Will Sharpe, creator of hit Channel 4 sitcom Flowers, discusses working with Olivia Colman, the genre of his show - “comedy with a mental illness” - and how putting in the hours will get you far. He also explores how you can constantly look for opportunities to improve your writing.
Will Sharpe started his career in theatre with the Royal Shakespeare company, before moving into filmmaking. A short film in 2009 swiftly progressed to a feature, both co-written with filmmaker Tom Kingsley, which earned the pair a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. He has since worked on creating his own series for Channel 4 in Flowers.

Yes the acting in this is incredible, but Will Sharpe has achieved perfection with the writing of Flowers. I've never cried so much with joy and sadness from a tv show or film! I can't wait to see what this guy works on in the future. Pure Genius.
I really hope there will be a season 3.
Agreed. The Season 2 finale was perfection. I hope he leaves it there. I can't imagine it getting any better than that.
Omg, definitely!!! Genius❣
I cannot fathom how they were able to capture all this beautiful chaos and expression. So pure
@@yooki198 Why donyou all say that ? What makes it genius?
The character of Shun was so endearing and heartbreaking in this brilliant series. When I discovered that "Shun" wrote and directed Flowers I was blown away. SO insightful and amazing Will Sharpe - wowwww. Everyone in this was brilliant. A dark, wacky, enlightening, despairing, hopeful ride, filled with love and confusion and naughty bits.
Flowers is a truly extraordinary creation, one of those rarities which combines brilliant writing with perfect casting, acting and production. I found each episode bizarre and a little exhausting to watch, but also addictive, bittersweet, and moving. Will Sharpe is such a fantastic actor too, seeing Shun stuck up a tree in series 2 was so believable and emotional. I very much hope we will seem more from his talent.
The last episode of season 2 was just heartbreaking when they were asking Shun about his family. Sharpe's acting was so perfect and heartfelt, I was in tears. Such a great show. Everyone is brilliant.
His character is one of the most endearing personalities I’ve ever seen in tv. Had me completely bawling at the end of season 2
aesthetics mom Me too!!
@@audiaudiaudi the credits for season 2 broke me. i was already sobbing but once the drawings popped up i broke down
Watched the series for the first time last night. SAME. Cried though the entire final episode.
@@Griwhoolda I'll be watching everything this man does from now on! He's incredibly talented
The evolution of Shun’s character in Flowers was for me the best part. At first Shun was always accommodating and trying to be the ray of sunshine for everyone around him that he knew needed it. Then over time this drained him. No one knew his story. He kept it bottled up bc he didn’t want to upset everyone. So being this constant happy person and ignoring his pain, and feeling unappreciated by the family who weren’t getting along despite the fact that they still had each other, Shun just said fuck it. He started letting it all out. He started telling people how he felt. He started drowning his pain in alcohol. He was hilarious but in the end so very sad. I love him.
He started off with such a minor role, you'd never expect his story arc to be such a huge thing later on.
Flowers is so amazing and well written
I’ve just finished watching both current seasons, got to it late. To run the risk of repeating everything already said on here, Flowers is one of the most beautifully created, wonderfully acted and superbly innovative British comedy dramas I’ve been lucky enough to see. The creative side of the show and the characters alone make it worth watching, but it’s also hilarious in so many places and there isn’t one character in there that isn’t loveable and beautifully melancholic in some way.
Episode five of season one literally had me in tears.
I didn’t know will sharpe up until now, but now I’m one of his biggest fans.
Also, how the hell he got Alan Moore AND Simon Munnery in it is unbelievable.
Highest praise I can articulate. Don’t know what else to say.
Alan Moore the comic book author? I don't see him listed in the cast on IMDB, which episode was he in?
@@cpdbutler yeah, what?
Throw all the BAFTAs at him, please.
Never had a show leave me with such an empty feeling after it was done. Sounds grim but i think thats the true sign of a great show, one where you almost mourn the characters when its finished because you know they aren't real and that was all you'll ever see of them, probably the best show i've ever seen and ever will see, just special.
Flowers was such a delight to find on Netflix. I can’t praise it enough, I’m telling everyone I know to watch this gorgeous show with beautiful, heart-breaking characters. Thank you Will
I've found it's a difficult show to get other people interested in, mostly because expectations are so completely different. I started my friends on it with the first two episodes last night, here's hoping they continue watching.
I just finished season 2 of flowers I cried my eyes out so many times. Honestly, I can't get over how well it handled mental health, it just hit me really hard...I can't praise the writing on this show enough.
Flowers is so brilliant please make series 3 including all the cast of series 1 and 2 ..we never notice the obvious person that needs help. They say talk to friends but they run a mile and its true some family's are so wrapped up in there selves they leave us to fight depression on our own..Thanks again for such a lovely thoughtful series.. x x x to all
Possibly my favourite comedy series ever. Ground-breaking. There were so many layers to Flowers, and so much compassion in the writing, I never tire of re-watching it.
