used it as a wiring closet with some shelves. For sure you made a flashy video but it's in fact a really good example of what nobody should do. *PLEASE* at least learn from your mistakes and maybe next time hire a consultant just for the structured wiring part, if they know what they are doing they will tell you that there's no way they can do it in cases like that. When they leave you can then put rack whatever you want in the rack they installed and do the exact same job.
