The kills in Eden Lake were so real & so brutal that I found it more appalling than anything I'd seen in a film before. I found it both hard to watch & equally hard to look away from. Those kids & their parents were disgusting.
Most disturbing movie I've ever seen, bar none. And I'm a lifelong horror junkie; I have a pretty high tolerance for this stuff. But Eden Lake was just bleak and brutal beyond measure.
That mid summer jump, had my literal favorite 4th wall break EVER!! just the slight looking back from one of the cult members and like smirks at the camera, just before the first one jumps, like giving a "I hope your ready for the violence" because before that it was just this long gf/bf struggle movie, and then that nod, and it all just started from there!
The glass in foot scene in revenge was very impressive! They even show adipose tissue (fat) in the foot, which most non medical viewers wouldn’t even know about, and certainly can’t appreciate. Working in the med field can kind of ruin gore when you know what actual wounds and injuries would really look like compared to the effects on screen.
Agreed. If you don’t work in healthcare you don’t think about that. I work in an ER, and when we get trauma patients, cleaning wounds gets confusing for the patient because they don’t know what the adipose layer is.
What about the scene in OLD where the woman with calcium deficiency ages so rapidly that her bones break while she is struggling to move then re-heal at odd angles only to reveal again and again
Months later I feel like Brooke's death is the worst in T2, the hacksaw one in 2016 more brutal, and the kids getting decapitated in All Hallows Eve the scariest as a parent of 2 small children
You can probably make a Part 2 with so many Honorable Mentions, but one I can think of is from The Ruins: It's actually not the foot amputation scene that made me sick. Two words: Thigh Fillet. One of the girls thinks she sees one of the vines under her skin, and one of the guys wakes up to see her with a knife just slicing her leg open saying she "almost got it". Brr!
Yes being infested by the vines drove the poor girl insane as she unintentionally killed her boyfriend who wss trying to stop her frenzied self surgery/ mutilation trying to get the vines real or imagined out of her. Her death was a mercy.
I'll be real: I loved both _Midsommar_ and _Hereditary,_ but they don't belong on this list. They were deeply uncomfortable movies, that had a couple of scenes that were so emotionally intense that people won't be likely to want to sit through them again, but that isn't the same as something that was hard to watch. I know we are all supposed to praise everything Ari Aster does, but that doesn't mean we have to shoehorn him into every list. And as people mentioned below, there are several entries that belong here that aren't on this list. For instance the scene in _Bone Tomahawk_ where the cave folk do their best Art the Clown impersonation. Or for that matter, _any_ movie involving the _actual_ Art the Clown. Personally, I'd put a vote in for the long take in the second half of _Climax_ when the dancers begin to realize they've been dosed with LSD, and all hell breaks loose. That was an incredibly difficult 45 minutes to sit through; and ironically it's probably the easiest-to-watch thing that director Gaspar Noe has ever put on film.... don't think that makes it a pleasant experience because it is definitely not.
Again, Charlie in Hereditary DIDN'T EAT NUTS, she knew of her allergy and wasn't stupid. She ate cake that was cut with a knife that was used to chop nuts
And being unlike any actual human beings in existence, neither she nor her brother have apparently ever heard of the concept. Why are all of Ari Astor's characters these weird blank-slates who just do whatever the plot requires? Had this family not already been established up to that point as extremely careless and neglectful regarding Charlie's potential fatal allergy, including Charlie herself, I might have been at all surprised that any of that happened.
While saying “sentenced to death,” is technically correct, in Apostle the character is sentenced to “Purification,” and a written prayer is placed in the new cavity in his skull.
A scene that always stuck with me was in the Jennifer Lopez Movie "The Cell". Vince Vaughn's character in the film was tortured and his intestines were slowly wrapped around a barbed crank. The horse scene was also notable in that film. Wonderful list as always!!! Keep up the amazing work and have a great day!!!

None of these are exactly bad things. The movie is really trippy! A good watch for horror fans. I believe it still holds up really well for a movie that old.
I like horror, and I certainly don't enjoy "entrails sprawling across the screen." That's a specific type of horror that some people enjoy, but I don't get the allure of at all. This is a nice video because it let me know about a bunch of movies not to watch. Or at the very least, it lets me know which scenes to skip.
Revenge has some of the most GORGEOUS cinematography I’ve ever seen in any film. It’s so saturated, yet still not distracting and still soooo horrifying
The drill is nasty, but the outer ring saw (for making a larger circular hole) spoils the effect as it is out of place to anyone who works with those tools.
One of my favorite thematic elements of Revenge is that rather than portraying the heroine being raped onscreen (as so many movies do, especially in this subgenre), filmmaker Coralie Fargeat has the heroine penetrate her rapists. Graphically. Repeatedly. Often in close-up. Yes, it's excruciating. That is literally the point.
Now I'm just saying but I would love to see a movie based on the Russians sleep experiment. Done right. I believe it would be eerie and bloody if done right
I sliced open my foot as a kid when I jumped into the water from the bridge. the water around turned all red and the wound were 2.5 inches. I get nasty tingles/pain in the scar by anything that makes me think of it so I skipped the 2nd point awfully quick!
Small correction: Olga doesn’t die until the end of the movie. She’s purposely left alive and in agony until Mother Suspiria releases her from her torment when she wishes to finally be allowed to die.
I know my suggestions for a list don’t usually reach the Whatculture team but I think you could do several lists of characters having to survive extreme weather as well as the villain/monsters in horror movies. Or I would say extreme heat where dehydration and heatstroke are also major concerns for the protagonists.

That scene in Bone Tomahawk was the only recent movie that made me put my hand up to the screen so hide what was going on. Technically, i still haven't seen that scene.
Fresh is ridiculous there is no way a woman can have her buttocks removed and still stand and walk that is anatomically impossible. This makes the whole scene in the movie a let down.
Annie sawing off her own head is harder to watch than Charlie's head. You kinda get a feeling something like her getting decapitated is possible, you never imagine for a second that Annie would decapitate herself
I actually really enjoyed spiral and I’m not a fan of the saw films. I actually want a sequel to that. I watched it because of Chris Rock and Samuel Jackson
It's all about how it's done (for me at least)! I can watch Terrifiers, Evil deads, The sadness, House that jack built etc. without blinking an eye, but the glass scene in Revenge makes me wince hard. 😖
Regardless of it being a silly film, in real life, if you get glass or something similar badly embedded in your body (no matter where, but especially where there are a lot of blood vessels), DO NOT REMOVE IT! Call an ambulance, or render first aid before being driven - by someone else! - to the ER. Best thing to do is make a "ring" of bandage to surround the item, then cover the whole thing up with another clean bandage and get to the ER ASAP!
As somebody with a genetic condition that makes my joints dislocate ridiculously easy, I assure you that having a dislocated jaw doesn't stop you from screaming.
I'm not sensitive to gore - only thing that truly disgusts me, gore wise, is the ripping of nails. Otherwise, the stuff I have to turn around from are maggots. I can't look at that at all. But that is more frequently used on bodies in criminal/police themed movies or shows rather than horror (though it happens too). If I'm to be bothered by gore, usually it's a matter of empathy for a character I love because I don't want to see them suffer rathe than for the gore itself.
I know I keep mentioning Excess Flesh in the comments for these videos, but... brrrrr... That's one of the more excruciating films I've seen, in part because the filmmakers render food itself completely revolting.

Eden Lake is one of the few movies I can never watch again. As you say, it was brutally realistic and the ending broke me.
Honestly, Annie’s monologue to Peter was one of the hardest things to watch in Hereditary