I just watched series 1 & 2 of Flowers (a little late) and fell in love. I have never felt this way about any TV series in my life. It's so uncomfortable, joyful, devastating and peculiar - I don't think I'll ever be over it. Every character is so human and flawed but loveable all the same. After the last episode, I had to sit alone and reflect on it for a while before I felt ready to carry on with life. It's just so powerful. Having watched this, Will Sharpe seems like such a genuine guy too which makes me love it even more.
yes, i dont often rewatch shows, but this one i will be returning to for something thats hard to explain. so lucky i got to see it
What an incredibly talented guy. His performance on Giri/Haji was absolutely breathtaking. So deep, detailed, intricate and beautiful. He’s like the male Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Just this visionary Tour-de-Force, immensely skilled in multiple disciplines both on and off the screen.
I'm just at Series 1, episode 5 and only now found out that the guy who plays Shun is the creator/writer/director of this so-far brilliant show, and his brother Arthur does all the music, which is also excellent. I now want to seek out everything they have done, and will no doubt seek out their future projects. Bravo!
th-cam.com/video/AnuGSDMEGEI/w-d-xo.html you'll love this
I just finished season 2. I cried. Please make a season 3.
Every director (or would-be director), no matter the medium in which they work, should watch this video from the 10:00 mark on. Will Sharpe speaks with such insight, humbleness and love about the director's role and the challenges of their responsibility for the overall progress of a project. What a great talent and a great soul!
The mixture of a faint smile and unstoppable tears running down my cheeks after the last episode. It is unlike anything I have ever seen. Beautifully tragic it’s a masterpiece
Brilliant actor. Excellent in Giri/Haji.
Such a great interview! His answers are incredibly insightful. And the series is spot on, every detail is so well executed. Thank you!
How incredibly thoughtful, he is, with the unfolding narrative of the storyline and characters, and feel of the set and the people within it. I'm only on the 2nd episode and this one is different. It's special.
Just finished season 1. Loved every single character--even the ones I didn't like. Cried like a baby when the dad and daughter were in the hospital with the happiness machine on. You could see the heartbreak and the love. Kudos to Will Sharpe and all the actors!
What a brilliant show. The characters are so perfectly casted, and the stories are so beautiful and heartbreaking. Mental illness is so hard to understand, so painful to those that are going through it and painful for the love ones that feel helpless. Will Sharpe is a genius. It would be so wonderful to see a third season. I wanted more.
Omg I didn't know he's the creator of Flowers.. What an awesome man
I don't use the word 'genius' lightly. This guy wrote and directed one of the best TV shows of the last several decades, and then played one of the best characters in that show. He is a fucking *genius*.
Laughed my head off, cried my eyes out and was inspired in lots of ways. A thing of beauty.
I absolutely LOVED this series. just LOVED it. It is one of the best on Netflix today. Thank you.
What a dazzling and intense formulation of script writing, casting, set production, costumes, music, etc.. Everthing about Flowers is perfection. I am stunned by how this was conceptualized and produced by one person. A tour de force...kudos to everyone invloved in it's creation!
Brilliant show, thank you Will Sharpe
Love this show! Will is a talented actor, writer and director. I love his character Shun! The music is great in this show too.
His brother made a lot of the music
Genius, I love this show. It was really moving. What a script, cast, production design ❤️
It's a masterpiece.
This guy is a creative genius. Can't wait to see his career continue to progress. Flowers is a brilliant show, unlike anything else out there.
love those little nods after each answer. gorgeous❁
Truly brilliant series... on so many levels. Remarkable performances, beautiful deep portrayal of BP and depression.
Seems to be intelligent and concerned young man. Sure he will do great things.
Will Sharpe is gorgeous 💖
GENIUS! Is season 3 in the making??
im not someone that cries a lot at tv/film but there are so many episodes of this that just make me sob. its perfect. watched it twice in one month and i'll probably come back to it again at some point
Will Sharpe IS a genius.
I really connected with this show like nothing I’ve ever seen on TV before.
I cried & laughed a lot too. I hope it doesn’t end for a really, really long time.
Thank goodness for Will Sharpe
What a treasure! I’m so glad I discovered his work through Flowers.
Just finished season 2. Beautiful.
This series is so beautiful, sad, funny AND all this while being weird like it exists in an alternate reality or something. I'm so glad to got to watch it.
I adored Shun. Towards the end I only wanted to know what was going to happen to him. I sobbed like a madwoman when he went into the woods.
Genius ! The way you attack the issue of depression.
“Flowers” is a masterpiece. Will Sharpe is a genius.
I think this is the only video I have seen on youtube that has no dislikes. Says a lot about the love people feel for this series.
I've only just discovered this series and watched it within the last couple of weeks. The first series was much more structured and watching the first 3-4 episodes of the second, I was a little put-off I'll be completely honest, because it just seemed like they didn't know where to go and were being experimental for the sheer hell of it (I'm a fan of the experimental, don't get me wrong) but I'm glad I followed it through regardless and made it to the last episodes. It all came back together incredibly and the chaotic nature made a lot more sense, realising Amy had bipolar. Though the Shun arc made me incredibly sad and that last episode was truly incredible - moving, haunting, what else to say? - the moment that made me most tearful was the conversation between the vicar and Amy where she said she couldn't see her own prejudice against her own mental health issues and may never be able to...as someone who struggles with my own, that really hit me hard and perfectly captured so much, especially of recent times, like nothing else. I related as I'm sure many did, with many of the other moments and the numbing of the depression throughout and the ways we try to cope, but certain moments in the second series really said it like nothing else I've seen ever has. What a gift Will Sharpe has; I hope he's given lots more opportunities to create other projects which hopefully can touch us as deeply.
What an artist. They are hard to find nowadays.
Just finished watching this series. Absolutely brilliant. ❤️
Flowers is a fucking amazing series. i've watched the first season 20 times... the impact is always profound. well done. well fucking done. im in the US so im gonna have to wait to see Season 2.
Will Sharpe puts on a perfect British accent here. Such talent.
All jokes aside, how does anybody have the creative genius to create such a show?
This show is genius.
This was a completely new experience for me. I laughed through the first season, in between the drama. I laughed a lot less through the second, but found it incredibly gripping. Amy an Shun's story arcs were quite something.
I was so terrified and upset Season 1 Episode 4 when Shun was driving along the lane at night that he would crash the car and die I couldn’t watch further until I saw there was a season 2 and 3 so, whew, yay. Please don’t die Shun, seriously great character.
absolutely loveable so generous, fun and his heart is the biggest ... fantastic character ... keep living Shun
Mwow..this is one incredibly talented and creative guy.
I just finished watching these brilliant 2 seasons and hoping there will be more. So, so brilliant 💐 🌈 💕
Goodness gracious he is a gem
Genuinely such a genius
a brilliant show more people should know of.
"Ahh, Mr. White. You are know how I am feeling."
Thank you Will Sharpe.
Will sharpe in giri haji was amazing😭😭
Flowers really hit close to home for me. It's why I loved it so much...
I have to have a series 3 just to make sure shun is okay.
He's not ok
Quinn's Quest he went to his secret place with the gun
I think it's safe to assume he went through with it.
It certainly implies an unhappy end, but I don't know.
When Maurice visits him and asks if he'd gotten rid of the gun, Shun says he threw it in the bin. We obviously later see that was a lie and that he’d kept it.
Maybe when Maurice reached out to Shun at that point, telling him that he will always be a part of the Flowers family, those words had a positive effect on Shun. Maybe he then took the gun to his place in the forest to actually dispose of it - perhaps, in a symbolic way, burying it with the spirits of his family to safeguard, as a sign that he intends to uphold their wish that he not be ungrateful for his life, as we saw in the last episode of season one. When he was visited by his family, Shun expressed feeling as though nobody likes him, but that later exchange with Maurice then conveys to him that he is loved and a part of their family.
I don’t know, that’s just what I like to tell myself.
I took it that he took his life, and that's why we got a flashback of his first day, his life flashing before him as he passed.
However, I recently watched it again with my sisters and one of their takes was that the flashback was a memory, he probably took the gun with the intention of using it and then he remembered the words he spoke on his first day there and that would have given him the strength to "hold" and change his mind... which I think also makes sense & is a lovely way of viewing it.
I also believe it was left deliberately unanswered so that we could make our own minds up.
Such talent is daunting
GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENIIIIIIIUSSSSSS to the Nth degree
I wish more series would be possible.
I love “Flowers,” and I’m American!
Is it illegal for an American to like this show?
Just celebrating the diversity! 👍
I noticed the American character is vile. The publisher.
Umm he's really cute.
Flowers is fucking outstanding! My god! Also Will Sharpe is a beautiful man ❤️
Interesting, funny and full of surprises!
Didn’t know he was British!
Will Sharpe is fucking brilliant
Tell me you didn't do it. :'(
where can i watch this? i dont live in the uk
what a great new zealander!
Shun's character started off as an optimistic, stereo typical upbeat individual who then turned dark and un wanting.
♥️
He could play Cowboy Bebop's Spike.
He would be a very good fit for a Bruce Lee biopic! Shekhar Kapur should choose him for the role.
"Chiken made of beef?"
Corn dog
What is his instagram
🤗😍🙄
"A comedy with a mental illness"... sounds like my last job.
🤣
This guy talks like Aubrey DeGrey
He does a horrendous Japanese accent. It's quite ironic.
You are kidding - that is an incredibly authentic version of English spoken by someone Japanese. He absolutely nails it which is hardly surprising but I think it is the best version of the accent I have ever seen/heard on film.
